my only travel plans for the next few years are to go down to texas for the total solar eclipse a couple of years from now. i've got a cousin who lives pretty near the path. i expect we'll still have covid waves ripping through so i'll probably drive down there.

Midjack posted:i've been to defcon for 15 years in a row (skipped the last two for obvious reasons) as well as spent a month doing poo poo in the desert to the north but based in the city about 20 years ago. the secret to sanity there is to get the gently caress off the strip asap. forget the restaurants, forget the shows, gently caress the dumb tourist stuff, just get away from the money filters entirely and go to some other part of the town. its chinatown has some thoroughly decent food and while you can never fully escape gaming and casinos you can definitely minimize the impact.

been to vegas twice wasn't really a fan either time, mainly because it felt like a more expensive and more fake version of just going out here and with more assholes who believe "what happens in vegas stays in vegas" the grand canyon and hoover dam are excellent though

have you guys ever been to the cheap lovely tourist traps they have in the south like around Myrtle Beach or the Smokey Mountains? the strip reminded me of that on a speedball

# ? May 3, 2022 15:51 |

oh yeah we used to go to the outer banks, myrtle beach, south carolina once? all of that. Just like, places too touristy to have a real life, but not cool or wild enough to take vacation pics at i do have a good memory of pops actually putting our Isuzu Trooper in 4wd and taking us down some beaches (where it was allowed)

i haven't actually been to outer banks or myrtle beach, but i've been to ocean city and i'll take that 10 times out of 10 over vegas. at least in ocean city it doesn't take 10 minutes for you to get from your hotel room to fresh air and natural light

on the final day of paxlovid, i can definitely say this stuff's worse than what i had for actual covid symptoms. my wife rapid tested positive this morning after repeated negative rapid tests AND a negative PCR test taken friday. (she's fine. slightly congested, but that's it)

another day of feeling like poo poo, another sick day wasted on actually being sick when instead I could have used it for doing something fun or a "gently caress this poo poo" mental health day. Some symptoms on friday, fever on sunday, negative home NAAT test on monday morning, might do another test tonight or tomorrow morning just for shits. Aside from mild fever/aches/fatigue it's mostly sinus congestion and now some coughing, which made me think it wasn't COVID, but maybe sinus congestion from COVID is more common now?

i assume it has the same problems as antibiotics and selection pressures will lead to resistant variants so "for now" is probably the right answer

uses magic to prevent sars-cov-2 replication, i think? gives your immune system a chance to give the existing infection under control.

it’s not quite so bad with viruses because when selective pressure is removed they mutate back to wild type pretty quickly
