I do feel the need to point out that I really never intended to play this game for the LP. I'm not a big RTS guy, and I feel like Halo Wars' lore contributions to the Halo universe could be summed up in a bonus video. But I dislocated one of the fingers on my left hand, making it very difficult to play most video games. Rather than let this thread languish any longer, I figured what the heck let's do it. At the end of the day it is an interesting and fun game and it's just more Halo for the Halo thread.

So do you play this game one handed then? Or with your feet

If I was pulling a Vicas, I'd have the webcam to prove it. Nah, my injury is on my left hand, so I can't really do the quick WASD type of stuff I need to do to play FPS games well. For Halo Wars, and probably other RTS games, most of the effort is on the mouse so the left hand is just camera controls and hot keys, which I can manage while wearing a splint.

Sorry to hear about the finger. Been there, loving sucked.

The cutscenes were done by Blur, the same studio that did H2A's! They aged pretty well but you can definitely see how they improved.

One thing the developers talked about in interviews was trying to get not only the looks but the motion of all the vehicles accurate to the FPS games, including how warthogs bounce and fishtail.

Also, confirming you didn't get the kill 100 grunts because you're playing on Easy. Easy features less enemies, but bonus objectives are the same on all difficulties.

I have no knowledge of this game, so it'll be interesting to see how Halo Wars plays out. You definitely meant it when you said this is a more simplified RTS. Stuff like the Scorpion would have been something unlocked after like 5 or 6 missions in a normal RTS like Starcraft or Age of Empires, not in the second mission.

A few other notes:

* Upgrading your central base structure not only unlocks new stuff, it adds more building slots to the base.

* Flamethrowers are pretty bad. They're very short-ranged, and the Covenant will gleefully ram them with vehicles or bring in units that are much more dangerous up close.

* Your score is based on the time you take to complete the mission, how many enemies you kill, and how many secondary and bonus objectives you complete.

Nope! Your losses aren't factored into your score at all. :v:

The humans, in general, are flavored in this game (and its sequel, if y'all play it) as being the brute force faction. Most of your units have special abilities that come down to 'kill the enemy faster,' and most of their upgrades are 'more/better guns.' However, they tend to be slow and most human units are specialized at fighting one particular kind of enemy. This also makes gauss hogs, if you unlock them via research, incredibly good because they're very fast for human units and effective against both infantry and vehicles.

The Covenant, on the other hand, are on average significantly faster than humans, have cheaper units, and have special abilities that are more for defense or utility. While the single player campaign doesn't interact much with them, the Covenant in multiplayer also lean heavily on their hero units as significant force multipliers. Covenant units are in general more flexible and can engage a wider variety of targets effectively.

It's a remarkably well-balanced game, with the good design choice of making the playable side the more straightforward and easy to learn of the two. There is a DLC campaign for Halo Wars 2, though, where you play as the not-Covenant.

Well, it's more that there's a lot more stuff to "unlock" as we move along. Halo Wars made up a ton of new vehicles.

From what I've read, it's basically more '343 Studios can't find their rear end with both hands and a roadmap.'

Another interesting bit I read was that there was at one point an idea to do a Covenant campaign for Halo Wars 1 set during the actual events of Halo away from the Master Chief.

Blah, I can't find a video - but in the old RTS Dune II you could move treaded vehicles over infantry units, there would be a death-scream sound effect that was cut off with a CRUNCH, then when you moved off the area, there was a red smear. It was very visceral.

Same goes for the early Command and Conquer games. Vehicles versus basic infantry was a very one-sided encounter.

Oh, since this got me to reinstall and play Halo Wars again myself, word of advice: one of your leader powers is a healing ability. On mission 4, which is notoriously hard, you can use the heal to heal the mission objectives you need to defend.

There's actually more than enough on the map - about 125 in total - but any kills made by the AI marines you have to rescue don't count towards your own total, and since on easy your troops do more damage and the AI has less health, more Grunts slip through. In particular, there's a full squad of 10 just before the forcefield that it's basically impossible to get to before the marines kill them all on easy.

Kibayasu

It was NOD that had artillery in Tiberian Sun and it was broken because despite it being a gun the shots tracked at whatever they shot at so they always hit anything on the ground, no matter how fast it was moving. Though the undisputed champion of artillery (and others) destruction is World in Conflict: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCIU5WxFjTA

That escort mission is actually a pretty classic RTS mission archetype but seemed to actually be a pretty complicated one for being the fourth mission. In most other games I've seen it they typically restrict you to air units so you can move around the map quickly without having to worry about terrain. That might be another limitation of consoles though. It was really neat that Spartans were able to hijack vehicles.

Halo Wars in general takes the view that it's animals in general. You haven't built any yet, but you have the option to build Wolverines - they're the humans' dedicated anti-air unit.

Halo Wars 2 adds the Rabbit and Kodiak.

Not to offer too many suggestions on a not-too-serious video but I imagine the main problems were the classic RTS mistake of "I need to tech up first then build units" but also not taking over both bases. The cost of building two bases may seem like a waste at first but since bases are your resources the income will soon outpace the initial cost (as long as you're still building units).

Yeah I figured by the end that I should have had the other base cranking out supplies, but the first point is a really good one. I do think that I try and rush to the units I want instead of using the units I have. I should try and keep that in mind.

Frenzy's skills nonwithstanding, Halo Wars is odd. It doesn't feel like any other RTS, it feels kinda... sticky? Unresponsive? It's looking for a degree of speed that the controls just can't deliver. I've played it on PC, and I'll be honest, I've got no idea how I ever finished it on the 360.

It's designed to be played on a controller, so it's definitely intended to be a slower experience. The fact that I can click on the mini-map seems to be one of the only PC improvements they made, because otherwise you're just navigating around with a joystick.
