Edit:

I just reached the post where someone found boxed copies of Battle Rush for 100 yen because a toy store went out of business. Battle Rush is the ultimate :retrogames: title around the Famicom, a Datach game that goes for around $5000.

I think he meant 39900 yen, he said he got 100 yen change from four Fukuzawa Yukichis. Still an order of magnitude less but Mandarake had to get their cut!

I think the US is dumb for not using Celsius
I'm guessing it works on the basis that cart based systems often work by connecting directly to the CPU bus. So you just listen to the bus and wait for screen data and then scrape that to build your own frame buffer.

Is there a decent resource of OG Xbox softmodding? I think I have all the supplies I need, but do I really need Splinter Cell? Don't want to do anything too crazy with it, but would be nice to future-proof it a bit.

Found my Xbox in storage and thankfully the clock cap hadn't leaked much, after thorough vinegar & alcohol it booted right up (into JSRF...which I had apparently left in the drive for 12 years).

I did a new softmod a couple years ago and just followed this video exactly as described. Worked just fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW6QsGXTrFQ

There are 3-4 games you can possibly use so it doesn’t have to be Splinter Cell but you can’t do it without at least one of the exploitable games because you use a modded save file to get started and obviously need whichever game to load it that first time.

A RGB add on for the AV Famicom?! Yes Please

I assume it wouldn't work on the others (minus the rare multiout NES toploader) based on RF/RCA noise but we shall see

This sounds like really lewd degenerate activity. I think I get the basic idea though. Just kinda surprised that data can be sent/received via the cartridge port.

Island Nation posted:

Any FC/NES console can be modded for RGB output. I have an AVFC with that feature. It's just kind of an intense mod so it's a pricey job if you don't (or can't) do it yourself.

the mod itself is also just expensive even if you do it yourself right? i have an AV famicom that's still unmodded, i have done basic modchips and fixing jobs but i dunno if i would dare to attempt the rgb mod

I feel pretty confident that it'll work on the OG Famicom. If it can pull frame data out of the cart slot then the analog circuit is going to be out of the loop.

I have to wonder if it's a total reimplementation of the PPU done entirely by sniffing reads/writes on the PPU bus. It sure sounds like it.

i just played through the gbc port of magical chase for the pc engine. its incredibly good, crazy parallax scrolling with big sprites and lots of projectiles, especially in the final stages. probably the best looking gbc game ive seen so far, anyone else played it? its really impressive

Just that one. There's lots of Famicom games that include lyrics for their music. Bomber King (RoboWarrior) and Golgo 13 even have a karaoke mode.

There's a softmodding mail chain on the r/originalxbox. Depending which country you are in, all the required stuff is on offer to borrow.

My only working NES/Famicom in console form is the Sharp Twin and I hear it's super messy to get a RGB mod working there. No idea if that's true or not, 'cause I still got a bunch of other systems to try and mod/fix before I get to this one (and I'm already aware it needs a new floppy disk band thingy for one thing and probably new caps), but I embrace an easy RGB mod board like this because it will probably work with my model with no issues.

Keep bustin'
There's nothing about a typical GBA screen mod that would prevent it from working with a Game Cube link cable, right? Interested in an original-style GBA, but primarily as a controller to use with GBI, so I wouldn't want to lose that functionality. I was looking at those Hori digital controllers but this is actually the cheaper option lmao. Those "Old Skool" clone controllers are readily available, but review consensus seems to be "they're fine if you source and trim your own membranes and modify basically everything about them" so figured I'd pass. Also I did just get one of the older, fatter GBA EverDrives, so I'm sure I'd get some use out of that too!

Typical shouldn't cause issues. If you did one that did composite out over the link cable, I'd be concerned, but it's not like you can do that accidentally.

Whoever mods an original NES/FC/NES2 will have to add a custom multiout on the exterior somewhere. Aftermarket Nintendo-style AV-outs are available. A bonus benefit of using those is that, assuming the port is wired up correctly, you can use SNES cables with it, like the HD Retrovision for YPbPr since the cable itself handles the conversion to component.

I'm not sure. You need to purchase an aftermarket PCB kit and I don't know how much those are. Monitor Burn charges quite a lot for the mod but I assume most of it is labor. The AVFC I have came pre-modded by him.

Awake and unreal, off to nowhere
I signed up to get notifications when the 3DO ODE was available to pre-order and didn't get any notifications and they are now open, here's the links:

External: https://3do.dev/products/xport-ode-batch1
Internal: https://3do.dev/products/fz1-ode-batch1

Had I known these were going to be this expensive and a $100 difference in price for the internal, I would have focused on trying to get one with a broken drive just to save some money all round. Also charging $15 for shipping, though I guess if you are willing to pay $250-$350 for one of these that might not be a concern.

Zoph
Sep 12, 2005

I was excited for a 3DO ODE but $350 for the one I can use with the model I own is just way too spicy. Maybe if they ever go on sale.
