If you want the college radio experience except even more eclectic check out WFMU. You need to be in parts of New Jersey or New York to get it terrestial, but it streams online at that link.

It's literally a college radio station that outlived its college and exists as a listener-funded free-form station that has blocks of everything from polka to gospel to songs in any genre as long as they're about animals to music created by and for cults.

Not college radio (well, it’s owned by the university, but it’s def not college students), but WXPN in Philly is really good. They def lean towards whatever new indie rock is out, but they def play mostly whatever they want to play , have theme days, overall they do really well. Can’t recommend them enough.

WNRN in Charlottesville, VA is worth a listen. They're not as eclectic as some of the other recommendations but they're completely listener supported and never play commercials.

Like...I fully expect the town to get a LOT of lawsuits in the future from former students getting cancer or something. But there's really nowhere else to put a new school. There's been a few site proposed but they are all garbage locations in terms of what traffic/accessibility and site prep would be.

my only Macy's experience goes like this:

I had to buy a particular shirt, pants, and belt for a wedding, available only at Macy's or through some other online retailer.

menswear at this Macy's had about a half-dozen people working there, talking to each other, straightening stuff out. all late-middle-aged and kinda grim in general, and all actively hostile to the idea of helping me. I figured out my size but couldn't get checked out, so I gave up and ordered it from the online retailer.

could've been a bad day. could've been bad management. could be that it was an upscale mall and I'm clearly not a guy who's going to drop more than a hundred twenty bucks on threads at Macy's. could be that retail sucks, or that late capitalism is, like other people, hell.

Sup fellow Central Virginian. I've lived in the area for over a decade and listen to NRN occasionally. They're a bit too mellow-country-hipster for my tastes but I have heard some great things on that station over the years (Les Temps Perdue is a cool show).

I also won a guess-that-song contest 10 years ago (the song was Stone Roses' I Wanna Be Adored) and got $9 off a record of my choice at Plan 9 music (when it was still in Albemarle Square), and the album I bought was not only mind-blowing, but less than $9 total so the store paid me for it.

C'ville's rock station (WXRK 92.3) is also non-profit like NRN, I believe. Although they play mostly mainstream stuff (if you could even call rock/alternative mainstream anymore). I can't pick up that station where I'm living now but that's usually what I listen to when I have to run errands to Cville.

Had no idea there were so many C-villians here!

There's also WTJU, the big one from UVA; and WREN 95.1, a fairly new oldies station in the area. Both are unique stations because they both play stuff that you'd likely never hear on a mainstream corporate station; especially TJU, which plays a little bit of everything.

I guess mostly because of the "suspended" language...it seems a lot like they're trying to reassure folks into coming back to their platform, only to later down the line go "Whoops, no more porn again. We never said we would NEVER crack down on the porn, just that we had suspended that policy temporarily!" I dunno, I'm not in that circle. The whole thing seems like a shitshow.

I have a distant cousin who just had a destination wedding to Wyoming (She lives in Alabama! There are no family ties to Wyoming on either side of the marriage! We're in a pandemic! Most of AL is unvaccinated! A wedding in Bankhead National Forest would be beautiful AND local!). Apparently they did their vows in private, and I guess some guests were grumbling that they traveled all this way and didn't even get the "full wedding experience". Sucks to suck!

Pornhub was about Christian Dominionist groups pretending to be worried about those things and using it to try to strongarm payment processors into not working with pornhub as part of a campaign against sex work and pornography in general. OF turns out to have involved the same thing, plus the founder wanting to cash out.

I'm seeing conflicting info on whether this is the case. However, this WAS a real interesting read!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exodus_Cry

I'm sure this isn't helping: Looks like an investigation was done, and it seems OF will bend its moderation rules if the uploader in question is popular (aka making them more money).

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-58255865

quote:

We obtained several differently-dated versions of the same 2021 document. All, except the oldest, state there should be at least five examples of "illegal" content on an account for it to be "escalated" immediately to management. Later versions from this summer include an apparently contradictory statement requiring immediate management referral for some examples of illegal content.

The document also gives moderators specific instructions for dealing with accounts - depending on how popular each one is. It says accounts with higher numbers of subscribers can be given additional warnings when rules are broken.

However, staff are told to moderate accounts with low user numbers "as we would and [restrict] when necessary". With middle range accounts, they are told to warn, "but only restrict after the 3rd warning". If one of the site's most successful - and lucrative - creators breaks the rules, the account is dealt with by a different team.

"There is a discrimination between accounts," says Christof. "It shows money is the priority." The second moderator says that with violations of any kind, "You get a few warnings, you don't just get the one warning and then you're off."

Edit: Whoops, this was mentioned upthread! Couldn't remember which thread it was posted in.

A bombshell BBC investigation on OnlyFans just dropped, and it seems like the company made it recent announcement in response to the looming release of this investigation.

The short summary is that they told moderators to go easy on high-profit accounts and punished them for policing any more aggressively. They were also clearly not dedicating enough resources to policing things like underage sex, exploitation, trafficking and pay-for-sex.

I'm pretty sure nothing changed in terms of what banks and credit card companies were saying to OnlyFans. It's only been a few days and banks don't change their policies just like that. My guess is OnlyFans got taken aback by the backlash, measured the potential revenue loss and decided to tighten up on moderation rather than abandon the business model altogether.

Apparently, much like the gay marriage they also oppose, these groups really don't like their backing being actually exposed, and got spooked when everyone immediately saw through them and the narrative became about a bunch of puritan fundies and their Epstein-connected billionaire backer rather than the smokescreen of trafficking.

It was a daft thing for OnlyFans to put the leeway for popular accounts into writing in its moderation manual, but it’s not clear what it meant in practice.

The implication is that they were letting celebrities get away with sex trafficking, and if so they should rightfully be crucified, but for all we know “bend the rules for illegal activity” could be “m’am, I’m sorry, but if we see that bong in any more videos, we’re going to have to take action”.

Yeah, that's a thing that's bugging me about that BBC report.

They did find some issues that were worth reporting, like that Onlyfans was way overstating their ability for large scale moderation, especially since they don't seem ready to monitor foreign languages that they still allow on site. And the compliance manual thing is crazy. But the actual article notes the weirdness that "illegal" content could get up to 5 warnings but that "illegal" content was also supposed to be reported immediately and handled harshly. It seems like they were mixing "Against TOS/A Little Too Close to Obscene/Might Upset the Processor" with "Actually Illegal" in the manual. Which is bad, but also it sucks for the BBC to lump it all together and not, you know, figure out if that was the case.

On the whole the big headline and top paragraphs present everything together as if it was one clear thing. But if you read the whole article, a lot of the reported incidents that run up the numbers were just models who were too forward about real-life escort work or drug, weapon and alcohol stuff. Telling models that they aren't allowed to smoke weed, or hold a "weapon" or say that they're drunk is pretty different than what most people think of as illegal. I also assumed it included content warnings. They were apparently theoretically strict about some fetish stuff.

I'm also not sure what to think about the moderator and agent that they spoke to believing that every "gently caress a Fan" video was 100% real. That...raised a few questions about the whistleblower. I know a few are probably doing it legit, but that just kind of stuck out.

I don't know. Sucks for all the sex workers who had a few really bad days from the mess, and a lot of the damage is still done but at least it shoves the cliff back a bit for the workers.
