You can still buy an M16 most places in the US, you just can’t register a new production one. Hope you’ve got deep pockets. I seem to recall that the justices made a big deal about the machine gun registry being super constitutional in the Heller opinion in an attempt to avert exactly that argument. People are terrified of full auto firearms, and I doubt the registry will ever be reopened.
