Are you flying into Vegas before starting your road trip? If so, all major rental companies should have counters at the airport.

If you're not flying in, in many areas Enterprise will transport you to/from the nearest rental location at no cost. I've rented from Enterprise in Vegas before and had no issues at all. I recommend reserving your rental online in advance to make sure there's a car waiting for you.

Avoid Hertz (and their subsidiaries Thrifty and Dollar), unless you want a free tour of the US criminal justice system.

Thanks! Yeah the Hertz thing looks really nuts, good to hear Enterprise is okay though

Does anyone have any takes on cheaper Las Vegas hotels like the Rio, Strat, etc. or whatever else? It doesn't have to be fancy or the perfect location as long as it's quiet so I'm able to work during the day.

I was pretty happy staying at https://treasureisland.com/ on their "TV And Special" where you skip resort fees. That does mean you can't use the WiFi so that might be an issue for working.

It sounds like you want to be on the Strip, or at least close rather than Downtown? I've seen good reviews for the cheap rooms at The Strat. Rio I've not stayed at, I think they are awaiting a bit renovation and rebranding so may not be in the best shape.

Personally, I'd rather be downtown but I'm not seeing anything terribly cheap and quiet enough still actually get work done.

Hi guys. My parents are having ten days in Vegas soon and are struggling to find a decent deal for renting a car for ten days or so. I know it’s something one can easily Google, but I’m just curious if anyone on the ground can recommend a particular firm based on their own experiences? Thank you in advance.

We are all drinking from the highball glass of ideology.
I would just use Expedia and see who's cheapest at the airport.

However, depending on the reason for the trip a car may not be a great idea. If they're here to visit people or go to Red rock or something, then a car is good. But if they're here to visit the Strip then a car is pretty unnecessary.

They’re seasoned Vegas travellers and always get a car for going out of the city, but this is their first visit from the UK since COVID, and for that reason they haven’t been able to find a deal they’re totally happy with. I’ll let them know what they find on Expedia etc is probably best. Thank you.

Are you here to hunt for a place to live? Just pick one of the "locals" hotels like The Orleans or something. The Strip is for telling people back home that you went to Caesars Palace, and that's going to be far less of exciting claim if you live here.

Condo-hotels like MGM Signature and Hilton Grand Vacations aren't bad if you're more interested in business than gambling and shows.

I've stayed at the Rio before and found it to be pretty quiet. somehow also ended up with a big suite with an office desk and other nice stuff for like 80 a night??? this was 5 years ago and in the winter far away from any holidays so ymmv

The Rio and the Strat are notoriously inconvenient for getting to the Strip -- or at least anywhere on the Strip you'd actually want to go.

I know the poster said location isn't that important, but I'm not sure why you'd want to stay on/near the Strip if you're not doing "Strip things".

Anyway, for what it's worth, the Rio is very quiet because nobody stays there, because it's in a terrible location. They seem to survive on small business conferences and conventions since the hotel room and space rates are relatively cheaper, plus Penn and Teller's show still pulls a decent audience -- I think they were still packing two shows a night on the weekends before the pandemic slowed things down.

The Rio marketplace feels like an abandoned shopping mall, and the casino is fine but nothing special. It's pretty quiet and chill, if that's your primary draw. I wish I'd gotten to visit back when the Rio was new, because it sounds like the "Masquerade in the Sky" thing was awesome, with music and dancers and an overhead parade.

I haven't been to the Strat in over a decade, so no real insights there.

Oh yeah, not sure where exactly to put this. We were hoping to take a road trip out of Las Vegas to the grand canyon and zion national park, but it seems they're getting some snow now. I have driven in heavy snow before, but that was with proper winter tires and that concept seemed to confuse the poo poo out of the enterprise people. What do people usually do? Or should we cancel those plans completely? I'm feeling pretty suspicious of the only recommendation being "all wheel drive"

Man, I drove from LA through Utah, ran into a blizzard. Forget the snow tires, the goddamn wiper fluid had no antifreeze in it! Froze solid in the lines, couldn't see, couldn't get it unstuck.... It loving sucked.

So at least fill up with antifreeze beforehand. I don't think Vegas is going to put snow tires on your rental for you though.

Tacos Al Pastor, opposite Resorts World is my pick for tacos right now but there's a bunch of competition, including Tacos El Gordo a few doors down. But I'm from the UK just Mexican food that might have been looked at by a Mexican person sometime is a big upgrade. I think the only burger I had was In N Out, which I can recommend but if you're already on the US West Coast perhaps not of as much interest. And last time I went over there I also visited NY and availed myself of Italian (American) food there.

There's probably a bunch of YT videos with top 10+ for each of those, but if you have thoughts on the kind of budget you have for them party size etc that might help inform suggestions.

I don't have any particular recs for these (though Tacos el Gordo has the rep for best tacos) but just a heads-up you're likely to wait a long time to get into any of these places. Every time I go by TeG the line is out the door and down the block.

In-n-Out is the same way but they churn through their line pretty drat quick, at least. Good luck finding a seat, though.

I've probably posted it before (might have been the other Vegas thread) but if you're a foodie you can't miss Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan. I don't know if any of the food would win "best ___ in town," but it's all really, really good. Buffet ranges from $40-$60 depending on time and day, but considering how expensive everything in Vegas is that's honestly a pretty solid deal. You can get some bottomless booze for $25 (mimosas, bloody marys, or Bud Light). If you have any food allergies just say so up front and one of the chefs will come out and escort you through the buffet to show you what has your particular allergen(s) in it. I always go whenever I'm in town.

As a Brit a good Taco Al Pastor is essential as good Mexican is hard to find here

Best burger is either Fukuburger or at Fat Choy. Forever shoutout to In n Out, though, if you want a chain burger.

Best wings are at Red Dwarf or Stakeout Bar and Grill. Both are on Maryland Parkway.

Best tacos are at Tacos El Gordo, hands down.

Best Italian is Esther's Kitchen. Though if you want old school Vegas I'd send you to Casa di Amore or the Italian American Club.

The whole strip smells like a portopotty and trying to cross the street is a carefully controlled labyrinth to get you to pass as many shops as possible. Gordon Ramsay Burger was extremely whatever. I wasn't impressed. Maybe the other areas are nicer? I dunno.

Well I’m here and I am staggered by how much more expensive it is than when I was last here in 2014. $25 minimum bet in Bellagio and Cosmopolitan. Daylight loving robbery. It was $10 in 2014. A coffee and tea in the room in Cosmo (because of course Vegas hotels don’t have kettles or a drip machine in room) -$50 plus tip. If you’re planning a trip here the only thing getting a good gently caress is your wallet

And to agree with the poster above. The section on the strip north of Paris and south of Venetian is a loving dump at the moment. They really need to get the construction finished or at least disguise it from tourists so it doesn’t feel like walking through the rear end end of Loserville, ditto the stretch opposite Aria.

Yeah I was at the Aria in October and the prices were just obscene (Granted it's been 15 years since I was in Vegas last). I especially love the "You can't use the fridge in the room for your personal items either"
