That's pretty much what it panned out to be. The problem was that initially, the story of it broke on a reddit that was overwhelmingly dedicated to being insane stalkers and weirdos about the grumps in general, basically game grumps kiwifarms, so a whole lot of them raced to push things out as patchworked together maliciously as possible. Dan's gross because he was using his role as a big, loved creator to also get with fans, but none of them were underage or pressed or anything, he was just yeah, a standard kind of creep abusing his place of power for hookups with fans and ghosting them after. Obviously "They were all of age" isn't a defense of him or his actions, but more condemnation for the freaks that were trying to whip up bullshit about the whole thing because they're still mad that Jon isn't on the show and saying slurs anymore.

Somebody commented at the time since a lot of what people were yelling at Lindsay was "LISTEN TO VOICES" they pointed out that some of the represented folks were either agreeing with her or saying "Yeah, I could see that" and asked the question 'so which ones do you listen to?'

I think it's less people actively wanting to white knight (although that is certainly an element) and more that there's a lot of messaging about "Hey, if you're privileged, help people who aren't, and step up to other privileged people when they pull poo poo." People really do want to help, they're just not taking a step back and analyzing whether this is, indeed, a fight that they need to fight. Doesn't help that right now there's a whole lot of injustice that they can't directly affect, so the brain is just constantly screaming that everything is bad, and then here comes a convenient avatar of everything bad that they CAN fight, so that avatar gets it full blast. I tend to assume that a lot of these people also have been on the receiving end of similar harassment, and instead of coming to the conclusion of "Wow, this loving sucks, don't wanna do that," they go, "Ah, I see, this is how the world works." I can understand the bitterness, but I have no idea how you think you're gonna drop a 1 hour+ video about a pretty obscure old game and have it be an obvious runaway success. I suppose when 8 hours of "and in this episode of a Disney channel sitcop, this happens" somehow does millions you're right to think your examination of a fun weird game should do better, but it's Youtube. The only logic here is the inscrutable one of the machines.

It looks like it's performing a bit sluggishly even relative to her other video essays, so I can't say I blame her for being a bit frustrated. Speaking as a content creator, it can be really frustrating to spend a lot of time and effort on something that's fairly important to you only for it to underperform. I don't think her expectation was for the video to be a runaway mega-hit, just for its performance improves relative to previous content - At least that's what I think most people who have been posting some form of content to the internet hope for from a new piece. It's a good video, though I wish it had touched on Venineth since it's a "roll marble through tricky course" game I've been playing that one a lot lately and there's...stuff to discuss about it.
