Top Fuel only races to 1000' because at this point they need the extra 320' of shutdown distance to try and gain back some safety margin. If you did find some significant gain in performance outside of current NHRA rules and even picked up just a few tenths or tens of MPH, you'd be too fast to safely use it at any existing track.

I always found it interesting that these rocket cars used drag radials in the rear despite not being driven. Probably easier to use standard kit, but I know it not strictly necessary, just look at the LSR world for proof.

The sense of scale and enormity of racing is easily lost on people. These machines make it look easy. Vanishing Point was effectively a bomb pointed towards the horizon. This is why it is important to go watch races in person, and get behind the driver seat if you are privileged enough to do so. It very quickly makes arguments against it or making false equivalences to things that appear similar look stupid. Like the overview effect, but less SPAAACE and politicians calling space exploration a waste of money. Along those lines, people who think drag racing is easy compared to road course racing are stupid.

I think once you start talking about rocket cars with non-driven wheels, you can technically make something so fast that a human wouldn't survive the acceleration, so it becomes sort of a "what are we even trying to do here" thing.

Looks like they're narrower than the usual slicks, maybe 10", and definitely being run at higher pressures. Most jet dragsters run similar in my experience. Like only 6-8" wide rather than 16".

I can be impressed by Similarly Lewis Hamilton adapting to any weather conditions and having the reaction time he has etc. I can be impressed by Top Fuel guy being in the physical shape to take however many g of acceleration and the mechanics building the engine to the edge of mechanics and the tyres to put that to the ground etc as well

The most fun always lies in something with moderate power and excellent suspension tuning Yup the gutless pos fiat was a blast to drive (when it worked) because with 23hp it was nearly impossible to break any laws, you could just throw it around all day at full throttle smiling. The 320i was excellent as well but a bit faster with track suspension, brakes and 205 wide track tires but still 110hp on a good day.

It was all stock so he was understandably underwhelmed since the Del Sol had Tanabe coilovers, strut bars, and some decent rubber. I told him I’d make it better so I put on an HKS Cool Style exhaust I had from my previous fit, Tein springs and new struts, and some nicer wheels. Now even my wife likes it, and she poo-poo’d the car when I first got it as “nice but too boring”. My EP3 civic Si also has full suspension, camber arms, etc etc and even with only ~165hp it’s just so much fun to drive. Now I just need to do something about the stock suspension on my S2000…

For that, I love my Crown Vic - it's a V8 couch, perfect for the job. Still pretty low power given it's an early 2000s Ford 4.6 (247 HP in the cop trim) and handles decently well for a 4000 lb. machine also thanks to cop stuff. I'm on the verge of needing new shocks, though - it's not bouncing or wallowing, but rebound is getting a little uncontrolled in the front. Also needs lowering, but that's personal aesthetics.
