Yeah, tickets for GY!BE in January. First gig in ages, obviously, and very much looking forward to it. Now I don't know how I feel... Just have to see what happens I guess.

hey guys and gals im getting really sucked into some more old school vibes and i was wondering if any of you can recommend post rock bands or even post metal stuff that sounds like Neil Young? Like on his sick solos with those chugging bluesy riffs that go on for minutes at a time, just this perfect fusion of psych rock and the precursors to more heavy metal riffs. stuff like EITS or Godspeed is obviously more orchestral and movement oriented, not as many instruments taking center stage. I guess im asking what are your, uh, grooviest post rock riff masters? I wish i knew more about music so that I could properly articulate it beyond this.

Im talking about stuff that sounds like this

as an aside, ive really mulled it over for a few years and i think I can definitively state that a different version of that song is my favorite piece of music and I really recommend everyone ITT who smokes weed and likes to rock listen to this version

that video got me through a lot of rough days. its about the same length of time as my old bike commute so I would pedal up, pop in my earphones, and I had my entire ride mapped out to the different parts of the song.

Hey post rock thread, you all seemed to enjoy my last album and I just released a new one today that I've been working on all year. It's one seamless composition from start to finish, something I've wanted to do for a long time but couldn't ever quite pull off until recently. It's in a similar vein as my last one - instrumental, lots of dynamics, loud abrasive guitars, sampling, cassette tape lops, ambient sections, spoken word - but I learned so much about production in the time between then and now and I feel like this one is on an entirely new level, both compositionally and production-wise.

Speaking of Spotify, the algo on there recommended me a band called We Lost the Sea after listening to some mono and gybe, and they're pretty solid, but one of the tracks on the album I listened to has a bunch of samples from some audiobook about lucid dreaming or something, and it was just so obviously trying to be godspeed that it turned me off a little. The album was departure songs, apart from that it was a nice little listen, tho fairly derivative of all the big post rock bands.

Yeah that’s probably the weakest part of this genre overall. There’s really only a handful of basic ideas that lead you down the path of post rock or post metal, and unless you are laser focused on making your own unique sound be the focus of your band, and not just content on making musical variations in the same themes, then you’re basically gonna sound like EITS or GSY! or This will Destroy You, and sometimes you just end up with a band with a band like God is an Astronaut, a band whose sound is so unique and clearly defined that all of their music sounds completely identical. I have 5 GIAA albums I’ve listened to 50 times a piece and I couldn’t name a single song on any of them, because they all bleed together.

Meanwhile I could probably write out the track list to every EITS or GSY!BE album from memory, because each of their songs has a different personality and idea, and different sounds between them.

Another band that understands the right way to evolve and change tunes is Caspian, honestly maybe the best example of a band growing and changing their sound into something more unique and cool

A few years ago on Spotify or whatever I had a pretty good string of random post-x bands that all managed to sample the "mad as hell" speech from Network :v:

A portly feline wizard waddles forth, muttering something about conjured food.

I first got into post-rock with Caspian's Tertia, then later seeded a Spotify account with them (back when Spotify was a Pandora clone). I listened to a lot of post-rock at work for probably a year straight. There were maybe a small handful of songs that were mildly interesting at best, but by and large the majority was dull, overly droney, and unremarkable. Or too flowery and uplifting for my tastes (Caspain certainly does some of that too). This includes all the "big names" that frequently come up in this thread. That is, except for pg.lost and Jakob. Everything I heard from those two groups caught my ear immediately and I'm now a big fan of their work.

So yeah, I'm picky and only like 3 bands of this type. I'd say keep listening, there's probably a group or two within the sub-genre that's right for you.

It took me like 4 years before I could listen to any post rock and not immediately just think “oh this is just [Band] but they [Slight Difference]” whenever a new band would get posted on the music forums, eventually you just have to make piece with the fact that slow, heavy, instrumental music is just gonna have a tremendous amount of overlap and there’s only so much you can do without incorporating more and more electronics, like 65daysofstatic or The Autumn Leaf

Junkenstein

It does feel like post-rock bands get more poo poo for being derivative than other genres. Maybe because the genre was all about experimentation at the start and for the vast majority of post-rock bands now, it's very clear who they're imitating.

But gently caress it, I'll enjoy a good EITS clone the same way I'll enjoy a good Motorhead clone.

I haven't listened to The Album Leaf in a while but he's so good. On Your Way was a song I used as an alarm for a while in high school when I used a CD alarm clock. It actually made me want to wake up and listen to the whole thing.

He recorded that album in Iceland at the Sigur Ros dudes' studio and they were involved in its creation, IIRC.

It's just the lack of lyrics/vocals/samples. GY!BE don't just get props for being first, they also (on their first two records) used vocal samples and found sound to help make their segments of music seem distinct.

There are millions of songs that just go "G > C > D", but because they all have lyrics, it's easier to not say "meh, I've heard that before" because there's something in it that you literally haven't heard before

A Thousand Arms just released their newest compilation Hemispheres: Volume VI. You can get a download code for Bandcamp here for each side. Side A is bands from the western hemisphere, Side B is bands from the eastern.

If you’re a Spotify person they also put out the playlists for streaming, no Apple music yet :(

These comps usually have at least one or two new bands on them that I find myself getting in to, so they’re real good for curated discovery.

I guess I just imagined that this leaked a while ago?

I used to be a big GY!BE completionist, but in my later years I’ve tended to think of that tape as a bit of a red herring and that it’s reputation has far outstripped it’s potential quality. After all, if it was really good the band either would’ve reissued it or folded some of the music into later compositions.

I’d be delighted to be wrong though :)
