Its a shame they dont have the rigths to use Tom Bombadil. It would so easy to fit him in a episode. No reason he can`t teleport his little realm around middle earth at will by singing one of his silly songs so he could turn up anywhere at any time.

Especially for Amazon, which has probably the least elastic subscription base of all the companies, since so many people have it because it comes free with Prime.

Rich people laundering their public image by funding high quality art that will not be strictly profitable in an economic sense, but will show off how big their money dick is. Jeff Bezos funding a lavish adaptation of the Silmarillion that is an absolute commercial flop is a win in my book.

Dan Murrell is a guy I occasionally watch(reasonable dude and not one of those chuds) and he didn't really like the first two episodes at all. He says its very slow and meandering without a Frodo or Aragorn type character for the audience to really latch onto.

Looking forward to yet another Prime subscription cost increase to offset this stuff while I watch literally nothing on Amazon Video and just want my packages to come to my house for free.

They're actually spending not much more on streaming content than they were 2 years ago. And the biggest cost to that isn't the Rings of Power, it's the $1billion they paid to get streaming rights for NFL football's Thursday Night Game. Also compare their 2021 $13m streaming budget to Netflix's $17bn or Disney's insane $33bn

S. Lewis made that lion dude to be a Christ figure. I find it pretty clear that Tolkien used allegory and brought modern themes into his work at places. Like themes of industrialization with Isengard and Saruman's conflict with the ents from Fangorn. Or about the transformation people go through in war with the hobbits returning to Shire.

That's more theme than allegory.

I wouldn't classify man versus nature and war as strictly modern themes either.

Something just occurred to me and I want to write it down so I can say I called it if it happens. Eärien has been stated in promotional materials to be looking for her purpose in life, potentially at odds with her family, a little naive about the tensions in Numenorean society, and she wants to be an architect. Akallabêth spoilers: She's going to design, or help build, Sauron's temple to Morgoth. 3 hours, 37 minutes and 25 seconds to go!

BoldFace posted:I wouldn't classify man versus nature and war as strictly modern themes either. I see the conflict between Isengard and ents as pretty straight forward metaphor for industrialization which is a modern phenomena. Like sure, there are some ancient examples like ancient Roman industry in their mining operations in Hispania that caused significant environmental damage. It is estimated for example that they increased atmospheric concentrations of lead concentrations by a factor of 10 in Europe. But I'm not aware of any contemporary texts lamenting ancient industrialization. The angst against industrialization came from industrial revolution from 19th century onward. Primordial Fangor and idyllic Shire is contrasted against smoke belching Isengard and transformed Shire with machinery that pollutes the waters etc. Man vs war theme is ancient true, but I'd reckon in Lord of the Rings they are influenced a lot by Tolkien's modern WW1 experiences.
