lol I know where you're coming from but I will say that recently, there's been some games on the recommended section on Steam that were really disgusting looking. I'm sure that's what they're referring to

steams frustrating cause they let outright fetish porn games stay up but then random lesbian/gay romance games get taken down arbitrarily

All those hack game ads switch up their marketing language from 'you won't last 6 seconds playing this game!':

DON'T LET YOUR PHONE SEE YOU PLAY THIS GAME, YOU WILL GO TO JAIL!!!!!!!

Unless that anime game is pushing for social justice the FBI isn't going to give a poo poo.

There's no justification, steam just does it. Near as anyone can tell, they have different people reviewing the games for approval, with no communal oversight, so what does/doesn't get let up is completely arbitrary. And most everyone is just rubberstamping everything, but there's one person who freaks out if they see a japanese school uniform even if it isn't in a game with anything sexual in it beyond some pg-13 flirting/romance. once something's up it tends to stay up but there's been scares with a few random games that are on there getting randomly threatened with takedowns and at least one completely non-pornographic lesbian romance game got denied despite a ton of way more pornographic vns going up before and after it. its stupid.

heck not exactly shedding tears for love lost on this one but i remember hearing about a porn game being unable to get its sequel approved by steam, even though the original game is up on steam and has the exact same kind of content. bizarre stuff and shows how completely arbitrary and random steam's approval process is, yet the difference between being approved and not approved is probably thousands of dollars of sales.

It was definitely "always" but you can get away with more when you dress like a cool Vampire LARPer in the 90s versus a steampunk tramp on Alex Jones in the 2010s with a string of failures three miles long in the rear view

Billy Corgan would have been a villain's lieutenant who dies to start act 4 and the final chapter of a JRPG and nobody would have batted an eye

What nagging trends does Arise discard to make it more palatable to a new audience?

- No divisive mascot as best I can tell? There's an owl but all he does is go HOOT so I think that's fairly benign. Might be a land mine waiting for me I suppose?
- Lots of side quests are easy to find now, you can just bring up the fast travel list and cursor through the list for any quest markers and go quickly pick them up.
- Maps are on the smaller side, very easy and fast to get around. Maps are pretty decent too
- Retry options are good if you game over
- Skits don't seem to be missable, they pop back up in the camps and you can chain through them
- Crafting or whatever meta skill game is much simpler now, hardly need to explain it at this point
- Looks and sounds like a fairly modern game finally

Trends that still remain:

- Extremely slow start
- Controls are responsive but still feels it could've benefited from one more button on the controller
- AI is a little better but melee still routinely feeds (defensive accessories helps a lot here though)
- Battles can get extremely flashy so it's easy to lose track of what's going on exactly

Honestly tales mascots arent usually that annoying, teepo and bienfu are the two pushiest ones. Zesty didnt have one, Mieu is pretty much just a normal character, noishe, repede, quickie, and rolo are all just silent animals, and a lot of tales games dont even have one, like graces. Unless people have strong feelings on the weird monkey from innocence i think just xillia and bersy being close together made people think it was more common than it is.
