family got quoted 110 bucks to clean out the gutters, i told them i'd do it for that because im turbobroke and running low on food.

took two full days and i nearly died, probably should have asked for more money but hey, at least this beer tastes loving AMAZING.

VACCINE CHAT: congrats on everyone for getting 5g, i still havent gotten around to it because it would require me to either register my car (money i doesnt have) or take public tranport during a turbopandemic. hopefully my local gp starts doing vaccines soon so i can finally do my part. christ i wish the advice wasnt so confusing tho

You are in Australia aren't you? Condolences for how badly your country rollout has been hosed up if your local GP isn't doing shots yet.

If there are vaccines on offer that you have to travel to and you are allowed to do so; assuming that you don't have asthma or any other health issues I would mask up, use lots of hand sanitiser and get on that bus to go get stabbed. Can you not get aforementioned family to drive you there in return for that $110 they just saved?

im not allowed to be in the same car as them (or go to their house to clean the gutter for cash but they are a half dozen blocks away) got off the phone from cenno and it should be reinstated next week so hopefully i can sort the car and get me the jab. might end up scabbing a lift despite the risk because vaccines always hit me like a ton of bricks and driving a ~400hp sedan with bald tyres when you are feeling a bit poo poo seems like a bad idea.

Didn't go down without a fight though. He couldn't just go get the vaccine. He had to go to the loving hospital and pretend he was dying after he got it. He was admitted for a full day before he got it because he threw such a tantrum about it that nobody wanted to be the one to give it to him.
Then his wife called her mother and blamed her for "killing my husband because she voted for Biden."

What a couple of loving shitheads.

A friend of mine has "awful arm pain" from the vaccine. Every time I see him, he constantly rubs his lower arm where he claims it hurts. I suggested maybe he should lay off rubbing it really hard multiple times a day and maybe the pain would go away, but he said it's the only thing that quote "helps". Sure pal. You digging your thumb into your forearm for 10 minutes at a whack really helps. Note: he was basically forced to get the vaccine, I'm sure he would have opted out if it wasn't a job requirement. Now he bitches about forced vaccination as fascism... He's ex-military, which means he was forcibly vaccinated on day 1 of basic.

It closed up long before that happened, unfortunately, and there's nothing remotely left of it. Got completely destroyed circa 2003-04 for a Fedex hub.

It was also just down the road from an R/C track that closed up around the same time, maybe a bit earlier even.

That's a hell of a read. Good reminder to make sure your will, power of attorney and everything else is taken care of. Also a good time to make sure your family is aware if you want to go the DNR route.

Get to work on updating the resume, basically rewriting from scratch, this week for slots opening up on new systems coming in. Old days with smaller company we'd pretty much just move to the new spot then work out the details, doesn't work that way with the larger company that acquired us. Have to do the full resume, apply, interviews and it mostly comes down to whether the customer thinks we fit the position in the end. I've worked with this customer since 2009 when I moved to TN but that doesn't make me any less stressed.

Been thinking a lot lately about selling off most of the cars that aren't getting driven often to fund one really fun car and a bunch of home projects. Sure I'd miss looking at them but due to health issues I've driven the E28 about 500 miles and the E30 zero miles since fall 2019.

It's definitely an attractive thought just on the reduction of insurance, maintenance, etc. Plus then I might actually have time to drive the ones I keep more often. We sold two earlier this spring and replaced it with one, another one is leaving Wednesday and won't be replaced. Our problem is also the garage was not built for what we have stuffed in there. To get the E30 or E28 we move the highlander, move the fiat, move stuff out of the way, open the wall, move the locost then pull drive out. It works and it's great for storing cars but kind of garbage for driving cars. Need to get the formula car out on track and see if that is even going to be medically possible. I also have the AI problem of when I have space/funds I want to add a project.

Lights started flickering.

UPS went into "so hey I see anywhere from 90 to 260 volts when I should see 120, gently caress you I'm going to battery" mood.

Got the important poo poo unplugged quickly (TVs, microwave, coffee maker - UPS on my desktop had already shut it down). The modem and router have autoswitching 100-240V power supplies, they can deal with it. Two LED nightlights went up in smoke, one just stopped working entirely. Another was flickering like mad, but seems fine now. Garage door opener (on a different meter) let large amounts of smoke out, same with just about everything plugged in in the garage except for the PC (auto switching power supply), though the monitor that was plugged in is toast. I assume the PC is fine anyway; the HDD light is still flickering occasionally.

Called the apt office - on site - they said no, our lights aren't flickering at all. Called the power company, they pulled data from our meter and immediately shut it off (along with every other smart meter for our building), said it looked like our building lost neutral. Awesome, at least most of the building has smart meters (the ones that don't get to suffer through fried poo poo). They already have a truck out here working on the pad xformer and got one phase restored @ 129V (going by my UPS). Pretty happy to be on a co-op right now; had this been a deregulated market, it would have taken hours to get anything done. If it was Austin Energy, they probably would have pulled power, but it would have taken a bit. I'm sure it'll drop down to our ~122 volts once they get both legs reconnected, but the guy I talked to said the neutral is crispy, so we'll have sporadic power while they replace it. Won't have both legs until that's done.

Now if I can just get rid of the loving ozone + melted plastic smell... ugh.

We do have renters insurance, with $10k of electronics coverage, but I think we got lucky - the only things we seem to have lost are probably most/all of our Wiz bulbs, most of our night lights (we both hate the dark), and maybe the smart display (1st gen Google Nest Home) + my alarm clock (1st gen Lenovo smart clock). Maybe the garage PC monitor, but it was on its last legs anyway (ghosting pretty bad, and it was pushing 15 yrs old). All told, adds up to less than my deductible.

I'm hoping new power supplies for the alarm clock and smart display will revive them. Hell, maybe once they just sit for a bit they'll be okay - the wall wart for both were REALLY loving hot, but didn't smoke. I know the one for the Google/Nest/whatever display has a thermal cutout, I'm hoping the Lenovo one does too.

Garage door opener belongs to the apartment complex, and it's long depreciated (23 years old). The only pain in the rear end there is having to get another remote to clone the ONE they give us. Oh, looks like the power supply for my burglar alarm let go too (alarm is running on battery right now; it'll run for about a week on battery) - wart is too hot to touch and smells like ozone - but I have 3 or 4 spares sitting around. It's a huge wall wart with 2 wires going to it that carry 16 VAC, not exactly hard to swap. Pretty much all non-DIY alarms use the exact same $10 power supply anyway. As long as it didn't take out the power supply on the alarm board, I'm happy (if it did, I'll be irritated, because non-DIY alarms are a pain in the rear end to program, especially with 90s/00s wireless poo poo). I'm too tired to dig out another wart for it, so it's just unplugged for now (it has an 8aH battery in it for a 4 zone system with 1 keypad and 1 motion, 3 of those zones are wireless... that battery should be capable of running it for 1-2 weeks).

e: well looks like my UPS is also a causality. Didn't expect that. Still powers on, isn't reporting any issues, shows a fully charged battery...but the moment the power flickers it just goes dead. Oh well, the USB port was getting flaky anyway. I'll just swing by Fry's to get ano... oh. :smith:
