I disagree with this part, I think the KEY to Gunn is that he gets 'characters'. He establishes who these people are, what they want, relationships they will grow, and an arc they will take. And he's pretty much the only one in Marvel who does this, which is why the GOTG movies feel so different. And why you can be cry with the mass murderer or the CG raccoon.

I mean Guardians literally starts with a boy running away from holding his mother's hand while she dies in the ICU.

Yeah the boy grows up to be a joke machine, and sometimes that is infused by established character but it never, ever negates that established character.

I have an older sister who hates MCU movies with the exception of three: Winter Soldier (she says it’s like Bourne) and the GoTG movies. Gunn is really good at finding those characters you like and giving them real emotional moments that somehow hit hard. I never though Yondu and Peter’s arc would hit me so hard but it still does. That final part of the Ravager Funeral where Rocket looks out. Gut punch. I love that surly trash panda.

On thread topic: never thought I’d start getting into 80s hair metal but here we are. Had something sad happen and the song that kept repeating in my noggin was “there’s no one home, in my house of pain.”

If either of you are big into games you might check out the Guardians video game that was really good and apparently sadly undersold so it's probably easy to get cheap. Very much along the same lines.

After filming GotG3 + season 2 of Peacemaker, James Gunn should make James E Gunn's KAMPUS into a tv-series.

I’ll check it out. She will not as she thinks video games are ridiculous. I prefer to think she’s still mad I owned her so much at Halo, Mario Kart, No Mercy and Mortal Kombat back in the day. It was her Nintendo 64 and Xbox at the start but her bratty kid brother beating her all the time was a line. She did make the food so I guess I could have let her win more. In my defence… she loved Gilmore Girls and later willingly watched Big Bang Theory. Terrible big sis. Terrible.

Thanks for the recc.

Seeing him play Satan in those parody Christian videos in Super, I am extremely down for this.

1) It's a uniform, and
2) it's new, he needs to stretch it out.

He had a bit part in Super and just had stubble, still looked weird.

IIRC they let a movie trailer company edit the whole thing which is why it's completely disjointed and the songs are terribly done.

IIRC it was shot as a dark and miserable Snyder copy, and then BvS bombed... Then they released the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer which was very well received, but wasn't representative of the film at all, so the decision was made to re-cut the film to be more like the trailer.

He stole a bunch of them off set by walking off set still wearing them and not bringing them back. He doesn't need to contact the studio in order to get the costume, which makes it easy for him to just show up in costume.

After watching Peacemaker I went back to watch Superstore and it took me way too long to realize he was the guy that played Isaac in that show.

Also apparently he's been in a lot of good/funny stuff over the years, looking at his IMDB now.

Chris Pratt is the bad Chris but his reaction to Yondu’s death is one of the most raw, realistic expressions of anguish I’ve ever seen. Apparently Pratt’s own father had died recently and he was using it as an outlet.

The massively positive responses to Deadpool and Guardians 1 also impacted the production, they had a bunch of reshoots to add jokes [the whole bar scene iirc].

Don't be scared
After GotG, Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, I'd be interested to see what happens when Gunn gets access to a property where people have already developed a sense of fandom. He absolutely gets the spirit of comics and why we read them (mentioned many times in this thread), but Harley Quinn is the only popular character he's handled so far, so he's been able to really change anything and do anything he wanted with characters with amazing effect.

If Gunn is moving away from GotG, he would be my #1 choice to take on an X-Men reboot in the MCU.

On the other hand, I think the world of DC and its willingness to embrace more mature themes and darkness probably suits Gunn better and gives him a little more creative freedom with anything not named Batman.

Deadpool is as much a creation of Ryan Reynolds (cinematically) as anyone's at this point. Gunn could and would make a great Deadpool, but that would require a lot of cooperation between the two and without a clear leader could be rudderless.
