I confused the gently caress out of my coworker yesterday while talking about cryptozoology, he was like “I never heard of that coin before” before I had to explain to him that cryptozoology is about mythical creatures and not mythical gains.

I love that this was the intended arc all along; his very first episode is called Strike Force.

Though there's also a lot of Judge Dredd in the character, appropriately.

It's good, good. Regular good. Good in a way that criticizes why what it is usually sucks.

It's really impossible to recommend. I don't know anyone who had any strong positive feelings about the original, and I myself hated it as a kid. This show is perfect for someone who hates Save By The Bell, but that's a hard reccomend. Hey, watch this better thing of a thing you hate. If you're neutral on it, then you kind of have to sell it on being a deconstruction and critique of that kind of teen show.

The latter

It’s created by a former writer on 30 Rock/Mindy Project and one of the writers was responsible for the Funny Or Die series “Zack Morris is trash”.

It’s much more tongue in cheek and has a goofier/weirder sense of humor than Cobra Kai. It is a send up of the original while also being a continuation. The original gang are even punched down on a fair amount, but in like a fun way.

It even (mild SBTB spoilers) canonizes Franklin & Bash for Zack and Showgirls for Jessie as their actual characters after Saved By The Bell

We're talking they have straight up take down lines on both Max Landis and Josh Whedon. The writers are just having fun.

My friend wants to do a Get Back watch event (her dad has a space in a warehouse that he's converted into a private man cave/bar with with kegs, cocktails, bar tables, neon lights, jukeboxes, projector etc.) I've only seen the first 45mins of Part 1 (want to save it) so I have a question:

I don't think it's feasible to do an 8 hour watch along. Am I better off trying to word up the attendees to watch up to the end of part 1 or 2 before the event and just start the watch-along at the beginning of Parts 2/3?

In other words, are parts 2 or 3 better group viewing experiences (I assume the concert is at the end of part 3)?

Don't underestimate the power of the gambling lobby. See, for example, how in states that started going smoke-free in indoor places like bars and restaurants years ago, casinos were almost universally exempted. They wanted legalized sports betting outside of Vegas, Atlantic City was the first domino to fall and now it's pretty much universal.

Look, complain all you want about the Melanie Lynskey affair plot on Yellowjackets (it seems like they could be gesturing at a paranoia plot, or it's just some sort of conspiracy, I can't believe its just an affair and I'd be happy for them to move to the next stage of it all) but the Tawny Cypress kid plot is actually The Worst.

Does anyone actually think they're gonna go supernatural with this stuff? I can't quite believe they will, but I'm all for Wendigo horror if they do actually go there.

Did they know this going in? This is definitely a show that would benefit from being shorter rather than dragging it out, so I'm just hoping knowing there's no Season 3 means they can make bolder moves faster. I really want her to kill Kevin lol

I don't think they've started filming yet.

TBH I thought they'd go with a pregnancy plot before the show ended, given that's what ALWAYS happens to the wife in these sitcoms, but that would also have been loving depressing given the show's tone and thesis.

Yeah, I like the show but I'm not sure how much room it really has to grow and continue. Its obviously not remotely resolved right now so I'm glad there's a second season, but at some point I think we need some closure/payoff or this thing is gonna get really loving dark and/or silly.

I guess the positive spin on it would be that the show could develop into a Breaking Bad type show if it lasted awhile. But it feels more like it could degrade to a Weeds type show.

The Hailee Steinfeld character in Hawkeye dunks on Imagine Dragons in the latest episode. I know pop culture jokes are important to Marvel but it feels like the kind of thing that ages a show instantly. Also the credits say the episode was directed by "Bert & Bertie" which are apparently real people that go by that name.

I'm guessing there will be more to the affair plot but I wish they'd given the whole thing more...oomph. They did such a great job establishing her as a listless disappointed housewife in the first episode and episode 2 gave us a glimpse at the darkness beneath it all when she was dealing with the rabbit. Mostly I want to see her snap at her daughter though (that actress is doing a great job playing a little teenage shithead)

Also disappointed with creepy kid subplot. I think it would be fun to have it turn out to be a hosed up stalker/home invader. Some people are suggesting Taissa has some kind of split personality that antagonizes Sammy, and that her wife may be a delusion/hallucination altogether but those are cheap narrative choices. Combined with what we know about Lottie, this would come together in an embarassingly bad take on psychiatric disorders. Not that horror is known for its sensitive, nuanced portrayals of mental illness, but I'm hoping they show some tact and originality.

Re: supernatural elements, the creators say "We were most interested in that line between a genuine supernatural phenomena or some sort of madness that takes hold, so that’s a line we’re going to be playing throughout the show" so we'll see what happens!

It's as close as they're gonna get to faithfully adapting the Fraction run such that it fits within the MCU. Russian track suits are saying bro constantly. There is pizza dog. Unclear yet if Hawkeye is great at boats.

I've seen some loving insane takes on the internet, and for whatever reason split personalities / hallucinated spouses / lovers / whatever turn up a lot. A lot of people think Adam is a hallucination too, but it's stupid and doesn't track.

My favourite bad theory is that the cast cannibalised their as-yet-nonexistant babies for protein, which is the kind of theory only someone who's never spent time with a pregnant person could come up with.

Yeah that about sums it up. Obviously the comic is a bit different, because Clint knows Kate there for a while already and less avengers are currently dead during that storyline.
The show itself is fun so far. Steinfeld and Renner are really selling their dynamic. And the actress who plays Echo in episode 3 is really badass.

The only take on it I've bumped into that I give credence to is this Vox article by Emily VanDerWerff who got to see the first 6 episodes, because 1) I don't always agree with her, but I'm familiar with her enough that I trust her opinions to be from looking at the thing carefully, even if I disagree and 2) she's actually gotten to see until at least episode 6.

So I totally get the hesitance and skepticism, I feel them too, but I've still got a teeny ember of cautious optimism. I don't really trust them to handle the creepy kid subplot well, but Emily seems to think they did an okay job, and I gotta admit that the kid is legit incredibly creepy*. Likewise, the Shauna affair thing hasn't done anything yet, but I could at least see it doing some interesting things down the road (if not the affair itself, then as a symptom of her on-going domestic strife).
