Before content delivery was digital and controllable enough to only send each set box the channels it had access to they used to use physical in-line signal filters to scramble premium channels. I had a friend who figured this out and would just bust into the cable box and remove the filters to get HBO.

It was so widespread that when one of the creators of the channel moved to a new house and were getting cable hooked up, the cable guy offered to do the mod so they could get the channel for free.
