I think AB:AI needs to collectively take a trip down to Piaggio's Canadian Ape dealer in Calgary. https://apecanada.com/ Yes, of all of the places to set up your national HQ, Piaggio chose Calgary, Alberta.

It was tempting to put this in the other thread but I dunno, the dimensions kinda work. To me it seems to be a Jaguar XK8/R shell with the F Type rear lights, classic E type exhausts and I don't even know what the front end is because that's shorter than the original XK. I kinda dig it, seems really well done too. https://twitter.com/Goater102/status/1514315202472423427?s=20&t=ceeUVCORvr1cC76xAnTTQQ

I'm not a fan of lights that don't at least start at the same sort of height as the larger horizontal surfaces like bonnets and boots they sit next to so yeah. I actually edited that out of the initial post believe it or not Not sure how you'd manage it with those lights though, where they are is probably the only spot they'd fit because that car's booty is curvy as.

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:It's so maddening the SD1 was pure 70's/80's British car industry. That car was a excellent design for it's time and sounded great with the V8, bought down by comically awful build quality and absolutely crippling cost cutting garbage. A lot of Britsh cars of the time were utter crap from breakfast to rear end in a top hat but the SD1 in actual competent hands would have been just amazing. I've owned two, and my take away was the SD1 was a stellar design hampered by the unholy trilogy of: Mechanical components selected under BL austerity measures - A live axle rear end that led to hilarious levels of body roll, a Borg-Warner automatic transmission with ratios that were very poorly matched to the V8 and a manual gearbox option that couldn't handle the torque; Electrical components supplied by British industry - Lucas fuel injection, connectors, switchgear, and wiring harnesses, and Smiths instruments; And then finally it was all loosely screwed together with self-tappers and minimal rust proofing by a bunch of people who wanted to do anything but build cars. A fully sorted SD1 (especially the series 2 Vitesse model) is a thing of utter beauty, but getting it sorted requires levels of commitment that even hardened masochists struggle to muster... Yet I'd probably buy another one tomorrow if I could. I've often dreamed about what the SD1 would have been like had it been made by Ford, but they wouldn't have ever taken the risk of launching something so advanced. I always heard the S2's were better built than people give them credit for, but yeah, I'm under no illusions. NZ assembled a bunch here, and while we may be a bit backwards, I'm certain workers in Nelson were less miserable than those standing around a brazier in the Midlands, so maybe there's some hope? I have a friend who runs the best pom vehicle shop with his father (they did a bunch of camel trophy stuff for example) and when I mentioned my desire for a v8 rover his first reaction was to laugh in my face before saying "yeah no worries, I've got a few spare v8s you can have for beer money WHEN they blow up spectacularly". Apparently his disco shat the bed so badly the cylinder lining dropped into the path of the crankshaft, said disco now has a 6.0 ls.

i highly doubt that car is going to see the speeds where a wing like that is going to provide any measurable downforce either as 2d or 3d so it literally is just for style, aka like half the poo poo done to drift cars

It might be there for show but by the location in the airflow being what it is, the only way it cant work is by turning it back to front or have a sizable negative angle of attack. The wing looks like it doesn't mount to the rear beaver but goes to the most likely the bumper mounts, so it might be for show but it 100% works from low speeds and will be generating enough downforce at highway speeds that I would have gone for a bumper mounting to stop the rear beaver from bending CAT INTERCEPTOR fucked around with this message at 10:28 on Apr 19, 2022 |

Then it's about how light your car is. 100lbs on a 1800lb crx is significant. But yeah, to get more downforce than the weight of the wing/mounts takes clean air, good airfoil, long chord, steep angle of attack, and no one does that poo poo but track rats trying to shave tenth to bring home those plastic spark plug trophies no lube so what fucked around with this message at 02:38 on Apr 20, 2022 |

A 1.5% gurney flap will easily increase the amount of downforce by 25-30% even without anything close to a optimal wing design or location. With a optimal set up then you are not talking tenths gained, that's where you get into seconds per lap with aero gains. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurney_flap Also this is a LMAO quote:Unser realized the value of this breakthrough immediately and wanted to conceal it from the competition, including his brother Al. Not wanting to call attention to the devices, Gurney left them out in the open.[12] To conceal his true intent, Gurney deceived inquisitive competitors by telling them the blunted trailing edge was intended to prevent injury and damage when pushing the car by hand. Some copied the design and some of them even attempted to improve upon it by pointing the flap downward, which actually hurt performance.[13]

I was trying to highlight that even at autocross speeds, mindful aero can give a competitive advantage. I stumbled upon this dudes website a while ago. He does a bunch of home-brew tests & simulations. I like how he used ride height sensors he ripped off a luxury SUV to measure down force.
