I'm glad to see more people liking this opener. If the show actually has gotten better (I am not able to tell) then that only makes the "nobody besides gringos are allowed to legally watch" decision all the more infuriating.

The president’s deconstruction of Burnham of why she’s unfit to captain a proper starship was both correct and good. Nice bit of self-awareness, Discovery.

I just remembered that they have the Holowall tech this season so the actors probably actually saw that spacedock graphic while doing the scene.

The implication that she's only in charge of Discovery because they're all misfits from the 23rd century and she's the best one of them for the job.

Yeah there were a few behind the scenes shots of it.

One thing I wish they'd do is adapt the tech so that the screens on Discovery's bridge are all mildly inset-3D all the time for elements like datasets or wireframes or maps. It'd basically be the same type of application of camera-tracking protection mapping - with the result being a more advanced version of this - and it'd be cool looking and let them have subtle 3D bits to the displays in every single station in every single shot without having to FX up floating holograms all over the place.

I choose to read it as an intentional thing. This crew are all in a shared state of denial about the fact they have truly left the 23rd century behind.

They all continue to work together on the same ship because what else do they have? Their crewmates are the only connection they have left of home, so they are dragging out pulling the bandaid off and moving onto new separate paths in this time.

They're like the toxic "the company is a family" style corporation, and they smile at each other to unspokenly communicate that yeah, they know too, but let's keep pretending one more day right.

This is a cool angle but there is zero chance they've put that kind of thought into it. They know they got blasted for being too pessimistic and dark and they are genuinely trying to overcorrect by forcing in all the goobing for the camera and suckin off fed values etc.

If I were looking for an in-universe explanation for their acting and script choices, I would say that the spore drive or something else on the ship just makes everyone a little high and more emotional than usual.

Straight up big stan of the spore drive here and it makes way more intuitive sense to me than subspace warp travel whatever the gently caress is going on.

I'm re-watching Babylon 5 at the moment and even though it looks a bit janky it just gives you so much of a sense of wonder. Discovery should be like this, it's 1000 years in the future now. But it's not. Space is boring in discovery. The galaxy doesn't make sense any more and they've just completely hosed up the setting.

To be completely honest, B5 looked janky when it was first run, so that's not necessarily a feature of the remaster. It's part of its charm, and doesn't mean I don't love it.

It's not dissimilar from Burn-mom's dressdown in the Ni'Var episode, and Spock's analysis in Season 2 about her emotional need to save the galaxy.
The writers are aware of how Burnham is being perceived but they keep writing her that way.

I don't think so, the rest of the world knows how to google and find where it's streaming illegally. This place still doing archaic rules about files or are we allowed to at least say PrimeWire or whatever?

Michael on paper is one of the more interesting captains. In the show she probably would be too if they had made up their minds about her at any point. Person with the time-travelling mom inventor, a step-vulcan upbringing, pivotal to her Brother Spock's humanity, weird mutiny --> rescued from prison by evil captain on magic spaceship, has a relationship with a human dude who is actually a different klingon dude with some hosed up surgery and brain-fuckery, saves federation from section 31's mess, goes into future, toys around as han solo for a while, and then stops a space baby from crying or did she just punch a green lady?

Trouble is everything just flashes by, nothing is examined, who she is swings from episode to episode. I don't think anyone who jumped on season 3 or 4 would really get any sense that Burnham was ever raised in Vulcan society.

Nah! A little chocolate will do

Prodigy had a Bakshi Lord of the Rings reference with the evil robot skulking with the crew under some roots, that's pretty loving cool.

Also it's looking like Gwyn is gonna take over as captain with Dal as XO so that will be nice, good to have the most competent one in charge

Honestly, that was such an awkward and poorly implemented aspect of her character that I wouldn’t be surprised if the current production team are trying to gloss over it as much as possible.

I let Discovery season 1 play a few episodes a time or two after it cruelly autoplays itself and I was laughing at Michael in her Vulcan hair-cut, still trying to do some reserved-Vulcan acting. I think it's pretty much as soon as the mutiny starts or is over that she permanently changes character to full-blown regular human.
