FF14 does have fall damage.

Edit: I second the combat in Psychonauts. I really like the game and don't actually mind the combat but it seems superfluous - enemies die really quickly when you use the right power on them so there's very little actual challenge to it, it's just there because...I guess the first game had it? Even the powers you use are used elsewhere on the game so it's not like any of them would need to be removed if combat was gone.

Skaven are some unfun bullshit to deal with in Total Warhammer 2. Their default move stance just gives them the ability to attack someone and ambush them. And they get access to the underway so they are not slowed down by terrain and can bypass impassible terrain.

Then you fight them and they summon units from under you. Oh they got low leadership? Well my units don't really keep their leadership that well when the skaven can just call down the heavens and delete half the unit.

'Drop to 1 HP' is a method used for I think every MMO I've ever played, and it works really well. It means fall damage is basically just a slap on the wrist if you're just casually jumping off buildings in a non-combat zone (which is a disconcertingly common pastime in those games now I think about it), but means that it has weight if you tried to jump off a cliff to avoid enemies or something.

Nah, I've definitely fallen and landed on my face a few times in Psychonauts 2, it just does a tiny amount of damage compared to enemies or stage hazards. It basically only happened to me when I ran out of levitation juice, so I couldn't tell if Raz goes into a helpless state like in Banjo-Kazooie after he starts screaming or if you can save it at that point by using levitation. Also can't say whether or not that menu option goes for both or only falling from a distance.

I played the Silver Case recently and the game part is obnoxiously slow, static screens that gain nothing by even being interactive with like 5 puzzles the whole game and 16 hours of text but I loved it.

Also I have learned to not bother scouting far beyond my borders for trade partners or anything like that. Because what happens instead is that some jackass on the other side of the world will decide they want a piece of me and can come in from any direction with all the beach landings all over the place.

Last game these undead assholes from all the way on their island in the corner of the world decided they were gonna go through 3 other faction's lands to get at me.

It's a pity that the only way to have fun in strategy games is to have everyone unite against the player so you get to experience the extremely well balanced combat. It's not like there could be any enjoyment to be had playing ai factions off against each other.

Now if you excuse me I have to go make Civilization VII.

You can turn off fall damage in Psychonauts 2 from the options menu at no penalty. Why that isn't the default I don't really know.

Whats dragging me down is they still forgot to include a post-game item that points out where the figaments you're missing are because holy hell some of these levels are absolutely sprawling and missing 1 of 206 is just brutal.

Oh no!😱

I can put up with fall damage in games, as long as its consistant. What I loathe are the games where this fall will do nothing, or at most about a third of your health bar, but that fall will just kill you outright from full health, despite them not appearing to be that different. Particularly if the actual path forward is to jump down a drop that looks pretty much exactly the same as the drops which kill you everywhere else in the game.

BAWWW-UNH!
Fall damage can work well with decent level design, where height differences form a natural barrier that can passed with certain powers or paying the toll (taking damage).

In open world games where the player can already go pretty much everywhere, it can be really annoying, especially if you are super powered or the tone is otherwise cartoonish.

I've been playing a fair bit of Red Dead Online recently, which is a bit of a surprise considering how hard I bounced off of the singleplayer, but I guess everything is more fun when played with friends. More recently I unlocked a new type of activity that involves stealth missions, and I'm staggered by just how lazy the implementation of stealth gameplay is. There's not way to distract or lure enemies, there's no indication whether you're within sight of any of them, they can spot you right through dense foliage and occasionally even solid objects. Once even one does see you, every other enemy in the area is telepathically alerted and knows exactly where you are.

It's the sort of half-assed approach I'd expect from some mid-budget or indie game, but this an AAA game, with stupid amounts of polish in other (rather superfluous) areas. Not just that, but it's a game about criminals getting up to crime poo poo, which traditionally does involve a fair bit of stealth and subterfuge, like the aforementioned stealth missions. At least it's nice enough to generally just let you shoot your way out if stealth fails, but even then it'll cut the rewards of the mission.

Fake edit: Also the loving game keeps switching my weapons around for no reason :argh:

In the world, fall damage does not apply if you're mounted. I've definitely used that as a shortcut. Summon horse, mount up, jump off cliff. All is fine.

The only problem is that your horse (or stag, or weird horse-shaped reptile) does briefly fall over like they're hurt before getting up, and I feel bad.

The moment in Odyssey where Kassandra hits that breakpoint where fall damage no longer applies to her is glorious.

I'm an unstoppable force of nature, why the hell should I care about your mortal things like fall damage? I've got cultists to stab and Spartans to kick off of buildings, I don't have time to be taking fall damage.

To be fair with the Banjo-Kazooie port it seems like they put some effort into improving it.

I replayed Ocarina Of Time a while back and it was ok except for the lovely controller making aiming arrows aggravatingly difficult. Conker I remember being rough even at the time, that and Perfect Dark ran notably badly on a console where peak performance was like "tolerable". It's weird they didn't delay them and remake them as Gamecube games, since by the time they came up the N64's time was all but up anyway

Perfect Dark came out in May 2000. The Nintendo Gamecube did not release until May 2002, nearly two years later. Not exactly a length of time you can just sit around on. Really late Rare projects like Dinosaur Planet did end up getting a Gamecube version.
