I always like doing that quest. It's one of the very few quests that stands alone in the game and doesn't really tie back into the main conflict of the Mojave, but it's very funny and has a lot if great characters. Glory to Antler.

It's probably my second least favorite quest after the stupid brotherhood fetch quest. Red Lucy's quest is also bad but dinner bell owns.

IIRC Come Fly With Me is the first quest Obsidian designed in New Vegas, and it shows.

Each individual portion of the quest is good: picking off ghouls as you approach the building; stealth or combat as options for the Nightkin; multiple options to complete the fetch portions. But but altogether it's just a little too long and tedius.

You can tell the team were learning the ropes of level design - REPCONN areas are overly large and simultaneously cluttered + empty (you also get this feeling in some of the casino, Westside, even Nellis AFB). It clicks with the Nightkin stealth approach but distends every other aspect of the quest.

yeah this is why i specified the writing, the repconn offices felt like a maze that i was scrounging for tiny bits and pieces of loot since i was immediately told everywhere really important to go in the quest itself.

So on a semi-related question, when’s the best time to do the DLC in terms of storytelling? My understanding is that they’re fairly tightly linked to some stuff in the base game, and that all four should be played in the order of release to get the whole story. The ties I know I have to look at in the base game are Veronica’s companion quest (for backstory on Father Elijah in Dead Money), Wolfhorn Ranch (apparently this is Ulysses’ home) and ED-E’s companion quest (since she/he/it ties into Lonesome Road.) So my thinking is to do all four after getting to the strip and picking up Veronica for interacting with the Brotherhood, also being level 15 or so?

Completing Come Fly With Me is the farthest I’ve ever been, this is just bits and pieces I know from watching videos and seeing discussions here and there.

2house2fly

You did a super job wrapping things up! And I'm not just saying that because I have to!
Wolfhorn Ranch really isn't relevant to anything, it was going to be where you met originally-planned Legion companion Ulysses but there's no trace of him after he was cut.

There's a few things to bear in mind with the DLC, one of which is that they scale enemies according to your level, which can make combat in Old World Blues particularly a real slog. I recommend the Animal Friend perk for that and Honest Hearts to lower the frequency of combat a little. Also make a manual save before heading in to each one, as some of them are a little divisive and you can't return to the Mojave until you're done with the main quest, except for Lonesome Road.

Release order is best, though they'll work well enough in any order. Some specifics:

Dead Money: spend some time with Veronica and interact with the Brotherhood first. If you don't enjoy resource scarcity you might want to consider the Fortune Finder and Scrounger perks, as well as Light Step. Taking Rad Child and getting heavily irradiated before going into the DLC is also a bit of a pro strat but by no means necessary.

Honest Hearts: start after talking with Caesar (you get the chance to do this after confronting Benny)

Old World Blues: doesn't tie into anything specific in the Mojave so can be done any time

Lonesome Road: do this at the end of the game. There is a late-game quest involving an assassination attempt, do that quest and then do this. You can also go back and forth throughout the game if you feel like it, but it's intended for pretty high-level and heavily armed characters

I liked dipping into LR just deep enough to get the first upgrade for ED-E and some silly weapons and armor, but that might gently caress up the story of it a little bit if the game checks your 'alignment' too early, and it's not a beginner strategy anyway given the sentry bots.

Oh, for the best time in Lonesome Road install the "True Faction Allegiance" mod. There's differences in dialogue depending on which faction you sided with, but the way it detects your faction is janky. The mod fixes things up so you won't be called an NCR lover if you shot every NCR soldier on sight

Gaius Marius

I'd say dead money after Christine and the Brotherhoods quests + the Helios One quest

Honest Hearts after meeting Caeser, but this is the most disconnected of the dlc's. I've seen some people doing it just before hitting the strip, justifying that they're singing on to get enough caps to get into the strip.

OWB after meeting House at least.

Lonesome Road I think is best done after you've beaten the game. It serves as a sort of reflection on your choices and let's you think back and reckon with the positives and negatives you've brought to the wasteland.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed shitposting.
One thing to keep in mind, at higher levels the enemies are serious bullet sponges and if you use guns ammo can get scarce. Energy weapons and melee it's still annoying, but you won't run out of ammo.

Our God..... is an awesome God
OWB doesn't tie into the main story so much but it does tie into the other DLC, particularly if you put in the effort to find everything (if you just do the main quest you won't find out much). But if you're doing the DLC in release order you're already fine there.

And yeah, OWB can be very rough combat wise at high levels - you have limited supplies but will fight a lot of high armor, high damage enemies who scale to your level. I actually consider it to be the challenge run segment when I replay New Vegas - when you know what you're doing the base game/other DLCs can be pretty easy, but doing OWB at high level lets me test my skills.

It was the one area where I relented in my no-quick save naked run (I enter the dlc with nothing on me, and only save at a bed). A couple frustrating hours in, I eased up on the quick saving rule till I left the DLC. Surprisingly, even Dead Money wasn't as bad.

You know you didn't have to go post that, right?
But it's fine, I guess...

You just keep being you!

Release order, before you confront Benny/enter the Strip. Honest Hearts at level ten.

First off, it allows you to nuke both NCR and Legion for that extra, tasty content, with the eventual reset of relations with the NCR and the Legion after confronting Benny and speaking to House, and secondly it lets you know the background to the over-arching conflict and so you know how you wish to alter the fate of New Vegas.

I looked at how the DLCs scale with player level recently, see below. If you're worried about sponginess, going into OWB around level 25-30 is a good idea because there are some bugs in its scaling. Using the linked mod is a good idea.

v1ld posted:

Finished HH at level 15 and was wondering when to enter the other DLCs.

DM scales at levels 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55. Ghost People get bumps in HP at those levels.

OWB is supposed to scale at 20, 30, 40, 50. But the vanilla enemy lists have the enemies scaled for 20-30 even at 1-20, so it's effectively scaling at 30, 40, 50 instead. There's a mod that fixes this: OWB Level Scaling Fix. Roboscorpions for eg have DT 15 at level 1 and level 30, which would explain the sponginess complaints.

I'm going to do DM at 20 or soon after and OWB right after, which should be close to 25. Figure starting 5 levels below the next bump is a good way to run it.

E: Just checked: YUP adds new scaling points for Giant RoboScorpions at 1 and 10. I.e., it fixes level 1 scaling and adds a new scaling level at 10. But it does this for only Giant RoboScorps, not the rest of the enemies.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Went to Helios One and met Ignacio, the Followers of the Apocalypse seem like pretty cool folks. This made the second log for ED-E pop so I had to sprint across the Mojave to enter the Old Mormon Fort before anything happened. Then when the Brotherhood called, the Follower lady didn't interject. Is that normal? Will she pipe up when I go to Repconn HQ to try and grab the logs?

e: fixed things with Boone, I put a space in the variable name because the kerning looked off on the fallout wiki.

Yep, as soon as I grabbed the tape off the brotherhood person in Repconn HQ she said hi. And now ED-E has a new laser! I do miss the old skin with the license plate though, I thought that was cute.

New question: how good are the non-SPECIAL implants? I started with 7 so I can get 7, and I got Luck and Intelligence already after getting tossed out of the Atomic Wrangler. There's a note on the wiki that the health regen one is possibly good for Dead Money, what about the duraplating one? I could skip Charisma obviously, and maybe skip Endurance itself, since that's already at 7. A bit worried about longtime cap income though, my mods are effectively making selling all the guns I come across pretty low-income, so I might be out of big sources after casinos, snowglobes, and eventually gold bars.

e: snowglobes give 2k not 1k like I thought and casinos are a LOT so I'm probably okay unless some quest is a giant cap sink somewhere.

The monocyte one is 1hp/10s recovery, which isn't really fantastic outside of helping you top off small HP losses, though it can be more useful in hardcore mode. The dermal implant is a straight +4 DT.

Personally I use the Cybernetics mod that spun off from Project Nevada. Adds in a bunch more implants that you can find or buy and removes the END limit, replacing it instead with a slot system (2x head/chest and 1 in each arm and limb) that you can double with different perks. You can also swap out implants at many doctors.

Yeah the Nevada cybernetics stuff is one of the only parts of it I really missed as modding left PN behind. Was super stoked to find out it had been spun off into it's own thing.

Famine - A Loot Rarity Mod
Configurable loot scarcity mod. Personally, I quite like mods that make life in the Mojave a little harder. Maybe pair it with:

Ammo Boxes - An Economy Fix
Merchants only sell boxes of ammo, and single rounds are otherwise valueless to create a much harder economy.

Ed E Backpack Addon

I mean, what else is there to say? (cosmetic only)

Handcraft
Eliminates the need for a crafting bench for simpler items. I haven't checked what falls into that category, though.

Difficulty Dependent Pete
"easy pete's name changes depending on your chosen difficulty" lol

SawyerBatty
JSawyer ported to TTW (with Sawyer's permission). Has some changes, most notably undoes the stricter carry weight. This is made by one of the TTW leads, who's also responsible for a bunch of poo poo in regular NV modding.

ROOG
Survival/scarcity overhaul from the same author as above. TTW doesn't play well with a lot of NV mods, so this might be your best bet for that kind of experience. Sounds pretty tough, and is not customizable.

Also quite a few updates to Stewie's. Some that stood out to me
  • Add: NPCs Drop Live Grenades
  • Add: Hide Crosshair In 3rd Person
  • Enhance: Using Keys Rewards XP
  • Enhance: Improved Hacking - add option to mark guesses as duds
  • Enhance: Sit To Wait - option to show current time when pressing the wait key while standing
  • Add: More Precise Rad Meter (I used a standalone mod for this before)

Also it seems a bajillion new weapon animations.
