There is a project our leadership, of both parties, are in on right now to dismantle the administrative state and return us to the 1900 status quo. A part of that project is to delegitimize all aspects of the federal state.

That we've got Republican senators openly saying that the federal government shouldn't be involved in stuff like legalizing interracial marriage is no accident.

I think it's probably impossible to assign a single motive to the US' COVID response. There's a lot of actors involved, and many of them are themselves conflicted and have had their motives change at various points.
Deliberate malice born of eugenic desires, inaction born out of a desire to prop up the US' house of cards and hide how decrepit and impotent our federal government has become, inaction born out of a desire to serve capital, genuine idiocy and a failure to grasp how bad things genuinely are, and more are all factors. But like, eh, personally I don't think any one reason can be ascribed to the entirety of the people involved with the failure.

Like the people chugging horse paste and poo poo; they're not acting out of eugenic desire; they're clearly just profoundly stupid. And yeah, there's a lot that the US government is doing wrong (literally everything it is able to) but even with everything the US government is doing wrong, if the majority of Americans wore masks - even surgical ones (although not so much anymore) - consistently then the situation would be quite different from what it is.

The government may be forcing people to go to work, but only very recently did it de facto ban workers from wearing masks, and at no point has it been able to mandate people go to Applebees, inasmuch as it wanted.

Idiocy and evil alike are necessary factors for how and why we are where we are.

malicious neglect, especially for all marginalized groups, is the default setting of capitalism. the alleged socialists who insist the ruling class is straightforwardly stupid or naive have to explain why they expected something other than malicious neglect in the first place (answer: they're liberals).

Aggressive retrenchment of social services goes hand in hand with "culling the weak" so to speak, you don't need anyone in charge with explicitly eugenic motives now -- it's been baked into all the policymaking priors already.

Malicious neglect I don't think is sufficient for what we are seeing and have seen. Like at certain points it has to be either deliberate murderous animus and/or complete idiocy. Stuff like deliberately revoking masking mandates after having already implemented them, or telling people early on NOT to wear masks - malicious negligence is not a sufficient explanation. Either someone extremely stupid was giving terrible advice they believed to be worthwhile - because they are an idiot, or else someone was deliberately and actively trying to cause people to die.

The answer was always it costs too much or undermined what they consider business confidence, and just the general FYGM bent of the ruling class

You might say the costs of not doing pandemic mitigation are higher in aggregate but it's also very much about who gets to eat the costs and bear the risks of failure and the people in charge didn't want to for obvious reasons. "Societal cost" isn't a legible or actionable "thing" to the FYGMers in charge too

I do believe that the biden admin has very deliberately calculated that covid must be over in the minds of the people in order for them to stand a chance at midterms. The changing cdc guidelines, removal of funds for testing etc, and messaging are not the result of stupidity imo. Because they are obsessed with optics, it's more important to them to convey that covid is over but not to actually do the things that would make it be really over, or at the very least under control.

this honestly looks awesome because it's a blank canvas. i used to love the cloth masks back before i came back to the forums because i could either decorate them or use fabric that i love for the front panels, coordinate colors and all that.

Poor kiddo :( I hope it's indeed accurate. I can't imagine what it's like for parents going through all this. I worry myself sick about my niece and nephew as it is.

I'm gonna echo lifting weights. I'm only 32 but my family has just the worst bone and joint health and some fun cardiac issues to boot. My pain and mobility are much improved with even light strength training and daily walks.
