"LET'S GET DOWN TO WORK!!"

Tony Phillips posted:

I hadn't even thought about opponents just making it happen. How fast would Manfred act if teams just Sadaharu Oh'd him for the rest of the season?

Serious question - what could Manfred do? Institute a rule that says a player can only be walked twice a game? Pitchers have to throw in the strike zone no matter what?

Maybe we'll have an Aaron Judge rule that says Judge - and only Judge - doesn't ever walk on 4 balls. You have to get him out or give him a hit.

seeing that they expect him back for the final series of the regular season so it's probably a component of a tweak + hey let's get our rookie some rest too

So I apologize for bringing up the Astros' sign stealing again but:

As you may have heard, there's a major cheating scandal going on in chess right now. Part of this is that a young player, Hans Moke Niemann, has been repeatedly banned from one of the major online chess sites chess.com. In an interview, Danny Rensch for chess.com talked a bit about how they algorithmically look for cheating, and revealed that they actually consulted with MLB on the Astros case:

Happy 114th anniversary of Merkle's Boner. I learned today that a big reason the home plate umpire Hank O'Day was (allegedly) paying attention to the play at second was because he was the ump for an eerily similar game played a few weeks earlier where a Pirates baserunner also should have been forced out, which would have nullified a game-winning run. This didn't happen because O'Day saw the ball land as a game-winning hit and just left the field entirely.

Weirder yet, a Tribune segment in July 1908 posited almost the same situation in a Q&A article and rightfully said that the run should not score.

Far be it from me to lecture a 103 win team but this seems like a dumb and avoidable position for the Dodgers to be in. Outside of a small sample size stretch in 2021 Kimbrel has been really bad since the end of the 2018 season, and should have been viewed as a high risk high reward upside play, not as the locked in closer.

Still have no idea why they let Kenley walk.
