Bread Liar
pretty cool how a major powerhouse of the government is a bunch of withering, unelected, for-life appointees.

civics / social studies teacher back in middle school commented on how we've had a single constitution since the founding days and how several other countries have rewritten theirs, and how "a slower government is a more stable government". kinda funny to think about now because we have the best of both worlds; a government that can't manage to do gently caress all and one that is hilariously unstable because it's been overrun with a bunch of death cultists at the highest levels

I always thought the better solution for the "Supreme Court" would be to do away with the presidential appointment system altogether and establish a "lottery" system. Federal District Court Judges - one from each District - are chosen for eight month terms, transported to and boarded in DC on the government's dime, they're paid the same amount per month that SCOTUS Justices are now for their time and service, which is a pretty sweet gig if they're living rent-free and can claim a per diem for food and incidentals. If you want a Baker's Dozen, include DC courts in the mix. They'd get a kick out of that.

When their term is up, they return to their prior positions within the District Courts. They're then taken out of the selection pool for two years' time at which point they're eligible for selection again.

I feel one of the worst aspects of our judicial system is that higher-profile Federal Judges feel they need to keep their decisions and ~legacies~ cleaner than their actual case history just in case they ever get that "tap on the shoulder." If you make "sitting on the Supreme Court" a thing that *any* Federal Judge can do - for a limited period - maybe we'll have a better Federal court system since the Judicial "endgame" will disappear.

at this point I'm starting to think that the entire federal governing system needs to be a random lottery of eligible people with six year terms. I'm fairly certain asking for 535 random people from across the US would be more representative and intelligent than the current congress made up mostly 60 year old lawyers, business idiots, and professional pols

don't worry, nevada's there with you

quote:

A few hours after the official state process had ended, a video accompanied a tweet from the Nevada GOP, saying, “History made today in Carson City,” as footage showed Republican electors signing papers on a table. The event was live-streamed on a YouTube channel called “Right Side Broadcasting Network.”

“Our brave electors standing up for what is right and casting their electoral votes for @realDonaldTrump,” the state party’s Twitter account later tweeted. “We believe in fair elections and will continue the fight against voter fraud in the Silver State!”

Documents obtained by the I-Team on Wednesday indicate at least one set of the Republican-written electoral votes for Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were sent to the National Archives.

this is from a month ago but is mentioned in the above story; someone reported a real case of voter fraud:

quote:

In one case, Donald “Kirk” Hartle, who told the I-Team last year that someone had stolen his deceased wife’s ballot and voted, in fact voted himself, officials said.

Rosemarie Hartle, of Las Vegas, died in 2017 at age 52 from breast cancer, Kirk Hartle, told the I-Team after the November election. A ballot for Rosemarie was issued in October 2020 and later received by the county, but Kirk said the ballot never came to his house. The I-Team found even though Rosemarie died in 2017, her name appeared on the active voter list.

I-Team: Las Vegas man, whose case GOP highlighted as voter fraud, to plead guilty to voting twice
The I-Team was first to report that prosecutors were charging Kirk Hartle in October 2021. In a plea agreement, Kirk Hartle pleaded guilty to one charge of voting more than once in the same election, which is a category D felony. Category D felonies carry a maximum prison sentence of four years.

As part of the plea deal, Hartle avoided prison time and was placed on probation. If he stays out of trouble for a year, he will be able to withdraw his plea and instead plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit voting more than once in the same election.

poo poo's already wild. And BNSF has had a history of loving their operators, relying on tech to thin their books, steadily laying folks off for the past several decades while also slacking on rail maintenance. They deserve to be fighting a strike right now.
