Early access; yet another kickstarter! I backed this one because it was cheap and it looks cute/fun. I won't play it until it's out of EA though.

quote:

Conquer dungeons, find romance, upgrade the town, build your stats, or just take it easy in this fast-paced turn-based RPG.

quote:

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“I aim to reach a mostly complete state within a month of launching into Early Access (December 2021). Even still, I plan to give the game around two extra months to give me time to get some of my bigger plans implemented and let the balancing work itself out.”
How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“Plans for the full version of the game include:
Improved balancing.
Improved and more fleshed out fishing.
A casino.
Complete storylines for all three individual girls (currently partial).
Various UI/UX improvements.
At least triple the amount of Town Projects.
Additional dungeons/monsters.
Additional outfits.
Additional characters, missions, and events.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
“Currently Hearts of the Dungeon list contains:
100 dungeons and OVER 100 monsters.
Over 20 boss battles.
Full bestiary.
Three full sets of upgradeable abilities.
A full storyline over the first 50 dungeons.
Partial individual storylines with each of the three girls.
Fishing.
Adventure Mode.
Multiple outfits for each girl.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“The price will not change when the game leaves early access.”

Fights in Tight Spaces rules. It is a really nice mix between a tactics fighter and a deckbuilder. I am only on my second run, but I managed to beat the first four worlds. My favorite approach is to play it like Into the breach. Move enemies around to make them attack each other. And then throw them into a deathpit.
Apparently I just sat on that game for 6 hours. It's been a while since a game grabbed me in such a way.

Siralim Ultimate is a really, really, really big game. For that reason, this store description is extremely detailed to help you get a grip on exactly what you can expect from the game. If you're not up to read it all, though, here's a quick rundown of some of the main features:

1200+ creatures to collect
Fuse your creatures together - the offspring inherits its parents’ stats, traits, and even the way they look!
Randomly generated dungeons spanning 30 unique tilesets
Customize your castle with thousands of different decorations
Engage in strategic 6v6 battles
Craft Artifacts and Spell Gems for your creatures
Choose from one of 30 specializations for your character and earn perks that change the way your creatures fight in battle
Insane amount of post-story content that will keep you engaged for thousands of hours (yes, really!)

Reviews say it has the opposite problem, it's stretched out too thin over a too empty open world, and there's hours of story segments that drag the game down. But yeah other people have been vibing with it more so it's probably worth a shot.

It absolutely owns. I haven't finished it so I don't know how long it is but pretty sure I've been playing it for well over 5 hours and it doesn't seem to be ending very soon. I guess I'd estimate 10-12 hours but I can't find anything online that says exactly how long it takes.

Regardless, it's a great game. A lot of the tools they give you are absolutely genius. The various Rites (powers) are all really useful in different ways. And when you finally get the Drift Trance ability it changes the way you fight completely.

For my money it's got a good story that keeps me wanting to play, it looks really really nice, and the action is excellent and definitely the highlight. I might wish that there were difficulty levels, some spots can be pretty tough until you figure out what to do but overall it can be a bit easy, even on controller where it's harder to aim.

Still I'm blown away. Way better than I honestly expected. Felt like it came out of nowhere after having a trailer with essentially no gameplay at all a year or two ago.

Anyways, new games:

Monochrome adventure puzzle game White Shadows kind of looking like Limbo or Little Nightmares but with a very unique stylized look.

quote:

White Shadows is a cinematic puzzle-platformer where you play as a little Ravengirl trying to escape a brutal dystopia founded on oppression and violence that puts her at the bottom of its hierarchical social ladder.

Composed of a vast network of towers rising from the void of post-catastrophe darkness into the sky above, the city our young adventurer seeks to escape is a dangerous place to be. She will have to find ways to avoid the teeth of machinery primed to grind her into dust, leap across rickety infrastructure that bridges the cavernous darkness all around and avoid the watchful eyes of guards ready to gun her down. She will travel to the city’s brightest highs and delve to its darkest depths on her journey, discovering her destiny among the last free people alive.

White Shadows’ striking architectural forms and stunning monochrome art style combine to create a place steeped in atmosphere. It’s a world where the lies of the elite are plastered across its walls, where twisted forms of entertainment are used to keep everyone in their place, and where hope seems in short supply.

quote:

Get wrecked in this immature grown-up RPG about a trio of troublemakers stumbling their way through a giant mecha tournament. Repair and upgrade the team’s hand-me-down rig, pick up odd jobs to pay the bills, and battle the best-of-the-best all while running from the regrettable choices of the past.

I haven't bought it yet but I'm watching a streamer play it on Twitch and it's way more hectic than I figured it would be (maybe in a good way?) The main loop seems to be having a real-time trading window of about 2 1/2 minutes during which you're accepting requests from various aliens (like "I need a lung and a bladder") and then trying to grab those off a scrolling list of parts but there's other AI traders grabbing them too, so you have to be fast. And then you can also invest in stocks for specific organs. Seems interesting, and I'd probably play it on Gamepass (if I had that), but also maybe overpriced at $16.99 so I might wait for a deeper sale price somewhere down the line.

Also the music is good.

Wow, what a weird blast from the past to release on Steam. Creatures Docking Station was the last release in the Creatures line and came out in 2001. One of the first virtual life type simulators, you get these Furby looking critters called Norns who have their own language, but you can teach them human speak (or there's an object that does it automatically) and they'll move around and do stuff with their own AI, but you can also help them by moving stuff in the environment, leading them by the hand, trying to teach them stuff, typing short commands to try and get them to do something, etc. They age, eventually die, mate, lay eggs which have a mix of the two parents' "DNA". There's also other creatures, these Ettins who walk around and just break your poo poo, and Grendels who like to hit the Norns and cause disease. And there's a genesplicer so you can create horrible Grendel/Norn hybrids. There's also a bunch of different Norn Genotypes with different characteristics, like some are more brave, some are more social, some are more hardy. I always thought it was pretty ambitious for its time, and I spent a lot of time messing with it back in the day.

Docking station is a small four room thing which has everything you need to mess with the Norns, and that part is up on Steam for free. The main feature of Docking Station, however, was being able to send your Norns out online for people to use and getting some horrible Grendel/Ettin cross species nightmare back. That's all disabled now since the online servers are dead. But it still works as a free introduction.

The important thing is that they have Creatures 3 up as a DLC for $5.99. The Docking Station is small, but Creatures 3 is a big world for them, and you can dock your docking station with it and then there's all these biomes like a jungle where they can catch diseases, and a volcano which they hate, and a beach which they like but they get lonely, etc. The biomes even have a rudimentary ecosystem.

Really weird to see a re-release of this in 2021, but if you like virtual life sims and can get past figuring out how to play it (I don't recall any sort of a tutorial but there's a manual PDF available from the Steam store page, and according to the Steam forums, manuals for Docking Station and Creatures 3 are in the installation folder), it's probably worth picking up the free Docking Station part and then if you dig it, getting the full world for six bucks.

It also sounds like there's a developer actually working on it and doing patches and stuff, here's the post about what the game has and some of the stuff they've patched in which used to be mods and whatnot: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1659050/view/3103539908188968529

Agreed I like it. Some elements maybe feel a little phoned-in, but it's very solid and a good time and has good dungeons without being overly complex in any area. Also thank gently caress it's not a roguelite.
