Yeah, season two at least flows logically, if albeit a bit slowly.

To me, and I say this in my most Tim Robinson on a Ghost Tour voice, and I do not mean this as a troll, or to ruin anyone's thread, or to make a mod mad: S1 was just as 'logical' as S2, but actually less rudder-less.

At least in S1 I can buy the need to do a lot of work to explain who the double-Tal-Shiar are or lay the groundwork for their anti-robot crusade/monster-outside-the-galaxy stuff, or even try to explain all the weird 'federation in decline' worldbuilding. All of that sucked, but it needed some time to actually demonstrate to the audience.

I don't think I can make that claim on S2. Did anyone need a lot to understand that earth in 2024 sucks? Did we need +50 minutes to get across the idea that the present was changed and now the world is evil? Like- stripped down to bare-bones plot, if you went straight from 'Stargazer explodes' to 'Picard meets not-Laris in 2024', what needs to be accounted for?
  • Q (vaguely) setting up the premise for Picard
  • Picard then relaying that premise to the rest of the cast
  • A (different) borg queen, and some interactions between her and Jurati that seem to be leading somewhere
  • Rios meeting a doctor, who we'll probably see later for some reason

I'm glad everyone liked seeing Gul Dukat's skull, and really enjoyed Rios being epic-gritty on an ICE agent, but even all that as flavor is a pretty paltry offering for 3 episodes. I'd suggest more paltry than Romulan samurai or Hugh working as a borg-deprogrammer.

She'll also go back in time to like a 2040 that's probably objectively better than real-world 2040 and the message will be we all just need to trust science a little to bring us together

At least one cast member will be murdered on set by someone who's a member of a cult that worships Dave Portnoy. The government will throw a parade for them.

Cowardice doesn't seem like the right word. I think they just have too many cast members and too few things for them to do. Jurati needs to be alone with the queen for her plot to work and Rios needs to be alone for his plot to work and Elnor wouldn't really add anything following Raffia & Seven around. You gotta make some cuts somewhere.

He's not the worst part of the show, he's just on a completely different TV show than literally the entire rest of the cast and only intersects with them at random, plot-mandated intervals. His stuff is fine, it just seems lacking in comparison to the wacky bullshit Rios, Seven, Raffi and Agnes are getting up to without adult supervision because they're doing poo poo like loving the cops up and hitting on hot back alley doctors and doing weird kinky mind sex with the Borg Queen.

1) If you're going to have Seven show up at a police station and talk with the desk officer, have her say "I'll be back". I don't care if she actually is. Just let Jeri Ryan have that moment. gently caress off, writers.

2) I am getting more and more annoyed by the choice to have the skulls of Dukat, Martok and (hinted at) Zek, characters Picard never met. It should have been Duras and Bok. Also Hugh. And...if you really wanted to piss off timeline people, Sela

I think the ironic part is that a show called Picard doesn't seem to want to be about him very often. He's the best part of the show when it does actually want to be about Jean-Luc Picard. This happened in the first episodes of both seasons before they start pivoting more and more to everybody else.

Really, IMO, one of the worst choices was calling the show "Picard." It puts too many expectations on him to be the very center of the show rather than part of a new ensemble.

Big Mean Jerk

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
I’m not really even sure what to say about this episode

- The shuttle Renee and Picard talk about is from the Enterprise intro montage
- Spiner always was more interesting when playing a villain
- The Renee Picard stuff is clearly not done yet, Rios mentions they still need to keep her safe and presumably having a comforting old man she just met run down in front of her has shaken her up again
- I know they had to contrive a reason to have Spiner on the show again, but I kinda wish they hadn’t since this subplot with his daughter is almost certainly going to muddle the overall plot and not be resolved satisfactorily. It’s just too much to handle when you’ve already got the Q and time travel stuff going on.
- The Head Borg Queen stuff was alright until it suddenly very much wasn’t.
- Rios being enamored with real cigars and matches was great

God, this one hurts so much.

There really isn't enough plot left in this season to sustain 4 more episodes. I'm now officially torn between "Just skip this poo poo and give me Season 3 already" and "Oh god, how are they going to screw up Season 3 now?"

At least when Season 1 was wildly careening out of control at this point in its run, I never felt like it was overstaying its welcome because I was waiting to see what insane direction they went next as they made poo poo up on the fly. It was really fun to see what new rabbit the show would pull out of its hat, and whether that rabbit would bite the magician, or poo poo all over the stage, or just turn out to be a dead rabbit because it somehow asphyxiated inside the hat. This time around, we have a clear finish line we're heading towards, one that we've known about since the end of episode 1, so every little delay and baby step taken towards that endgame is just frustrating as hell.

E: Ah, I found the root of the problem

https://twitter.com/TerryMatalas/status/1511765640197017601

Matalas delegated the back half of Season 2 to Akiva Goldsman while he focused all his energy on writing Season 3. So yeah, the back half of this season's probably gonna be a total write off, but hey, at least Season 3 might be good most of the way through...?

I laughed...

...when Jurati began singing a period-appropriate song.
...when the band knew what song was being sung and decided to play along.
...when the venue organizers decided an impromptu song in the middle of a power outage was worth putting a spotlight on.
...when they brought Elnor's actor in for another 1 second shot with no lines. I wonder if his availability was poo poo or this was actually planned. *looks up IMDB* Wow they planned this.
...when Picard pushed Picard out of the way of the car. An expertly trained 20-something astronaut apparently has worse senses and reflexes than an 80-something grandpa.
...when Rafi was worried about timeline shenanigans and being safe... after two episodes of being reckless and careless.
...when not-Laris knew what a Mind Meld was. Call me out for being a terrible television show watcher but I don't recall her ever divulging knowledge of what, exactly, is outside of Earth, let alone knowledge of taboo Vulcan practices.
...when Kore knew how to use the Internet and type real fast but, for some reason, never Googled her own incredibly important father.
...when we saw the best photoshops Paramount could pay for.

...when the news got a photograph of Soong at an exclusive meeting where no photographers were present.
...when Kore's actress realized she had to, for the third time in two seasons, play a character questioning her own existence.

This show's hilarious.

When Picard started getting textedby Q and Tallinn used her phone to peek at the discussion, she muttered something and the closed captions confirmed it as "speaks Romulan". This was not long after Jean-Luc made the comment about how she can't be related to Laris because Laris was Romulan.
