Doubleposting because this thread is a ghosttown, you said it's a noon kickoff on a Wednesday, I can't speak to the popularity of watching a Champions League game in Vegas (very well may be a big draw) but there won't be poo poo going on other sports-wise so that'll be in y'alls favor.

I've visited Vegas with a co-worker who is a huge Premier league (I guess?) fan, and he never had any issues finding live soccer football futbol matches at any major casino's sports book area. They'll all be showing it, especially during daytime on a weekday -- and on the off chance they're not, they have dozens of screens and will happily change one for you.

Most of the books have a large bar as well as a nice seating area. They're never crowded during the day, except on weekends during NFL/college football season and March Madness (our neverending college basketball championship).

To move the thread on to a more general discussion, it's my wife's first time in Vegas, though I have been about three/four times, and I need to make sure we see what you NEED to see. I'm thinking the usual up and down on the Strip, taking in many of the themed casinos, the 'Welcome...' sign, possibly South outlet mall (I prefer the North one, but South fits in better) and Fremont Street one evening. We're both foodies and drinkers, so if anyone can recommend any decent vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants they have enjoyed that'd be welcomed.
My picks for stuff to see/do:
- The Pinball Hall of Fame -- bonus: it's only a few hundred feet from the "Welcome to..." sign
- The Neon Museum
- Any Vegas show -- I recommend Absinthe or OPIUM if you're not averse to adult (but not porn-y) humor

Definitely go downtown and check out the contrast between that area and the Strip. There are some historic casinos there, and it's a good place to gamble if you want lower-stakes tables. However, the nighttime "Fremont Street Experience" is ehhhhhh. I haven't visited in a few years, but it was ridiculously crowded and all I remember is a bunch of old Green Day songs (the bad ones from the 2000's, not the good ones from the 90's) blasted through awful speakers while a video-based lightshow played overhead. Given the annoyance of catching a cab/Uber/Lyft there and back from the Strip, I felt like it wasn't a good use of my evening.

I don't know a ton about vegetarian cuisine, but Lotus of Siam -- one of the best Thai restaurants in the US -- has a decent vegetarian/vegan section on their menu.

It's my wife's birthday that day too. Here's hoping Benzema and friends don't ruin it at the very beginning!

As soon as our bags touch the hotel bedroom floor, straight to Walgreens to stock up on bottled water!

Sports Books are such great value in Vegas. I love stretching my gambling over hours (vs. feeding a machine or even table gambling) and it's the best place in America to bet on horse racing, which is a good time even if you know nothing about horse racing.

It's not completely specifically Vegas, but I'm looking to go around Halloween time and tack on a visit to New York (that is, the actual city and not the casino)

So a couple of things; first, is Vegas good for Halloween? I'm going to another Magic The Gathering/nerd event so expect there will be stuff connected to that, but does anything go on there generally?

Second, it crossed my mind I might save myself paying for a night in a hotel by taking an overnight flight from Vegas to NY, how would that be? With the time change it would be a really short night and I'd need to wait a bit to get into my NY hotel, so would be out and about, possibly with my bags, for a while on reduced sleep. Worth it?

Every time I've taken a domestic redeye in the US I've regretted it. Further, the Las Vegas airport currently has one of the highest rates of flight delays and cancellations, and if you're there at the end of the day and your flight gets boned there's a decent chance you have to stay at the gate overnight or go back into town and get a hotel. I'd personally just plan to stay the night and get a morning flight the next day, if you're looking to pinch pennies you could get a room at one of the cheap hotels near the airport for your last night but it may not be much less than where you're staying the rest of the time there. And even if you can't check in hotels will almost always hold your bags for you if your room isn't ready so don't drag them all over Manhattan on your first morning if you do elect to take the redeye.

Not to worry, I'll probably fly late and stay somewhere at JFK before heading into the city. The airport Radisson had a nice buffet breakfast last time I went which I hope is still there.

The event I'm going to is at World Market Centre, so it seems like it would make sense to stay Downtown, although the thread seems pretty down on staying around there? Can imagine noise will be an issue depending on where your room is pointing. Maybe I'm better of overall staying mid-to-north Strip and taking the Duece up? A cab ride from somewhere like TI or Strat actually doesn't look too bad.

I'd say it depends what you plan on doing besides the M:TG thing. If you plan on going out and carousing I'd suggest strip, yeah, but if you're going to stick to your main event for the most part I'd suggest staying closer to it even if it's not the best part of town.

And also you mentioned cabs, cabs are better than rideshares in Vegas if for no other reason a lot of them have gone flat rate so there's no bullshit with routes, they get you straight to where you want to go and drop you off.

As much as I think Downtown is underated/slept upon I do mean to hit the Strip at least a couple of times, but that's good info thanks. Must remember to book ahead for the Neon Museum, missed out last year.

I'll just disagree with Midjack a little, because I am a resident and I have taken a lot of red-eyes out of our airport, and a couple times to the east coast. It's going to depend on the person because I'm more comfortable with being slightly fatigued in the late morning and powering through another seven hours than I am with landing in what feels like mid-day but it's dark and everyone is going to bed.

If you get delayed many hours, there's a crap-ton of traditional nongambling hotel chains around the airport and adjacent. Hilton just opened a Hampton Inn and a Home2 a bit south near the outlets mall and Tahiti Village, and also has a Homewood next to 215 where it goes near the airport.

Stratosphere probably isn't too bad, Palace Station or Sahara would be okay as well.

I would also say consider MGM Grand, Tropicana etc if you want to do some stuff on the Strip, because the Centennial Express bus links the Tropicana/Strip intersection with World Market Center, just get off at the downtown outlet mall. It also serves as an airport shuttle as well. So in terms of accessing the stuff you want to get to it's probably better than Treasure Island, Resorts World etc. Just be sure to head out of downtown back to south strip by 10PM if you want to avoid a sizable taxi bill.

Another note about the LVB/Trop area is that NYNY just announced their next hotel refurbishment yesterday, which might make it noisy to stay there. However, I have an anecdote of staying there during their last major refurbishment, and not only did they do it piecemeal so the work way down the hall didn't bother me, but I got an amazing room on the corner of the Empire State Building and one of the most enjoyable tourist stays I had. So I wouldn't advocate writing it off entirely but just be aware.

Near the festival and cheap? Try the Plaza, the D, Downtown Grand, or Golden Nugget. All walkable.

Of those Golden Nugget is the best. If you want actually really nice, go with circa.

Hotel chat. I'm staying at the Aria 10/16-10/19 for a conference, work covering the bill there. I decided I want to stay a few extra nights in Vegas and they quoted me $1900 for 3 extra nights. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on hotels so I'm going to have to move to a different hotel. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced near the strip for a Wednesday-Saturday stay? I don't need Holiday Inn rates but also don't want to spend $600 a night for a hotel just for me.

I would say The Linq so that it's not too much of a trip. Try to avoid "District 3" if you can simply because it's in the way back of the hotel. Still should be cheaper than Bally's or the Flamingo.

It's further down the strip but Resorts World has been running so many crazy deals that the government travelers on GSA rates are staying there.

The Strip's usual Halloween haunted house used to be at Circus Circus and it went away years ago, the people behind it bought a warehouse in the bad part of town around the Stratosphere and run a SAW and Blair Witch licensed escape room, which is the kind of thing you can run year round is likely more lucrative than a few days Halloween house. Haunted Museum is supposedly pretty good.

There's actually quite a few Halloween temporary haunted houses in the city proper, but they're all out in shopping centers using dead mall space in the part of Vegas that's less world-class and more Walmart.

Might need more specifics on taste/budget but you'll be in the thick of it there, just falling over good options. If you get time away from the Strip, and I'll always say you should give Fremont an evening if possible, Pizza Rock is my recommendation for up there from my last trip. If you want cheaper options in broad strokes I think Miracle Mile around Planet Hollywood is the place to go.

Since you've got a conference you'll possibly go past Bagelmania to the main Conference Centre which I'm a big fan of for a quick bite. Peppermill does a great breakfast in my experience and I'm sure great the rest of the day as well. Must say I've been staying further north than you so expect someone can help out with more around the areas you will be in.

Bardot is wonderful in the Aria.

Din Tai Fung is also very good.

Cosmopolitan across the street has some really solid quick eats-- Tekka bar is a great grab and go place for hand rolls. There's this milkshake made with scotch at milkbar that's incredible.

Red Plate at Cosmo is some of the best chinese food i've ever had but it's definitely a more formal setting. Momofuku is also really solid.

The Cosmopolitan is just across a side street and hosts some of my favorite restaurants on the Strip:

- China Poblano by José Andrés is a great casual lunch place, and I always make multiple trips every visit.

- Wicked Spoon is the highest-quality buffet on the Strip. The pandemic hit all of the Vegas buffets pretty hard. They're still open, but only for lunch.

- Jaleo is another José Andrés spot serving high-end Spanish Tapas (the Cosmo tripled down on Andrés' restaurants, and this is not a bad thing). It's not cheap, but the food is amazing.

If you're willing to take an cab/Uber/Lyft -- and make reservations, most likely -- take a little trip over to Lotus of Siam for some of the best Thai food in the United States. That's not hyperbole; it really is that good.

For non-food stuff, my favorite place in all of Vegas is the Pinball Hall of Fame. If you're at all interested in pinball, you can blow an entire day there. They have hundreds of machines spanning the past ~90 years, all playable.

The Luxor is depressing whether you compare it to newer luxury hotels or not.

That whole collection of themed Strip hotels built in the 90's has fallen on really hard times. See also: Excalibur, Treasure Island, Stratosphere.

And especially the Rio, which has the sad bonus of only being Strip-adjacent and a real pain in the rear end to get to without taking a cab. At least they still have Penn and Teller, I guess?

Yeah, I remembered a friend staying there when I went in 2005 and thought "Hey that's a good deal for a semi nice hotel".

Never again. Aside from the general decline, I completely forgot smoking rooms were a thing in Vegas so forgot to ask for it...then construction right outside my room...then Saturday at 7am I got woken up by security because the smoke detector was non responsive, so I had to leave the room. I can't recommend wicked spoon enough. It's not even that expensive considering how much everything is in Vegas these days.

Went with a buddy recently who is lethally allergic to peanuts, and when he asked about peanut allergies at the front they brought out the managing chef who gave him a personal tour of the entire buffet detailing what was safe and not.
