Old Town Road to EGOT

Pretty much every track from their first album is killer.

I saw them live a couple times back in the early years. What was that MIDI instrument they used to let people in the audience play? It was some kind of keytar, wasn't it? I remember that thing being pretty badass.

They JUST came out with a new album; and poo poo, I saw them open for Depeche Mode at a huge venue. It would be great to see them at a small spot, but I don't think they're on life support just yet.

That was called The Atari, it was a custom built thing that was sort of like a simplified portable theremin.

My ideal Mutemath album would have all the raucous live energy of Odd Soul but a little less of the bluesy affectations and the "Instagram filter" production. I don't think that specific sound ever should've become their resting place, but it was a really fun pit stop. I think because it was basically "do or die" time for them, having been through an awful album cycle and losing their guitarist but still having to deliver an album, they trusted their gut and had fun more than they ever did again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADrBzG69wEg

Vitals was also a great album but they still overthunk it, chasing "minimalism" at the expense of some of their classic drum grooves. They were still there but you had to hunt for them. And they ended up leaving the best song off the album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyj7SDuj1C8

This is a frickin jam, but it seemingly lost out to the catchy but ultimately inferior "Best of Intentions".

We've already seen a dead horse
I managed to grab the vinyl limited editions of the Jens Lekman reissues last week. I didn’t expect to find them so I’d already got the digital versions from Bandcamp. They came with download codes so if anyone wants them go right ahead. ☺️

Aside from maybe of Montreal’s ‘Hissing Fauna…’, I reckon ‘Night Falls Over Kortedala’ must be my most repeatedly purchased album. First from eMusic back in 2007, then the CD, the original vinyl when I found it in a shop in Stockholm a couple of years ago, the download from Bandcamp before it got removed from sale (I’ve since lost the CD so wanted to make sure I had a lossless copy) and now the download and vinyl of the reissue.

I love it so much, it’s still just as beautiful as when I first heard it.

What are some bands that got a decent following that you were sure would blow up and never did? Even more interesting would be ones that are still active but clearly lost touch with most of their early hype and fanbase.

Grandaddy was pretty big for a brief moment, but they deserved to be bigger. Pitchfork threw a temper tantrum over one of their early EPs ("The Diary of Todd Zilla"), which kind of torpedoed their momentum.

My friends and I used to talk about how rare it is for a band to release 3 "A or A+" albums in a row, and that the bands that can accomplish this are the legendary ones that demand attention for a long time rather than falling through the cracks. Grandaddy did this with Under the Western Freeway -> The Sophtware Slump -> Sumday.

They've released a few singles semi-recently which are actually some of the best of their career:

I've been a long time Owen fan. I actually quite liked his 2014 album In Conflict. His 2020 album Island is super dark though. He went through a couple of rough years there where a fan accused him of sexual assault, and after some protracted mediation or something, she admitted there was no assault, she was just upset about something else he did, and they apologized to each other.

Game Theory made 4 albums that you could probably pick 3 of and say "Yeah, those are great" - 'Real Nighttime', 'The Big Shot Chronicles', 'Lolita Nation' and '2 Steps From the Middle Ages'. (My pick would be the latter 3).
I'm not 100% up on my knowledge of the sales of indie-rock albums from the 80s, but the fact that they were all mostly out of print until 2014/15 reissues (with bonus tracks) suggests that they didn't exactly set the world on fire. (Also, Scott Miller's lyrics regularly comment/reflect on how badly his albums sold).

Friend of the Family (from Real Nighttime)
If and When It Falls Apart (from Real Nighttime)
Erica's Word (from The Big Shot Chronicles)
Like a Girl Jesus (from The Big Shot Chronicles)
The Waist and the Knees (from Lolita Nation)
Dripping with Looks (from Lolita Nation)
Room for One More, Honey (from 2 Steps From the Middle Ages)
Throwing the Election (from 2 Steps From the Middle Ages)

I was very wrong to question Purity Ring's new stage setup. It is absolutely fantastic. The old hanging lights were awesome, but this new one reminds me of Tool's most recent setup with the 3d screen. Stardew in particular is absolutely gorgeous live.

The sound was great. Megan changed outfits a ton and sounded amazing. Wonderful show and the setlist is sooooo good.
