Didn't they spend like a year and half a billion dollars filming Old Mark Hamill and digitally de-aging his face and voice until nothing was left but the Luke of Theseus?

Something like that. There was deepfaking involved too.

That was Mandalorian Season 2. Book of Boba Fett then took that and made it worse by never even having Hamill on set or reading lines. It was all pieced together from previous footage and audio.

I also hope that DiMaggio takes the job, they keep it completely quiet, no one has any idea what to expect, and in his first scenes he's doing the "please insert girder" bit as a meta-joke on using previous recordings to generate new dialog through AI.

I'm not a huge fan of the UK office but that show understood that David Brent was a horrible person. The American had that for like one season before pivoting to make their Brent/Scott more of a awkward but loveable doofus. Like they were worried that having an unlike character front and center would confuse the audience.

Greg Daniels talked about this at length, I want to say on Brian baumgartner's (Kevin) podcast.

It was definitely done intentionally after the first episode or two since it was a different show for a different audience. He hoped it would run longer than the original short UK series, and thought having such an unlikeable lead wouldn't work for a longer series. They gave him redeeming and humanizing moments.

The first episode was pretty much a line for line recreation of the UK pilot so that the studio couldn't give any notes.

If you listen to a lot of cast and crew interviews on that podcast, it's clear a lot of them think the show should have ended when carrel left

But even past that? Why is DiMaggio obligated to do it at all? You don't have to take every gig thrown at you. You don't have to return to every gig you've contributed to. He was approached with an offer, he named a price that would compel him to accept the gig, they're in negotiation. It's up to Disney now to decide if they consider his contribution's worth the cost and if not, they pass, the show gets made with a replacement. This is all perfectly fine.

Just wanna say this is a quality post and point. Unfortunately, the Internet and the lovely pedantic toxic nerds that dwell in it won’t be having any of it. It’s DiMaggio or nothing to them :qq:

Personally, a third Futurama revival doesn’t interest me in the slightest. The Comedy Central revival was more terrible than decent, and I’m put off by the thought of a third revival. I most likely won’t watch it unless it gets enough good word of mouth to pique my interest. Let Gilbert Gottfried or Bobcat Goldthwait voice Bender and let’s all be done with it, ffs.

They really need to recast Luke if they’re going to keep using the character. Hamill would likely be fine with it, I don’t think it’s a situation like the Irishman where the cast refuses to accept their age and believes the technology exists to let them keep playing 30 somethings forever.

Also voice acting is a serious skill that requires serious time and effort and dedication. You can argue that DiMaggio's roles are kinda samey and you can instantly pin point him whenever he makes an appearance but Jake sounds way different than Wakka and Bender and Heidegger and so on and so forth. If the guy can leverage his talent to get a better deal from literally the biggest corporation on Earth, more power to him because gently caress you pay me.

It's probably another case a lot like Steve Blum where he has range (he's freakin Guilmon) but almost everyone who hires him just wants the Wolverine voice, sometimes voicing several characters at once with it.

iirc the Simpsons' main voice cast's salaries are all negotiated as a bloc (except Cartwright). Shearer threatening to walk got everybody more money.

these are being done individually, so the game is different.

the idea that they should suck it up and be happy is bizarre to me. why is it not that the execs should suck it up and be happy to pay someone to do an essential role?

Total fuckin' silence.
I feel like I have read one or two critical comments about the Simpsons cast here, usually related to something dumb they've said on Twitter or Julie Kavner sounding like she's about to die. I guess sometimes it seems like a lot more than just one or two comments because people amplify negatives, and regardless I don't think many people were siding with Disney against them anyway, they were just criticising them for other things.

The other issue is that Futurama has died twice. The Simpsons has still been going all this time despite getting noticeably and progressively shitter on all levels, so maybe people occasionally get upset about how the cast aren't rebelling or whatever.

They were definitely moving towards that in season 2 and the Christmas Specials, where it's implied that a fair chunk of season 1 was a hatchet job. Gervais has also said that we were meant to resent Neil Godwin, the guy who's brought in from the Swindon office, who is effortlessly everything that Brent wishes he was.

For some reason Nancy Cartwright watched one of my instagram stories a year ago.

It was just a video of my dogs getting curious about dogs on tv. I don't use hashtags or post for anything more than my circle of friends. No idea how - it was her verified account and everything.

So she at least gets a kick out of doing the bart voice for strangers and also appearing in very random IG stories.

So this morning as I was looking at the list of shows formerly broadcast on Nickelodeon wiki, I learned that Michael Carrington, the first season host of a short-lived two season game show called Think Fast! that I used to watch, co-wrote “Homer’s Triple Bypass” and also did a couple of voices on the show.

The voices he did were short, but memorable.

I never really saw that until I rewatched the UK version again recently.

Yes of course Brent is an awkward dude but in the episode where he takes the Swindon transfers out to lunch he’s basically being a decent person (give or take pushing the wheelchair lady without permission) and the Swindon lot are being unreasonably antagonistic.

You see Neil's mask slip at the very end when he laughs at Finch's joke about Brent's date to the Christmas party.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Aphp8h-Sk4

I did like how the Christmas specials finally give David Brent a happy ending, and shows just how much he's grown as a human being, like a reverse-Flanderising.

He finally stands up to Finchy, telling him to gently caress off. When Dawn chooses Tim over Lee, David Brent has a big grin on his face because he's happy for Tim and Dawn, and moves to the side of the shot, giving them centre stage, instead of trying to Kramer into the shot, as he mugs for the camera like he probably would have in season 1. When the original cast have a group photo, he gets a laugh out of everyone with a spontaneous joke. It honestly feels like a happy ending that is earned, and I prefer to pretend that David Brent movie never happened.
