This is going to be a hot rear end take. Wheel standers are dumb. They are built to do that and are just a logical conclusion taken to the extreme like drift cars, donks, or Carolina squatting. Put the motor up front and then I might be impressed.

Also, public roadway goddammit.

That reminded me of a Tatra 815 6x6 like the one the War Rig from Mad Max is based on initially, but the one pictured above seems to use solid axles that rotate around the mounting point of the transfer case, so not Tatra.
The 815 uses a central enclosed tube that the driveshaft goes down from rear to front, with a tranfer case in the middle. They still use the same design:
https://www.tatratrucks.com/why-tatra/tatra-vehicle-design/tatra-vehicle-design-1/

They're kind of like VW swing axles, with attendant camber change on articulation. Incredibly flexible, though.

Not sure what the above one is, but the bolt-together diff housings scream "Russian" to me.

This is what people don't realize. Stubby Bob still had a mid mounted rear wheel drive motor. It also wasn't mounted deliberately high up. It took torque to get that truck in the air. Wheel standers are rear mounted with the engine over or behind the rear axle to leverage as much weight off the front axle as possible. They're easy to get into the air and easy to set down. A lot of them also have steering so it's not like they're even hard to control. They're interesting machines but people generally give them too much credit.

This is what people don't realize. Dragsters are mid mounted with the engine near the rear axle to leverage as much weight onto the rear tyres as possible. They're fast to get off the line and fast mid-track. A lot of them also have steering so it's not like they're even hard to control. They're interesting machines but people generally give them too much credit.

I want a special car that has to be trailered to a special closed road so I can drive in a circle that goes nowhere on tires that measure their life by the hour.

Wheel standers are valid.

Not my cup of tea but still valid.

I do like that ais collective take is not on public roads though.

But yes, it's good to see AI in general understanding "no public roads". I don't care what you want to build if you happen to like it past that, even if it's not racing. Go wild, it will probably be fun to see or at least make fun of.

Don't they also have to replace a good portion of the engine components after each <5-second run?

Something that has always made me curious - about all racing but in particular Top Fuel drag - is, I guess, how purpose-built can you get? I know I've brought this up on these forums before, maybe even ITT, but it seems to me even as a layman that the rules for Top Fuel require the engines to be based on rather archaic designs, is this fair or are big-block Hemis with screw superchargers and 'look-how-hard-i-can-pee' fuel injectors actually the best tool for the job? F1 seems a much better example of the rules actually allowing competitors to make technological advancements that continue to break records. So if you threw out most of the rulebook, and gave some Europeans infinite money to build a new ICE-powered drag car, would it still look like a Top Fuel dragster?

Last time I brought this up someone mentioned a Le Mans-adjacent project that was basically "throwing out the rulebook," and it was very interesting and informative, but I want to see what you could do with a drag car, take the most neanderthal form of racing and use some tech magic on it.

Joe Mama posted:

I used to get a big hate boner for 'riced out' cars. Ever since I've owned a few motorcycles (that I probably could have taken better care of :() I don't like to yuck people's yums about cars anymore. I might privately think it looks ugly but I usually correct myself, "that guy probably loves his car and there's nothing wrong with that."

The only exception to this that I still scoff at openly are Lamborghinis, which are the Ed Hardy trucker hats of the supercar world.

Top Fuel Dragsters need a full rebuild every run and turn their clutch to dust on every run. It is the pinnacle of getting power out of an engine just long enough to get it down the track before it grenades.

poo poo, if you gave the present Top Fuel teams a free hand the powertrain would be a hell of a lot different. I don’t know if the cars would change radically; Definitely more tire and more wheelbase, maybe different aero.

The engine and clutch though? Whooooooo. I don’t even know where they’d go. Probably more nitro, definitely more inches, probably turbos. It’d be a hell of a thing, certainly.

Honestly, you can probably look at the SCTA AA/BFS land speed cars for where the engines would go, just with a clutch and direct drive rearend instead of a transmission.

I mean, someone did break the record with a jet-powered car, didn't they? (EDIT: I guess it was a rocket-powered car? 3.22 seconds) That's why I specified ICE, it would certainly be interesting to see what they could do if they weren't limited to big V8 power, like we're all still living in loving American Graffiti or something.

Even with the rulebook they have, Top Fuel is already approaching the limits of what can be done in terms of putting power down to a 1320 1000 foot track. I'm sure you'd make more power if you ran more displacement and more nitro, and possibly from scavenging exhaust energy via turbos (potentially losing very-beneficial downforce from the exhaust in the process - yes, the exhaust makes downforce) but how much more could you really put down without just becoming a rolling smokeshow?
