Unfortunately the machine it went with seemed to have evaporated - it's got a replacement controller that does USB that just slots onto the pad card like the original one did. I also put a solenoid in for extra racket.

Hit up the WebSDR of the University of Twente, and on the weekends in the morning (european time) you can hear a lot of AM pirate radio stations on medium wave between 1600 and 1700kHz, and between 6300 and 6500kHz. http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ They aren't that cool to me though, most just play dutch and german folk music. There used to be one - Westcoast - who broadcasted pretty awesome music between 3800 and 4000kHz, but at a certain point in time he became a nuisance to the British or Irish air traffic control who have a HF freqency in that area, and the Dutch authorities got him off the air. He got to keep his transmitters and stuff, on the condition he got his radio amateur license and never pirated again. He - obviously - also got fined. As far as i'm aware, he stuck to the deal. You can also listen in to Gander transatlantic air traffic control on various frequencies. Reception is not the best because Gander's antennas are pointed exactly the wrong way for reception in the Netherlands on the ground. There's no local receiver that i'm aware of, because Ireland and the UK all seem to have laws that make it illegal to listen into transmissions that aren't explicitely meant for you. The Netherlands don't have such laws. You can tune into any unencrypted govt frequency you want! LimaBiker has a new favorite as of 13:18 on Dec 31, 2022 |

Funny you should mention this (air traffic radio). I've been interested in picking up an old rear end antique radio and a lot of them have not just AM radio reception but also short and long wave bands as well. Some have specific frequencies listed of as "Police", "Airlines" and so on. Also some frequencies are marks on there as the "frequencies for cities" like Paris, London, Tokyo, Moscow etc...

But be careful - tube radios practically always need fresh paper capacitors, and need the power supply electrolytics checked for electrical leakage. Even if they appear to work, the electical leakage can cause too high current through transformers and tubes, blowing them up. Usually it's about €15 in parts and an hour of labor if it's an easy to work in radio, and an experienced repairsman doing a 'mindless' capacitor swap.  I've done a full electrical restoration on this thing for a paying customer. It performs flawlessly on all the AM band, pulling in dozens of stations with a little active loop antenna indoors. Currently there's a bluetooth receiver plugged into the phono input, and i'm test running it connected to my PC. It's been a bit of a struggle, because someone has gotten in there before me and (unknowingly) covered up a major fault in the radio. It's worth it to the owner because it's a family heirloom thing. The list: - All new paper capacitors - New electrolytics - New rectifier - New string for the dial pointer - New mains cord - New loudspeaker - New cloth for the loudspeaker - One new knob. - And finally, after everything was working and tested, a new power transformer... After i replaced the caps and essentially got it working again, i noticed quite a substantial mechanical hum, but it seemed to work fine - although drawing a couple watts too much power. The PSU transformer didn't heat up too much, no weird smells so i just kept it running. Occasionally it would make a popping sound, but i attributed that to bad contacts, although i did notice that it did not respond to knocking the chassis with the back of a screwdriver. After about an hour it buzzed loudly and i quickly turned it off - and a smell of burnt transformer varnish wafted out of it. I had been watching it closely because of the hum and noises, so i could turn it off before actual smoke came out. The previous owner seems to have noticed an issue with it before. One of the paper caps was already replaced, and so was the rectifier (which he replaced by two diodes in the socket of the old tube) - and that indicates that the cap probably shorted out long long ago, pulling the rectifier with it in its death. This, however, likely has caused damage to the transformer. Probably one or two turns of the high voltage winding shorted out, causing the hum and ever so slightly higher power consumption. I replaced the solid state rectifier with the original tube, which caused a slightly higher load on the transformer, but since it was already running at a higher load due to the internal short, it finally gave up after about an hour. Radio forensics is fun! This is not how intense the restaurations usually are, 9 times out of 10 you just swap the caps and it'll be fine. Unless someone ran it on the original caps for more than a few minutes and caused damage that way.  Sound quality is decent. The bakelite radios like these often sound a bit less good than the large wooden ones, but it's completely sufficient for just having some tunes in the background or as a computer speaker. Reception of Philips radios of this era is on par with quality ham radio equipment. They are extremely sensitive, though meant for broadcast use so 'wide as a barn door'.
