it is kind of true that if you take the hard line on everything you're just gonna get run out of town by your ostensible party members, and you won't accomplish anything. but i think you have to pick at least one thing that you stand firm and never compromise on, otherwise you fall into the moral tarpit of giving up on every single one of your beliefs just to stay in power.

I have since learned her sister believes Covid is a globalist conspiracy and my SIL was murdered by doctors at the hospital, (who actually worked hard to save my SIL) and that the vaccine causes Covid by shedding proteins even though my SIL never got vaxxed (try to make sense of that, I can't). Since my SIL spent a lot of time with her sister (one of the adults that got covid-19 during the car trip), i imagine some of that craziness inspired her refusal to take the pandemic seriously. When her brother tried to encourage her to vaccinate, she became hostile, or just tuned him out. Luckily, the grandkids and their immediate family are safe, and her brother tested negative. My Sister-in-Law was able to speak with some of her family before they knocked her out (she would never regain consciousness again) and expressed regret that she didn't get vaccinated and practice social distancing. It doesn't matter. She died. With waste tubes to deal with her body waste, ventilated, on massive doses of pain and paralytic drugs, and alone throughout without the comfort of family, with family denied the comfort of being with her. This is a filthy kind of grieving, muddied up with all of the feelings that go with someone being so careless, so reckless, so in denial of what is clearly a real and present danger, who threw away their lives and almost took many with her, all to prove a point that resulted in her death and the devastation of an entire family including 8 grandkids and a large extended family. The fact that she exposed so many people knowing all we know about Covid-19 adds an outrage to the grief. The fact her brother tried to talk her into vaccinating and it may have saved her, has him especially broken up at his failure to convince, on top of losing his beloved twin. He believes he failed to save her. This is a nasty, gross, kind of grieving. It was preventable, from start to finish. None of this had to happen. None of it. 3 weeks ago my Sister-in-Law discovered Covid-19 is a thing in the worst way anyone ever could. Now she is dead. She leaves behind 3 adult children and 8 grandkids, a twin brother, a husband of 45 years, and two sisters, multiple cousins, 3 dogs, a cat. She worked her rear end off her whole life for everything she had, and because of people who refuse to believe in Covid-19, it's all gone now. She will enjoy nothing she spent her life building. She will never see her grandkids marry, achieve, bear her great grandbabies. She will never enjoy the results of a lifetime of hard work. All for a concert, a casino, a car trip. All to prove to us how stupid we were going to feel in a few years once she did all the things with no Covid-19. By now I don't bother encouraging distancing, vaccines, or anything. I'm done trying. I view them as dangerous, and deadly. This far into Covid-19, this many dead, this much global devastation, and they still go out and catch Covid-19 and die. Families watch loved ones die and still stick to their anti-vaxxing guns. Who am I? No one. If all that can't convince people to be safe I got no power or hopes to do it myself. I need to stfu and stay the f away from these people. I'm not talking to people who anti-mask and anti-vaxx anymore. I am staying away from them. There is no hope for that crowd. They will kill themselves and all of us while telling us all it's their right. My SIL hogged an ICU bed in a massively overwhelmed hospital system where people without Covid are dying from emergencies they cannot get care for. My SIL refused the vaccine, but didn't refuse to take a much needed bed when she 'suddenly believed' in doctors and medicine once she couldn't breathe. They all do. The hypocrisy and irony of that is not lost in all this tragedy. Edit: I can't respond to everyone, but thank you all so much for sharing your stories and perspective, advice and wishes. It really helps.
