Y'know when you think about it, the absolute rigid rules regarding Chess pieces and Chess' state of play bares a lot of similarities with Casino Mage.

Yeah but there isn't a chess piece that flips over the board, scattering other pieces, and pulls the chair out from under one or both players.

All reality is a game. Physics at its most fundamental, the very fabric of our universe, results directly from the interaction of certain fairly simple rules, and chance; the same description may be applied to the best, most elegant and both intellectually and aesthetically satisfying games. By being unknowable, by resulting from events which, at the sub-atomic level, cannot be fully predicted, the future remains makeable, and retains the possibility of change, the hope of coming to prevail; victory, to use an unfashionable word. In this, the future is a game; time is one of the rules. Generally, all the best mechanistic games - those which can be played in any sense "perfectly", such as a grid, Prallian scope, 'nkraytle, chess, Farnic dimensions - can be traced to civilisations lacking a realistic view of the universe (let alone the reality). They are also, I might add, invariably pre-machine-sentience societies.

The very first-rank games acknowledge the element of chance, even if they rightly restrict raw luck. To attempt to construct a game on any other lines, no matter how complicated and subtle the rules are, and regardless of the scale and differentiation of the playing volume and the variety of the powers and attibutes of the pieces, is inevitably to schackle oneself to a conspectus which is not merely socially but techno-philosophically lagging several ages behind our own. As a historical exercise it might have some value, As a work of the intellect, it's just a waste of time. If you want to make something old-fashioned, why not build a wooden sailing boat, or a steam engine? They're just as complicated and demanding as a mechanistic game, and you'll keep fit at the same time.

I just added a guy after a tavern brawl game to let him know that he missed that putting poison on Flurgl can clear the board. He thanked me and said he was new to the game. I asked what made him start playing since the barrier to entry is so high that most people playing have done so for years. It turns out that he's blind and someone recently made a mod that makes playing the game possible without sight. I had no idea, but according to him there's a influx of new players from it. So that's the kind of thing that it takes to expand the player base in constructed.

Today I needed one game to finish two dailies, so I queued up a Pirate Warrior game. I had 12 minutes to play before I needed to go teach; plenty of time, right? Nope. Priest, roping every turn, playing a no win condition deck. Twelve minutes later I conceded even though I had a winning position with Juggernaut on the board and Smite in hand. Can't wait for this to return to the meta!

Yep poo poo like this is why I no longer play for ranking. I run into a player like this. or some dumbass deck that's waiting to draw the entire deck or some OTK condition and I concede and move on. Way happier with the game now.

I am not a very high level chess players so of course I'm completely unqualified to comment on this, but at the professional level you don't think the players put an incredible amount of time and effort into understanding the openings that their opponents prefer to play and developing strategies (in game as things develop) to avoid positions where their opponent will be more comfortable (stylistically) than they are? What you said basically boils down to balancing the different elements of hearthstone (tempo, control, value etc) and understanding when to commit your resources.. that's not really much different than developing good positional understanding in chess, where you have to understand what moves from a wide array of options are good in a position vs what moves are bad in a position. I think there are reasonable comparisons that can be made about the kind of thinking that goes on while playing in both games.

Also for what it's worth If I remember correctly Slysssa got her #2 ranking on the EU server which is roughly comparable to being ranked #2 in North Dakota, and that was before she became exclusively a battlegrounds player for the last 2 years. Sad!

In all seriousness though, I guess any cross-promotion is good.. Chess has become pretty huge on twitch recently whereas hearthstone has went the other direction.

Have been storming through things with this; there's enough lifesteal to keep yourself alive against odd questline hunter and pirate warrior, and then you wreck them with the insane charge damage.

Righteous defence is SO NICE. Even helps negate annoyances like Mutanus, because you can drop the stats right back on to something in hand.

A Flash is almost certainly getting swapped for Cariel hero card, and probably another for the Scarlet guy.

Are you me? I only got 2 legendaries in 64 packs, one being goddamn Vanndar on the 2nd pack, then Tavish 36 packs later, then timer sitting at 26 at the moment. I looked through my records from the last few expansions and I usually had 4-5 legos by 60-odd packs.

Not that it matters since I'm going to craft most of the set anyway, and also have 32 Wild packs that I can open from a previous purchase once it goes live (since I have every card otherwise).
