MGM has lost the rights to Tomb Raider which means the previously planned sequel to the Alicia Vikander reboot movie is dead. So expect yet another Tomb Raider reboot to happen in a couple years when whoever buys the rights next gets around to making a movie.

That fuckin' blows. I didn't think the first Vikander movie was too great but Vikander herself was awesome and I was looking forward to the sequel. It was disappointing she got stuck in a weirdly long feeling movie. Way too much WILL SHE GO TO THE PLACE OR WILL SHE NOT like Jesus Christ it's called Tomb Raider not Tomb Contemplator.

It’s incredibly weird how they paced the movie. They sort of took the vague plot of the 2013 reboot, but then wasted the first half of the movie on some boxing/bike courier plot that has nothing to do with it. Then they slammed together a bunch of the action setpieces from the game in quick succession, then it was over after a little sequel bait that has gone nowhere.

Yeah, they introduce Hannah John-Kamen as her best friend who then doesn't go on the trip with her, so... ???

If they’d just abbreviated down the plot to the game and maybe consolidated some characters it would have been several times better than what they ended up with.

I'd kinda like to see Camilla Luddington, who did the voice in the reboot games, get a chance at the role in live action. She's no Vikander but she's done good with the part.

I started watching the Vikander Tomb Raider on Netflix a while back, got bored after 10-15 minutes of Lara faffing around in London showing off all manner of what I assume were Chekhov's Skills, and decided to come back to it later. Netflix being Netflix, by "later" it was gone. But I've yet to hear anything to make me go "I really should give that another try." Maybe if I see the DVD for £1 at CEX...

The Jolie TRs were as dumb as a box of rocks, but at least they didn't lose my interest before the end of the first act.

Popular culture has passed you by.
I haven't seen a single Tomb Raider movie yet. I am kind of tempted by the Jolie ones because they seem like dumb fun, but there was just always better stuff around. I wonder if any studio ever plans on really making a good Tomb Raider action movie or if those Jolie movies were the franchise's peak and everything now is just "eh, people will have heard of the game."

I never really heard much discussion of the two sequel games to the 2013 reboot. I believe they were decently well regarded but they seemed to mostly fly under the radar. The franchise was much bigger in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is probably the best of the trilogy. Really cool world they put together. All the action scenes are great. Everything comes together really well and isn’t bogged down with a bunch of origin story stuff.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is good as well, but a bit of a step backwards in some way. The tomb puzzle portions are drastically improved from the first two games where they were honestly pretty weak. They gave Lara all these Predator-esque jungle combat abilities, but you so rarely get to use them. Too much time gets spent in this hidden city in the jungle, which is impressive, but they overused it a ton.

There’s an overarching plot about a secret society called Trinity throughout the trilogy. Mentions of it are more of a cameo in the first game. It becomes a major plot point in the second game. But like many secret society plots it turned into a pointless wet fart in the third game.

They were decent games, but I absolutely hated the direction the plot went after the first one. Rise is all about Lara’s mommy issues and Shadow is some grimdark bullshit about her obsession with her destroying Trinity almost causes the destruction of the world, and also she has daddy issues now. Also every game is about how she finally becomes the tomb raider, which is not something I need to know three times.

I would much prefer that they went back to a more light hearted globetrotting adventure series instead of this weird mass murder survival poo poo. It’s just dull and they never took it anywhere interesting after the first game. Also Lara is just kinda lovely and annoying as a character instead of a fun and confident action icon. Whatever they’re doing next sounds like more of the same.

This is how I feel about the reboot games. They're too 'serious' and grim and why can't we just have cool action girl doing cool action poo poo again?

What's hilarious is that Trinity's leaders, the Big Bads from the first two games, get killed off-screen in a radio message in Shadow, because the new writers had created their own villains they wanted to focus on.

I'm very much like previous posters in that the reboot is too serious and grim.
Not to mention weirdly gore porn-y with all the gruesome ways she can die.

Yeah, the original Lara Croft character didn't even have the conceit of Indiana Jones where he's stealing artifacts to present in a museum or for academia, she's literally taking them for her own collection or personal enjoyment. Also, the first instinct when she discovers a hidden cave system filled with living fossil dinosaurs is to murder them because they're in her way.

The Tomb Raider reboot definitely goes way into that creepy trend of 'protect your doe-eyed daughterwife from lovingly detailed, frequently sexualised violence' that was a thing for a while. Though Lara's always been a bit of a victim of action heroines being Whedonised for the last couple decades.

I don't really think that is the case. She kills a bunch of people in the games, and its not a ludonarrative dissonance situation. The game acknowledges she is a survivor that can handle things herself. Unless things really change for Shadow.

I get this funky high on the yellow sun.

The first game of the reboot series I believe had a trailer / gameplay debut at E3. The majority of it was Lara crawling through a small cave space and wincing in pain / getting hurt, and then other stuff of her just in peril and near torture. It felt very Eli Roth at the time.

The reboot had a bunch of QTE segments that were big action sequences of "Oh poo poo survive this thing!" Which is mostly fine in theory but QTEs suck and several of them are very trial and error so you ended up with the extremely graphic deaths.

I really enjoyed the TR reboot gameplay, but the QTEs were a bit much. I'm pretty sure I beat the second and third but I couldn't tell you what the plots were beyond "Lara going to find the Mcguffin"

i've repeated myself several times on the tomb raider reboots and how they have problems with the writing, and one of the key things is every game somehow must have at least one scene where she turns into a Deity of Wrath who destroys everything in her path because she assumed they have killed her friend(s), regardless how necessary it is

Lara is a straight-up dead-eyed murder machine in Shadow, and the game actively encourages you to have her kill people in the most gruesome, hands-on ways possible. She's basically Jason Vorhees in a vest top. At one point I thought her buddy was going to call her out on turning into a merciless psycho killer, but no, he acts as her enabler.

The murder of dinosaurs can hardly be excused (well, it's delf-defense), but the plot of the first Tomb Raider is about a literal demon tricking her into resurrecting Atlantis. She's applying her skills as a job, and when she finds out that it's all a plot of world domination, she tries to stop it. It's as good a story hook as any and her being an imperialist collector wasn't really a thing until later on. I feel like it's a pretty easy thing to avoid in a reboot.

The very first time we see Lara, before we even get a full look at her face, we learn that she found and killed Bigfoot. She also has the Ark of the Covenant in her house. She was always an "adventurer" in the British Empire-era sense of "goes to foreign countries, kills their wildlife and steals their poo poo."
