I'm fine with non title matches providing: 1) there's a reason (even if it's just "the champ wants to wrestle") 2) there's a reward for winning. So the justification of "Riho wasn't officially eliminated from the battle royal, so she gets a chance to get a title match as a make good" is perfectly OK with me.

They suck in WWE because it's shorthand for "you're going to see this exact same match twice". AEW both doesn't make it a foregone conclusion the challenger wins and two matches between the same two wrestlers can be very different thanks to creative freedom in AEW.

The other thing is that WWE does it in the most unsatisfying way humanly possible. The few times AEW has done "beat the champion to get a title match" matches, at the very least you get a really good match out of it that then builds to an actual big title match, and they at least try to justify it in some way or another. The challenger wins a battle royal, they earned it by doing this or that. In WWE, they'll just do these matches completely at random, unannounced, with no justification whatsoever. Often with challengers who've already lost to the champion numerous times recently. Then they'll win in 30 seconds with a distraction rollup, and then they'll do it again like 2 or 3 more times before the PPV so by the time you get the Real Actual Match you've already seen both the challenger and the champion look big dumb idiot losers multiple times, and then often the Actual Match ends in a dogshit non-finish anyway so it was all for nothing to begin with.
