It's difficult and very timing-based but I don't think it's rear end. Especially given the limitations of the unique little map they've created.

That being said I haven't gotten that far. But I think it's cool.

I’m just too old for dick-kicking games. Like I wanna play a game, have fun, be moderatelyish challenged and yeah. So many games are going for the Uber hard ‘souls-like’ stuff and I’m over here like ‘but no?

Not yucking anyone’s yum, but oy I was wish games would embrace a multitude of difficulty sliders that didn’t punish you if you use them to make the game easier. I don’t mind challenging, but I don’t want a game that’s out to kill me. Like an adversarial DM or some poo poo. I dunno.

My opinion on Tunic is the art style and cozy vibe the manual concept* creates is brilliant but its writing a check its gameplay isn't just not cashing, its tearing it up and lighting it on fire.

Combat is incredibly punishing of mistakes (for example if you run out of stamina and get hit enjoy taking 150% damage) and enemies are designed often to do extremely rude things like dash away from you and then shoot at range, and some can shoot at you through impassable terrain they can cross at will. Enemy mixtures also are high lethality and upgrades are very very necessary and often well hidden. Your health, also, is quite limited, expected to lose at least 1/4th your health everytime you're hit with bosses and tough foes able to dish out more.

What kind of pushes it over the edge is that save points are fairly infrequent, especially as the game progresses, so death is a huge time loss and death can happen incredibly quickly. So you have very slow combat that is extremely risky with an estus health system and very long intervals between check points.

Theres no way I'd recommend playing this without infinite health and stamina cheats unless you're very comfortable with an incredibly punishing experience.

*Seriously, this is just absolutely brilliant. Just inventive as hell and so much effort and charm went into this and its basically perfect. Shame the game its attached to.

Does it have very much input buffering + no animation canceling? I feel like that’s the combo I struggle with the most with combat.

Pretty much. I love the game and discovered the parry early on, but I have parried a laser once. I still took damage because the animation didn't have iframes after reflecting the initial laser

Yeah that's it for me, I don't hate that it exists, it's just sounding like it's very much not for me compared to what I thought from its initial look.

I think it would be better if they had an option to, like, double or triple both instead of making them infinite. Being invulnerable is pretty boring it really gets old fast. And the rest of the game is okay but combat is a huge part of it.

I was just gonna say something like that, I've been very appreciative of games having granular difficulty accessibility options lately. Tuning up defense or damage a bit is way more fun for me than just going god mode.

The best implementation I've seen is Hades god mode where the more you die, the less damage you take up to...50% less?

Pretty grand idea imo.

The most recent thing that is like it I would say is Death's Door, although I bounced off of Death's Door and am fully engrossed with Tunic. I think the charm of the game and how you discover it's mechanics helps carry it. It's on gamepass at the least so its a worth a shot if you have that

I'm currently prioritizing it over Elden Ring, and I've been itching for an open world exploration game.

There's also Hob. Which is Zelda if you are a boy with a robot arm/friend. But out of the three I've played Death's Door the most. Tunic is challenging as soon as you encounter the shooter monsters which (without a shield? I haven't found one yet) will grind away at you if you aren't precise and careful with them.

With Wales it really comes down to who is working with them. some of good gate's other games aren't so good (the complex, night book). but late shift by ctrlmovie was alright. and when they team up with d'avekki it's usually fun (doctor dekker, shapeshifting detective)

d'avekki's next game looks interesting because it's mixing fmv with 3D (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1727270/Murderous_Muses/?curator_clanid=33495410) and the 3D is kind of crude in the same way Cyan games were, only in realtime. also you solve a murder by looking at paintings

Survival, basebuilding, exploration

You are essentially a convict sentenced to terraform a planetoid but your ship crashes so you have to take short jaunts out to find crafting recipes and minerals to build all the stuff.
Its a decent little game, though not hard if you are efficient, you can only get food from scavenged crates in broken ship pieces until you terraform enough to get the recipe to build an indoor grow item.
No danger besides air and water.

Its kinda cool watching your atmosphere and land change as you progress though.
