All I've been able to figure out is "Someone harassed the leader of Sirenswarm, the directorate did not immediately execute the harasser, and now we're dunking on the idiots involved in that decision." I think there was some related goonfucking as well? In which case, yeah keep going. When I was around during the war there was still an uncomfortable amount of bigotry in the fleet that doesn't really match with the old "fleet culture lags forum culture by approximately 5 years" excuse.
