I heard about it. And I'm really sad. I read about some of the negative stuff, but none of it takes away from the fact that he passed away and that's just super sad. I didn't know him the person and some of the negative associated things - just him the screenname and fellow webmaster of an early 2000's site influential in internet culture. And I'm sad to learn about the passing of the screenname and fellow webmaster.

When someone who you interacted with commits suicide, it's not unusual to ponder if you could have somehow changed that outcome.

In mid-May of this year, I was contacted by an old client who wanted to know if I would be willing to write a resumé for a friend who was not on the forums. I said sure.

As you can guess, he then told me that the friend was Lowtax.

I was a little dubious, but I don't really have the luxury of being able to reject a client, so I said okay.

Lowtax contacted me on Saturday the 29th. I told him that I didn't have any availability until June 4th, although I could maybe squeeze him in on the 2nd.

"Oh. I wanted to do it this weekend so I'll just give it a shot myself," he said.

I told him "I'm sorry, I'm 'attending' Balticon this weekend."

And he said:

"It's cool, nbd. Hope you have a good time!"

That was it. I didn't get to see what he had in terms of an "extensive" resumé, or find out how he would have described what he'd done with his life over the past 20 years.

And over the following six months, his Patreon sunk more, and he did worse poo poo on Youtube, and even if I had written a resumé for him, I can never promise to get someone hired - only to improve their odds.

When the news came out - especially when word started circulating that it had been suicide - I felt a little... potential indirect guilt. If I had cancelled my plans, I wondered... cleaned up his resumé... could I have maybe helped him get into a better financial situation, possibly prevented this?

It's a weird sort of relief to learn that, no, it wasn't because I didn't help him get a job, it was because he was angry at his ex-wife and the judge.

if he really wanted to work he could have found something anyway. it might have been a job where you have to eat poo poo just so you have something going while you look for something better, but a poo poo job is better than no job, even if he did have money to live off of. eh i dunno, that's just me.

Lowtax actually told me that helldump ruined the site in his eyes and that an admin opened it without asking him and he didn't find out for months. He seemed sincerely pissed about it even a decade later.
That's kind of interesting and meshes with my lurker-y take on his trajectory. Helldump seemed to throw off the early year energy that combined edgy above-the-rest-of-the-internet humor with a strong community vibe. It's hard to pull off both - probably because it doesn't make a ton of sense, which may be what made it interesting - and likely only works if everyone is working off anonymous usernames. Can't turn off that energy.

So could make sense from there he never quite clicks with the forum in the same way, but also lacked any other vision of something else and was jonesing for it, so you get half-assed attempts to rock the boat that just kind of fade out and leave a bizarre trail. Meanwhile, personal demons take over (to the detriment of a lot of people). At the end of the day the internet made him stupid.

That being said I'll toss in that 2005 talk he gave on internet communities is pretty insightful for 2005

i was a moderator on this site for less than a year and was able to use that to convince a major corporation to hire me to manage their own web forums and even pay me an actual salary while doing so.

to say rich had options is putting it lightly. of course he made money from the forums and later from his patreon scam, but there were many many points at which he could have easily gotten himself some kind of "vp of innovation" position at some startup or even at an established marketing agency, and made even more. up until his domestic abuse was revealed i doubt there was much time in which he would have needed to actually work an actual lovely job to maintain his lifestyle

RIP Lowtax. :(.

Any suicide is tragic, regardless of how you feel about the person.

He created this place, and it was his identity and legacy, even if his personal issues let it languish. Being so forcibly and publically removed from it by the community couldn't have been easy, whether it was deserved or not.

It has been pretty disheartening over the last few years reading all the unemphathetic hate towards him and glee in his passing - though I see the tragic irony from the classic SA ' go kill yourself' energy, he helped perpetuate. I always had pity for him as a tragic figure in this story, and hoped he could heal for the sake of his family and health.

I can't imagine what it is like to have the collective weight of SA clamouring for you to fail, even if it was his own deeds that led him there.

I don't know what I'm saying here, but I'll reiterate a message we all hear a lot but often fail to act upon: if you're struggling with mental health, seek help.
I think those celebrating are just the more vocal ones, and most are more conflicted about it. At least I know I am and I hope they are.

There's a lot to process about this if you've been here a while. He was apparently a very sick person, and he hurt a lot of people, but we're all here because he made this place, and this place has grown to be important to a lot of us, or was at one point. And he wasn't all bad for his whole life. It seems like he was a fun, goofy dork a decade or two ago. What the hell happened?

Suicide often provides survivors more questions than answers I guess.

Farewell Lowtax, I still enjoy your The Sims article from Feb 4, 2000. https://www.somethingawful.com/feature-articles/week-life-ithe/1/ I was actually in the Mangosteen thread when it went down and disagreed with the thread consensus that you did anything wrong. Anyway it seemed like after that you were always angry at the forums for misrepresenting what you were saying. And yeah, the people that posted on SA loved twisting stuff out of context or goofing on stuff that didn't happen and pretending it did.

As with many things, if you had just dealt with the "make poo poo up and run with it" forums stuff instead of getting angry and leaving to Fyad and then forever, I think SA could have ended up a better place. At the same time, given the way the internet changed overall, I doubt it.

I suspect the last few years were painful and frustrating, and I didn't think you were embellishing your problems quite as much as others did. In the end, there was nothing much to look forward to other than pain, mockery, and digging out of a 20 year hole. I hope you are at peace and wish you well.
