This baseball rules site explains a bunch of possible situations which seem to boil down to if a fielder can make a play in fair territory, it’s an automatic out. It was a routine ground ball that hit Rizzo with a fielder ready to scoop it, so it’s an out even if it was unintentional. On the other hand for example, it shoots past a diving shortstop and hits a runner behind him, it’s a live ball because the fielder tried and failed to make the play.
