Happy to see me?
The Nirvana rip-off episode? Caught it one night randomly channel hopping and it's the one where I was officially 100% done with The Simpsons.

I always knew that from Season 10 onward it was ropey but there was always one gag or two which still raised a laugh. That episode was so unbelievably bad on so many fronts. If The Principal and the Pauper was the first symptoms of the show heading off rails, this one was the corpse being kicked back into the bonfire.

I actually saw the episode. Pity me

That 90s Show was awesome because of just how angry it made the Comic Book Guy crowd. Like the episode itself was at best passable (well-done music bits though), but the frothing, incoherent rage at the fact it dared change the chronology (which of course was previously absolutely immutable and logically consistent) was a joy to behold.

I mean just look at this:

quote:

Robert Canning of IGN strongly disliked the episode, also feeling that the continuity change was not a good choice. He said, "What 'That '90s Show' did was neither cool nor interesting. Instead, it insulted lifelong Simpsons fans everywhere. With this episode, the writers chose to change the history of the Simpson family." He gave the episode a 3/10, and suggested that this episode should have been set a decade earlier to fit classic Simpsons continuity.[4] He later added that it was his least favorite episode of the nineteenth season, and that it "was an episode that [he] will be erasing from [his] personal Simpsons memory bank."[5]

Anything that makes people that insufferable so angry is an unalloyed good.

Actually people hate that episode because it's bad and unfunny.

Really though it's because homer is a dad and he's their dad and it's fine seeing him in the late 60's or early 70's because that was a long time ago and a dad could have done that. Dad didn't play in a grunge band, that's ridiculous, he was like 40 when that happened.

Its because fans of the original decade of good simpsons are older than Homer now, and don't want Homer to be reset as a teen in the 90s, and then again in the 2000s.

Been said that it explains a lot that the current Simpsons writers haven't seen much if any classic Simpsons.

Also doesn't help that Homer and Marge really don't work as anyone younger than baby boomers; their whole lifestyle with the breadwinner and housewife was already quaintly anachronistic in the early 90s, and completely alien to millennials onwards. And the whole theme that Homer basically stumbled into relative comfort and success (again, Frank Grimes points out that it's something only even vaguely plausible in mid 20th century America) and Marge went along with it because she gotta marry someone, and everyone knows that Bart doesn't have any hope of repeating that.

It's almost as though the show should not still be making new episodes. Because you're 100% right. It started as a skewering of 50s-70s sitcoms, and now it's... well, I don't know what it is because I haven't really watched a single episode in more than a decade.

Edit: I'm still confused about who's watching the new episodes. My 13 year old LOVES the Simpsons (not because I've pushed her that way either) and will happily tell you that it's decent up to season 15 or so, but has zero interest in the second half of the show.

I walked by a bar sometime last year. I glanced in the windows and Simpsons was on the TV. It looked to be a flashback where Homer, Marge and some other Springfield regulars were in a high school play about the Y2K bug.
