a while ago after doing one of those blind "which policies do you most agree with" tests, and ending up closest to second the SNP, and first Sinn Fein. I guess the Gaelic surname has deeper roots than I realised. (hosed off that it doesn't get me an Irish passport, though.) But since I live in Bournemouth, I'm doomed to be represented by a particularly lovely little Tory who was Owen Paterson's acolyte.

Brady can only announce that enough letters have been submitted requesting a VONC; next step is the vote itself, which I suspect Johnson will win (but wouldn't be prepared to put money on it) because he's still too useful to too much of the old guard. At best we've got a couple of days of frantic arm-bending going on behind the scenes.

Yeah, the backbenchers need to make sure he's been slapped with the blame for: - Covid - Brexit - Andy Murray's inevitable early exit from the Australian Open - the collapse of the NHS - the collapse of schools - the collapse of [rolls dice] prisons - the Ashes - inflation caused by Brexit and the unavailability of perishable goods - the trains not running - the trains running, but being more expensive - cuts to the BBC - the Queen dying - Emma Raducanu's semi-final defeat - every river in the UK being filled with raw sewage and the banks being coated with poop tomatoes - a child dying of e-coli after eating a poop tomato - muslims - black people There's probably a point where they think they've ticked enough points on their bingo cards to kick him out, but it doesn't feel like "now" is quite the right time.

I think Johnson could probably have waffled his way out of this one if it hadn't been for the Owen Patterson stuff. That burned through all his political capitol and mightily pissed off the backbenchers he's now relying on. Also gave those those backbenchers their first of many tastes of getting torn to shreds by constituents.

It does seems unlikely that we'd see a full scale military invasion of a European state in 2022 given the current geopolitical context, but then that's exactly what people were saying before WW1 lol. That said Putin is not stupid, he knows Russia could not come out on top of an actual large scale conflict with the West, which at the end of the day wouldn't actually benefit anyone. I'd stake money on this being mostly dick waving, but who the hell knows.

The worst case scenario I would expect is they nibble a bit more out of Ukraine and kill a big chunk of the Ukrainian forces. Putin will want a quick easy and above all popular win, territory that's easy to hold, and not do *quite* enough to warrant a military response from the West. That's obviously a pretty major outcome, but then Russian managed to grab Crimea without facing serious repricusions and might be betting on similar apathy.

I'm intrigued about the idea of counting the letters. We know that only Sir Graham Brady gets them and have to take his word that they've been received. But when they've 'reached' 54, does he then have to prove it? Or does he just say it's at 54, vote time. I get that he'd be stupid to make it up, because if you can't get 54 to trigger then you won't get the vote through, but even that raises another question. If the vote can only be held each 12 months, could he 'declare' early to make sure it fails? Regarding the Hodges tweet, much as I'd love it to be true, Hodge's is full of poo poo normally, so it would be hypocritical to believe this one just because it's what I want. It's a hell of a gamble though, and what does Putin gain? A bit of a ratings boost? He's already untouchable in Russia. He got away with Crimea because of Western apathy, but I'm not sure that would hold once he started to seriously threaten to encroach on NATO's borders. Ukraine serves as a useful buffer state, and in any case would he want to even further tank relations with the EU/USA to take over a territory that would just end up being a huge headache to control?
