When I was kid I would watch reruns of TNG every night at 7PM. When the intro opened with a shot of a planet instead of a nebula, I knew I was in for a bad time.

Lower Decks, in my estimation, was 50% good episodes. TNG, by comparison, is about the same. If anything, that comparison means Lower Decks will be the best Trek of this generation.

The Corbomite Maneuver has a great ending, but everything before Kirk decides to bluff? There just plain isn't enough story, so there's so much padding of the runtime. Seriously, sit down and watch the whole thing, not just the good bits. Every set of long reaction shots going around to everyone on the bridge while they play the "straining engines" sound effect will make you wish the B plot had been invented in time for this episode to have gotten one.

The rest of your list, yeah, all good to excellent.

It doesn't help that there were fewer commercials in a 1 hour slot back then, so there is SO. MUCH. FILLER.

When they remastered them in the late 90s, they cut a lot of that chaff out for more commercial breaks and honestly you don't miss it at all.

I think people forget that good Trek is GOOD Trek, but liteally every Trek series lies on a shag carpet of mediocre pablum. The idea that every episode should be a banger is ridiculous

There really is a soporific effect to 90s trek. Neutral colors, flat lighting, asmr warp engine drone, soft focus at 480p. I'm watching VOY right now and it's absolutely first tier bedtime TV, Janeway's gravelly voice lulling me to sleep.

Hemmer is great because he's every engineer and programmer as a character. He has attitude because he knows his poo poo is right and that whatever you're asking him to do is a waste of his time but he's going to do it anyway because the alternative is more talking to people.

Serious question: are these the best sets on any Trek show, ever?

DS9 set the bar pretty high with its Promenade set but these SNW sets look like they're from the 1979 feature film, but better.

I used to agree with this but my recent rewatch of TNG and DS9 has proven that, no, good Trek was actually phenomenally good television and any good television we have today is a loving miracle by comparison.

If you're allowing "The Cave" or whatever its called to be considered "a set" then yes.

With some of these shots you have to wonder how exactly they're achieving the shot. Is it a CG set extension, is it the render cave, or is it an actual set? Either way, the only time it wasn't visually seamless was in episode 2 when the comet cave was pretty clearly just the render cave with some stuff in the middle.

So with these shots, what do you think they're doing exactly? Here are my guesses:

Real set with the whole transporter bay cropped out and replaced with CG.

CG set extension -- the upper level looks all CG and the lower level is the sickbay set again disguised with different lighting, the ceiling removed, and a super wide lens.

Just a gorgeous set.

OLED screen array in shot, just a set.

CG set extension or the cave?

Real set with the cave out the windows.

I want hardwood floors, like a nice dark oak herringbone, that officers can slide around on in their socks

Also if the D had random ficus plants in the hallways then the 2020s version of that I guess would be succulents

The funny thing about that little alien library set is that I'm absolutely certain those are pieces of Discovery's engineering containing the mushroom cannisters they use.

Una’s log at the end was really good, wondering if she got a pass because she was “one of the good ones”.

I feel like this is one of those dumb "people don't communicate" things. Pike hinted at what transpired on the planet's surface with his comment to the effect of, "from what I've learned today, we are gravely mistaken about Ilyurians" but apparently he didn't tell her about this colony's daring attempt to make amends with the Federation or that the spooky ghosts they became protected Pike and Spock from the storm. If you know what he knows, it's clear his praise is not merely a "credit to your race" kind of compliment, but it's also looks like Una isn't aware of that.

I appreciate that the talking computer is back, since I was worried Rod Roddenberry was so invested in that attempt to synthesize Majel's voice that Federation computers were just gonna never talk again. But the interface for the computer is also much more in-line with "this but better" futurism from the late 1980s than LCARS was. Whenever nerds try to put LCARS into practice in a Linux theme or something, it's clunky and ugly, but anyone who remembers when computers had your choice of green or orange on a black screen can feel a sort of familiarity with the interface on this one.

I also like that you already kind of know that the reason Pike stayed behind to pick up Spock is because he's counting on his fixed death to keep him from dying here, but he didn't have to say that all over again because the writers think you have a brain.

I know it's a stylistic decision but I really wish they would apply the "microfiber cloth to the lens" filter already. I know it's nitpicky and dumb but it distracts me every time I see the schmutz effect on screen.

Otherwise though, yeah, I love the new ship. And I've really been enjoying SNW so far. After the slog that was Picard, I'm actually excited to watch new episodes. I want to spend more time with these characters and be in their adventures! It makes me feel like a kid again. :unsmith:

I have a feeling we might see a plot point where Pike is being reckless to see if he can die or if his destiny is set in stone, Maybe he wants to die rather than end up in the beeping chair. That might be too much character development for modern trek though.

I mean yeah if they're going for the 60's look, then they need that one carpeted room with the bean bags, which isn't officially called the stoner room, but is totally the stoner room.
