KAT Comin'Johnny Athletic posted:The Wolves have sorely missed Karl-Anthony Towns ever since he went down Nov. 28 with a calf strain but never more than Tuesday. They needed another shot maker. And for the first time in a long time, there is a positive sign on that front. Finch said before the Sixers game that Towns is starting to do some basketball activities. In an interview on KFAN on Wednesday morning, he said Towns is starting to ramp things up. quote:It’s been that kind of season for the Wolves, a maddening level of waxing and waning that has been difficult for everyone involved to endure. There have been truly inspiring victories, like the one in Sacramento on Saturday night, one in Dallas last month and a rousing one against Memphis in January, the kinds of performances that lead the Wolves to believe they can compete with anyone when they step on the floor. quote:“The losses this year have hurt way more than in general, just because it feels like a lot of blown opportunities,” Finch said on Monday. “But, still have a lot of guys that are learning, learning how to close games, learning how to play in high-leverage situations every single night. We get exposed when we don’t do that.” And what may have been missed during the inspired "fire Finch and should blow the team up if only we could" posting- quote:And as bad as things have sometimes looked for the Wolves, they are 18-12 since Jan. 1. Only Denver and Sacramento have better records in the West. Up until the loss to the Sixers, they were 16-16 against teams with a .500 record or better, one of only six teams in the league not to have a losing record in such games. Also, the issueknower: quote:“At the end of the day, we can control a lot more than we think,” Gobert said. “It’s on us to keep our mind, keep our focus, keep our composure. Especially us as the leaders, the older guys, show the way. When we keep our head, all the guys are going to keep their heads.”

Maneck posted:He's right to point out that actually most NBA refs are pretty good. They're way better than they used to be. There used to be a ton of referees who seemed to think the fans were there to watch them, and they're mostly gone. Scott Foster is an aberration. And Fred's going to pay a huge fine for pointing out what seems to be acknowledged by everyone involved in the NBA, save officials and the league itself. I do agree that there are some refs that are worse than others and officiate overly tight, but I also believe that dealing with reffing is an aspect of the game that teams and individuals just need to basically deal with, at least within the context of an individual game itself. Plan for it, and manage it during the game. From Fred's comments, it sounds like the team is letting the reffing get to them and it's affecting their performance. Yes, I'm saying that Fred and the Raptors are mentally weak children and can't handle the whistles.

By most metrics KAT last year was better than ANT this year (same scoring but KAT was more efficient, better 3pt shooting, better rebounding, higher WS). They play very differently and there's an argument to be made there's a opportunity cost on a big vs someone like Ant realistically playing both wing and lead guard. Either way you lost a guy who had 10WS and made the All-NBA team you're going to have an impact.

I don’t judge anyone who gambles for fun, I look at odds sometimes, when I worked in Vegas for half a year I placed a bet just to be able to chill and watch a regular season game and get the “free” drink that came with it. But with the huuuuuuge mainstream-ization of sports betting just in the last year, we don’t know what effect in the numbers that will have on gambling addiction-related things. I’m worried!!

DraftKings is even sponsoring AEW PPVs now and allowing people to bet on scripted content seems just so unhealthily predatory even if technically nobody betting actually knows the outcome

nothing is more important in a capitalist society than unending growth and sports gambling is now providing that fuel for the league and without never ending growth we won't get exploding cap numbers and therefore fewer hilarious free agencies and therefore sports gambling is actually good for the sport

I used to play Poker cash games, and still will play the occasional live game when I get the chance, and I can confirm that a string of bad luck can do horrible things to your psyche if you're not steeled against it. Another trick statistics plays on you is making it seem like you can be "due", and then feel oppressed and unloved, by like, God, I guess, when it doesn't happen. Hell, even some of my bad luck swings on poo poo like Slice&Dice can have me question my place in the universe. It's why X-Com's RNG is notorious, even though, near as I can tell, it's one of the most fair and least oppressive RNGs that I am aware of.

kingcobweb posted:They run these ads like “lightning bets, bet NOW on the NEXT PLAY (if you have a problem with gambling please call…)” I for real think gambling is the most tragic addiction and the older I get the more I view the normalization of gambling with disgust. I enjoy a wager and some games literally don’t work without one like poker and some stakes can make things really exciting, but gambling addiction just seems like a physiological trait that you can’t control. Like you can just stop using heroin but the analysis that goes into using resources to gain more resources is something we use in our daily lives so you can’t just cut it out cold turkey unless you live in a monastery or something. I hope sports betting gets reigned in soon but lol yeah right.

Not to trivialize heroin addiction but it comes up less than gambling. Investing is the same type of analysis as gambling and to a certain degree so is selling your labor, I don’t see how you can separate the part of your brain that wants to shoot craps (gambling) to trying picking a stock portfolio (somehow not gambling)

I legitimately don't know how someone with a gambling problem watches TV anymore. At least Jalen Rose isn't telling you what beer to drink while the game is going on in a small corner of the screen, but he is sure telling you to bet on a jump shot. There has to be some societal middle-ground between betting being legal and it being integrated into 90% of live television.

# ? Mar 9, 2023 19:46 |

I assume that television is aware of its shrinking popularity, and it needs to feed this addiction in order to keep people incentivized into watching.

I don't get sports gambling for two reasons the first and less important is that I know that I don't know as much as the whales that move lines and if I'm putting money down I want a little more intuition. the second is the reason I started following sports is cause it's a really low stakes way to a) enjoy some drama and intense moments / feats of human performance and skill and b) feel like part of a community, whether that's an easy way to start a conversation or mild joshing with fans of opposing teams. if you put $ stakes on it the fun disappears.

There's a kind of obtuse system they use where the % shown isn't always the real %, but there's a simple mod that fixes it. It's usually not far off except in situations where you might literally ONLY be able to get a miss or crit. Regarding Kyrie: The second thing about gambling is pretty spot on and I imagine having people blast you on twitter because they lost their house and family because you didn't cover the spread must be awful even if you realistically know you had nothing to do with it. The first thing he posted is true but it's also "Freshman taking Philosophy 101 and thinking he's special" energy. Its not bad to post but the "I am the only one who knows whats going on, you're all sheep" tone gets super tiring.

Yeah, but I am close to certain that, much like Fire Emblem, the odds are actually stacked in your favor. So it still works with my point of "humans take bad luck much more personally than they should". I definitely do. It's why God invented Blood Bowl.

I know several goons working somewhat reluctantly for the gambling industry, and I think they would pretty much all agree. I don't have a problem with it being legal, but it's pretty gross how it dominates all sports media now. Everyone is trying to get a slice of the pie now that the US gambling market is opening up (via concerted lobbying efforts), so hopefully in a few years it's not pushed so relentlessly. Kind of like what happened with FanDuel and DraftKings daily fantasy stuff 7 or 8 years ago, although you could argue that that only slowed down because full-blown sportsbooks took over.
