Just curious as we have a 5yo and been talking about kid #2 as a possibility I have all of 7 weeks of experience having two kids, my older one is exactly (to the day!) three and a half years older. I'm going to guess there's no best or worst age gap, it's going to be weird and chaotic no matter what. I'd say right now the covid resurgence is what's making it worse, I had to keep him home from daycare for a week, and while he tested negative my wife and I basically solo parented a kid each while locked in the same house. It was weird, frustrating and I hope to never do that again. Both kids are doing great, and my son loves his baby sister. Despite all his energy he's been very gentle with her. We worked on soft and gentle touches with the cats.

How do you guys blow off stress? I don't think I ever really learned how to. I always just pushed that anxiety into my work, or smoked like a chimney, but both are non-options right now and I don't know what to do to make there be less stress

Anything I can do that requires my full attention. Yard work, car work, basically any type of hobby. I think things that stress me out will always stress me out until they're done, my best hope is to put it aside for a while.

Motorcycles, collecting vinyl... Lately I've just been buying keyboards. Don't do that. I'm now anxious again after spending FAR too much on keyboard poo poo and now personal property taxes are due and I'm like, "oops. gently caress." I used to just lean into it. Drink myself sick on coffee, starve myself, not sleep for days on end. Like REALLY get those cortisone levels up. Then spend the entirety of day 4 of no sleep in some hypnotic introspection, focusing solely on only the terrible things you've done in your life, doing your best to come to terms with them in some sick form of mental flagellation. Then read some Nietzsche, or something really hosed up like The Patriot Act, realize nothing really matters and humanity is a virus, eat some ice cream and take a nap followed by a glass of Scotch and a hand full of gummybears for breakfast (yes, it counts as breakfast no matter when you wake up.) I can't really do that anymore because I have a family and I'm pretty sure that poo poo would land me in some form of inpatient mental facility. Camping is a pretty great stress reliever for me, but I like camping. I like getting away from everything and enjoying nature. Cooking over a campfire. Building a shelter. If you can't go camping, maybe build a fire pit and roast some marshmallows?

I’ve got the issue that if I stop, my brain falls back into the maelstrom of emotions and depression that I’m struggling with after the last few months. I’m heading off camping totally off the grid for the next week or so, but even that’s bitter sweet because my missus can’t come with me because she’s a school teacher and still in term time and I’d been waiting for better weather to take my ex camping, which we’d both been looking forward too and that’s not gonna happen now.

Also paddle boarding, it's nice to go out into a big body of water and just sit and float around wherever the wind or waves take you for a bit, very relaxing. And the paddling part is good exercise.

So I put in my 2 weeks notice, in writing, to HR right before I went out of town. By now it should have filtered down to managers. I also left a copy of the notice on my manager's desk, but it's a shared office (and they keep a reasonably strong fan in there since it gets HOT - papers get blown around a bit). Nobody has said anything about it. Last time I tried to quit, one of the store managers basically begged me to stay. I saw him last night, we said hi to each other, BS'd for a moment, and nothing was said about it. Saw my direct boss this morning, and he didn't bring it up (and I was in a rush to GTFO). I left before seeing him again.. I have a bad feeling the one left in the manager office got lost, and HR probably didn't communicate it to anyone else. I did find out my manager is leaving for a new store in a couple of weeks, so it's very possible he's in his "don't give a poo poo about this store anymore" phase. I'll have to try and catch him tomorrow morning. I don't want to gently caress them over, so if I need to, I'll work another week - but I don't WANT to. Nights are taking a hell of a toll on me. meatpimp posted:Lots of good feedback there, thanks. I don't think I've ever mentioned it in anything but passing, but autism is a bitch. That's been a challenge both in his life and his relationship with me. I have an autistic cousin that's heading to college soon, and yeah.... that's basically what my aunt has said about both of her kids. Also, her daughter came out as LGBTQ (I haven't been told which letter yet, I'm assuming L or B), has seen a lot of the negative stereotypes and such, which has left her in a bit of a slump... and my aunt wants me to come hang out with the two of them (mostly her daughter) to show LGBTQ isn't bad (keep in mind I've never met her kids, but they know who I am, and that I'm somewhere between bi and gay). Her son is autistic as well; he didn't start talking until he was 5 (started to around 2, then stopped), and he's definitely much further into the spectrum, but caught up with others his age pretty quickly. I'm a bit hesitant, more because my aunt is an anti-vaxxer. Aunt did make an exception for herself and got a COVID jab, but didn't get it for her kids ("I don't want them to be sterile!" ). Delta is a bitch, I personally know 3 people who were fully vaxxed and still got COVID, just in the past month. It's decimating curbside and frontend at my store (both depts are largely 18-25 year olds, so there's a lot of hanging out outside of work happening). I'm fully vaccinated (and plan to get the 5G modem firmware update when it's available to me), but I really don't want to be around anyone that's not vaccinated, at least not indoors. COVID has absolutely decimated our hospitals here, again - we're floating between 1-3 available ICU beds in the 11 county trauma service area. The Door Frame posted:How do you guys blow off stress? I always just pushed that anxiety into my work, or smoked like a chimney, but both are non-options right now and I don't know what to do to make there be less stress If I'm REALLY stressed..... I usually buy a pack of cigarettes and go for a looooooooong walk or drive. Then deal with cottonmouth for a few days... and hacking up a lung or two, since I haven't smoked regularly since 2005. Otherwise I try to clean up the garage (that's the neverending project right there), or just start driving until I hit the end of a road, then turn onto whatever random road, then keep doing that pattern until I've calmed down sufficiently. The fun part is trying to find my way back home (I did this a lot more before smartphones, and usually found myself on county dirt roads that were just numbered something like "2183 S"). There was a lot of stopping at whatever shop I might run across (or even flagging down someone on the road) and asking how to get to a major road back then. I keep offline maps for the region saved in Google Maps these days. big dong wanter posted:got absolutely hosed by cenno and they have shut down the food bank near me due to covid. this is bullshit, gonna have to go back to dumpster-diving until the government can unfuck the entire situation and its not like i can do my usual strat of doing random cash in hand chores for people with roni I can't do much, but if you have paypal, venmo, cashapp, etc I can probably kick a few bucks your way. thanks for the offers of assistance, thankfully things have improved in the last hour or so. managed to hook up with a few local orgs and they have helped me out with some food parcels. if you have a few dollarydoos burning a hole in your pocket, i would suggest throwing CUDL (australia based) or Food Not Bombs a couple of bucks. rents paid until end of next month and i was chatting about it to a neighbour while having a dart and hes chucked some tinned soup my way. TLDR: help your local street kitchen instead of chucking me some cash, im not going to starve but some people might.

Second kid is neurotypical, so there's a lot less drama and stress about the future. They have a pretty normal sibling relationship, but the second one doesn't get a lot of direct feedback from the first... but she recognizes where her brother is coming from and accepts that that's "just him." My bigger concern was MY age, we had the second one when I was 38, so I'll be 56 when she gets out of high school... when she was born, that sounded super old. Now that I'm 50, it doesn't seem too bad. Life is weird. On that note, I watched Stillwater yesterday and there's a quote at the end that really sums poo poo up. In conclusion to virtually the whole movie, Matt Damon says "Life is brutal." Man... it is. The Door Frame posted:How do you guys blow off stress? I don't think I ever really learned how to. I always just pushed that anxiety into my work, or smoked like a chimney, but both are non-options right now and I don't know what to do to make there be less stress I know my answer -- biking and working out. But I haven't done either in far too long. I'm at the end of a really long story arc that started with our kitchen flood in 2019 and went through construction disasters and nonsense, followed by covid. I'm so far away from my stress-free "happy place," I only have a vague recollection of what that looks like. Not saying that in a depressive way, it's part of life and sometimes you have to ride further than you thought you would to get through. Over the past three years, I've told my wife "I can't take any more" too many times. And after the overwhelmed feeling goes away, I find another gear. And that's what it takes. You get overwhelmed because life is operating outside the parameters you defined, then you adjust to the new challenge and work through it. meatpimp fucked around with this message at 14:39 on Aug 22, 2021 |
