The wall had two primary functions: 1: being an easy rallying point for stupid racists to flock to come election time. It’s a simple, clear, physical talking point that’s easy to wrap your head around even if you’re so clueless that you think Trump is “fighting for you”. 2: I’m guessing here, but knowing how literally any other big project is handled by republicans, presumably the building and assembling of the wall greased the gears for a lot of rich donors and their families.
