I reckon this is some defence or intelligence thing where they wanted an easily removable webcam for clearance reasons, so they probably made 9000% markup as well.

honestly the message makes it sound like we’re trying to ward them off from our buried treasure.

a diagram and drawing of the atomic elements involved probably would have been more effective.

if memory serves the "not a place of honor" message was supposed to be the basic one and there was intended to be much more specific and detailed information available nearby for more discriminating audiences.

i mean, those words are just the design principles for the physical representations of the message, and a lot of anthropological, historical, psychological, etc. work went in to figuring out how to convey this to someone 8000 years from now who has no conception of our language and could assign completely different meanings to the symbols we currently understand

the idea of "the danger is in a particular place" would mean here where the physical warning totems would be

but like, that sentence makes no sense now and it seems like an insane called shot to suggest that it will mean something in the future. they should've just gone hog wild and written the same thing 40 different ways and then translated it to all the big languages so it could at least be a cool rosetta stone in the future. the more redundant the message, the more likely it could be understood by whatever creatures live here after humanity dies

Apparently this was the plan!

https://www.wipp.energy.gov/library/PermanentMarkersImplementationPlan.pdf

quote:

To enhance the potential for comprehension of the messages, it is planned that they will be inscribed in seven languages:

English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, and Navajo.

This spread of languages representing different cultures and geographical regions will, it is hoped, potentially allow the markers to serve as “Rosetta Stones” for future populations, and thus increase the chance that they will be understood. Other means of improving possibilities for comprehension include the use of complementary diagrams and pictographs, use of simple words and short sentences, and through the testing of message comprehension with populations indigenous to areas speaking each language, as described in this plan.

The directives (written in Russian, English, Spanish, Babylonian cuneiform, classical Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Sanskrit, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew and Arabic) range in theme and scope, urging humans to "avoid petty laws and useless officials," "balance personal rights with social duties," "guide reproduction wisely—improving fitness and diversity," "leave room for nature," "protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts" and "unite humanity with a living new language," among others.

like described in that longer report, those words that are in the images posted here are not what would be written, those were the bigger ideas they would try to represent in physical form through large structures that are intended to hit something deep in the human psyche common between many different cultures and hopefully comprehensible to whatever cultures might exist millenia from now

I think the technical term for this sort of political slogan is "Apple Pie Bullshit". For any given political message, ask yourself if a reasonable person could agree with its opposite:

"There must be no compromise between personal rights and social duties" "Reproduce wantonly and pay no heed to fitness or diversity" "gently caress nature" "Terrorize people and nations with unfair laws and draconian courts" "Divide humanity with countless dead and immutable languages"

I guess you could make a case for the first two. Kind of, except the first is basically libertarianism.txt. The second actually is a reasonable position because you're rejecting eugenics.
