It seems like with plausible deniability magic you'd want to battle by messing with things internally. Have all their joints slip out of their sockets, fracture a bone, give them a heart attack etc.

Or like throw a rock at a dude, miss but hit a gas pipe that cracks then sparks when it hits the ground sending a burst of fire that roasts the dude.
