Early reviews look good. I'm a fan of small scale management games that let you build from the ground up and I've got some sort of weird inner desire to own a tavern.

Crossroads Inn never clicked for me and while I love Stardew and Graveyard Keeper, I just couldn't bring myself to do Travellers Rest as well because it just looked like too much overlap for me. This looks like it might scratch the itch without feeling like a Stardew total conversion. Trip report later I guess, unless a keg falls on me.

I’m really digging the new Sherlock Holmes game. It’s got some of the best writing in the series, and the chemistry between Sherlock and his partner is great. It can also be pretty funny. I also appreciate the more personal story that has also led to some great character moments.

Also this is easily the best when it comes to the detective elements. One thing I really like is an improved version of The Sinking City mechanism where you ordered the stages of the crime. This time you have to pick different images for each stage, based on your examination of the crime scene and reading your evidence. This leads you to really trying to understand what happened to pick the right images. Sure you could get it eventually through trial and error but it might take a while, and meanwhile your partner is berating you for being an idiot.

The only real downside is they’ve removed the adventure puzzle solving elements from the previous game. There’s no using inventory items to solve puzzles. Though some might not see that as a downside haha. Also the combat isn’t that great, but you can also skip all of it, like I’ve been doing.

There’s also a lot of side cases, many quite involved and interesting. I’ve played for about 20 hours and while I could solve the main game right now I’m holding off as I’m having so much fun solving side cases.

I'm hoping there is a lot more story, and more coherent story, than we saw in the demo. There wasn't much there, it was mostly gameplay. The gameplay is fun and cool though so if there's a bunch more environments to explore I'd probably be fine with that. But I'd also be interested to see a story. I've already heard the overarching plot element that Exo One was created after the interception of some kind of alien signal, so it was built by humans but is alien technology used to explore planets.

Factory Town came out of early access yesterday. It's on sale for $10 until the 24th. Very chill non-combat city/supply chain builder. Buildings can be relocated at no cost, population can't starve to death or anything. I'm not too far in, but I don't think you can really lose by accident, you'd have to locust most/all of the resources on the map without ever building a resource generator and then burn all the resources you'd need to build one.

Doesn't have a lot of reviews but https://store.steampowered.com/app/1592530/Blub_Emporium/ out yesterday seems like fun, maybe for those who want a no combat factory style game with cute graphics and a shop you can manage. Getting the 'sweet spot' while gathering seems a little tricky (it really does not want you to overshoot even a tiny bit) but other than that it's cute and fun, though I haven't played very long.

The Blub Blurb: Blub Emporium is a dense isometric shop manager that gives you access to the entire production chain. Gather resources from the wilderness then build factories to produce the things you sell. Collect tonnes of unique items, decorate everything, complete puzzles, and so much more!

Is around $20aus on Steam.

The problem isn't with the controls so much as with the limited sense of depth perception, it can be tough to judge exactly where you are and where you're going to land and it feels lovely when you gently caress up a good run by hitting the wrong side of a slope or by missing a speed boost because it was much closer than you thought. By the time I really got a hang of things the game was nearly over but hey, I bought it on Steam before I realized it was on gamepass so I can come back and play it any time I want, hooray

Exo One really feels like a sci-fi take on Journey. I'd thought it was going to be an open world exploration type thing from the demo, I certainly wasn't expecting it to be level based but it really goes nuts with the environment and gameplay variety in the back half so I'm not disappointed. The final level(s) makes good on a promise the introduction to the plot hints at and it's pretty incredible, it's the kind of thing I'd always dreamt of as a preteen space nerd. I like the way the plot is fed to you in short bursts of flashback dialog and flashes of imagery, it almost conveys a sense that you're not quite human anymore, that merging with the alien ship has eroded away your sense of self and that you've only retained bits and pieces of your history in the way a caterpillar might as it's reborn into a butterfly through metamorphosis, or maybe you've been out exploring the stars for untold aeons and those flashes of memory are all you've managed to retain in all that time.

That's not a spoiler, just an impression i got

quote:

CM Cold War is set in the tipping-point years of a conflict that gripped the world for 45 years. Between 1979-1982, both the NATO and Soviet Warsaw Pact militaries began the shift away from industrialized warfare of the early 20th century and towards the modern digital battlefield of today.

quote:

Combat Mission Cold War comes with 15 standalone scenarios set in the US V and VII Corp sectors of West Germany and 3 full length campaigns:

The NTC Campaign. The National Training Center in the California Mojave Desert was established in 1982, right at the end of Combat Mission Cold War’s time frame. The NTC campaign puts you in command of a US Army Company Team as it begins its rotation and trial by simulated fire against the premier Soviet style formation in the world, the NTC OPFOR (Opposing Force).

The US West German Campaign. Set in the southern Fulda Strategic Corridor between Fulda and Hanau, the US campaign unfolds across historically accurate maps as player take charge of the 2nd Bn TF of the 28th Infantry Regt in a race to stop the Soviet juggernaut. In keeping with the sandbox theme of Combat Mission Cold War, there are two versions of the US Campaign, 1982 and 1979 to allow players the opportunity to see and compare the differences in equipment between the two periods.

The Soviet Campaign. Set north and east of Fulda, the Soviet Campaign follows the “Ride of the 120th Motor Rifle Regt” on the opening 48 hours of a fictional “what if” West German invasion. Players will fight on historical battlefields “that never were”, such as Eiterfield and Alsfeld as part of the first wave of Soviet troops racing towards their divisional objectives.
Features:

Take command of either US or Soviet tactical formations, centering on the Company Team or Battalion Task Force between 1979 to 1982.
Tactical formations include highly detailed, historically accurate organizations, equipment and modeling of weapons effects that is second-to-none within the wargaming industry.
Full suite of era-accurate tanks and mechanized infantry fighting vehicles, including many not available in any other Combat Mission franchise: (M48, M60 series of tanks, M150 TOW, M1 (105), T64, and T80, etc.
Full suite of aircraft effects modeled on legendary platforms such as the iconic US F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair.
Scenarios range from small platoon-based actions to large Battalion battles.
The Soviets bring with them their service workhorses, the infamous Mig-23/27, the Su-17, the rare but powerful Su-25 Frogfoot, and the well-known Mi-24 series gunship, including the first “Hind A” version and the famous “Hind D.
Combat Mission Cold War also includes new and reoccurring battlefield innovations such as the introduction of Single and Dual-Purpose Improved Cluster Munitions delivered by both air and artillery support.

This turned out to be pretty freaking good actually. Nothing too complex but just some fun light gaming. It's turn-based combat but not in an arena or anything, it's just JRPG style battles with some extra complexity in the 'lanes' and the timing aspect. But well written and produced at least so far.

Very much enjoying Exo One, it's very relaxing and a lot of fun. And I can engage in some Skyrim-style mountain climbing as well which scratches a certain itch. I'm not sure how much farther there is to go but it changes up the environment and rules creatively as you go on which is nice.

Moncage is a good pickup as well, still slowly working through that. Took a little while for the rules to click and it can be pretty non-obvious at times but it looks nice and makes sense.

Tavern Master is nice as well - very simple in design and concept but what's there is polished and well thought out, which isn't obvious just by looking at it. Definitely more engaging than you might think.
