Borgore put "suck it bitch" before a drop and layered gagging sounds over basslines. The ultra-sexual stuff is juvenile even through the most generous lens. Sure, it might be a joke, or a persona, or just "his art" but in a post Marilyn Manson world it's a bit more complex.

Yeah it's mostly this. Also he was a dick to my friends when they saw him live, wouldn't allow photos and gave off major diva vibes. Also he served in the IDF.

I agree stuff like that can be tasteless but I'm not going to assume he's a rapist based on art and I sure hope he didn't assault anyone. I don't think it's good practice to wish without evidence that someone turns out to be a rapist. Does seem to be a trash person otherwise though.

Would it help you to know that he's already a war criminal by association? I'm not 'hoping he's a rapist' (though I guess it does come off that way when I reference the hashtag), I just think his music is terrible and he's an rear end in a top hat, and wouldn't be surprised based on his body of work if he did do something gross, but mostly I just want him to go away forever.

Interesting article. He's certainly leaned into the sleazy stuff more than most, but perhaps it's just a facade.

What?

All I will say about Borgore’s content and sexist vibes is that anecdotally, from having been right in the middle of dozens of heavy Borgore shows, the women in his crowds just love this vile, disgusting poo poo. Like he’s one of the only acts I’ve EVER seen with a mostly female mosh pit. Borgore crowds are an order of magnitude more female and better looking than standard wook crowds, you could EASILY tell a Borgore crowd apart from a Bassnectar crowd or a 12th Planet crowd or an Excision crowd. He’s really big with sex workers and strippers. You will see every single woman singing along with “Syrup” or “Salad” or “SUCK MY FUCKIN DICK, BITCH!!”. It’s almost like… for them, in a way, Borgore is the bro step DJ for women, despite everything cosmopolitan Twitter feminists would have you believe.

It’s just like how some women loving love gangsta rap and listen to Future when literally all he ever sings about is cheating on his girlfriends with his other girlfriends. Being sexy and hot is just another kind of power fantasy for people, that’s what this music does for people, IMO.

When I have friends who are like “how can you like Borgore, he’s disgusting” I show them this track from one of his very early releases, an instrumental

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea6j9ofhrYU

Borgore started out in Israel as the drummer for heavy metal bands. He’s classically trained on the piano and saxophone. Definitely a spoiled rotten silver spoon rich kid, but he has really complex and interesting grasp of musical movements and I just think the production quality of his tracks is like head & shoulders above most of the scene.

I don't care about the sexism angle or anything like that, like I said he was a dickhead to my friends and his music is objectively terrible.

Serving in the IDF means you're complicit in genocide. Yes, the same is true of Infected Mushroom (used to love 'em, also used to be a chud, their live act sucked and I'll never buy another one of their tunes) and basically the entire Goa scene.

Aww, I used to love Infected Mushroom too, though you're right about the IDF thing. That never crossed my mind when I used to listen to them. I haven't listened to them in years, though, and never did see them live.

One of my favorite artists used to be Vibrasphere and they made psytrance too, though I don't think my favorite stuff of theirs was their psytrance stuff. Like these, for example. What would this be classified as? Progressive trance?

And then there's Mountain Lake, which is probably my favorite track of theirs and one of my favorite tracks period, but it's more downtempo than anything.

Oof, this is apt in a couple of ways.

I always liked this guy who did metal covers of aggressive EDM tunes. Hearing the mid bass from Bangarang played on a guitar is really sort of an "oh, NOW i get it" moment.

What tune, Sabotage?

It's been a long time since I've deliberately attended any festival EDM or really anything other than a D&B show, and even when I did most of the acts I'd go to see weren't the type to do gimmicky poo poo like drop something totally out of genre just because it's a hot tune. Back when I was doing festivals regularly (jfc, almost 10 years ago now) it was a lot of Major Lazer and maybe 'Animals' by Martin Garrix.

There is one D&B DJ I've seen a few times who'd always drop Smells Like Teen Spirit mid-set, which I hated so much that I'd leave for a piss and a smoke every time. I want to say it was DJ Hype, but I'm not sure.

Trampa & Gammer I’ve never heard of, but goddam it doesn’t get more OG than 12th Planet! One of the absolute pioneers of the American brostep sound, that’s a real terrible shame goddam. Never had the pull of bigger acts but he was just in everyone’s sets every show for years.

This is an interesting paper, it is clunky, sometimes incredibly obvious, and sometimes I have no idea what it's saying

Part 1: Proud to still not have a spotify or ever used a streaming service. Not too sure I agree with the usage of music in social contexts / playlist arguemt. We would make burned CDs and tapes with custom playlists for 'after hours' 'going to club' 'going to work' 'workout' and so on. No different than peoples spotify lists. However the author is correct in that capital can directly control and influence these and its an interestingly relationship whereas before it was a solo or a between friends endeavor and now you have the system serving you. Wish the paper focused more on how capital is using all that streaming playlist data. The best part is this :

quote:

Time spent listening to these playlists alone becomes a form of labor in the sense that it translates into value
. Which is a reason why I buy all my music as physical or mp3s.

Part 2: The author tries to justify their fav music genre i guess? Also fascists try to co-opt everything not just your precious music genre

Part 3: Pirate radio stations were not "impossible to trace" because of cordless phones lol. I struggle finding something cohesive in this section or even trying to understand the author. They should've talked about how capital has completely dominated the rave scene, first it took over the music then it bought up all the festivals, introduced non compete clauses, and made illegal anything small scale.
