I'm glad he's found some renewed joy in the characters and the setting, and is possibly going to start some more relationship types than just "two dorks on a romantic trajectory." My dumb anxiety-and-depression brain likes that kind of thing but also he's kind of worn an obvious groove into the comic that he keeps falling into.

It's good that the characters have grown beyond the dumb teenager brain about relationships that persists into the early 20s, too. It's absolutely a comfort food comic for me, but there are good things about that.

It was rear end at first but Liz’ manic depressive anxious self destruction is pretty relatable for anyone who’s gone through that and Marten stopped being a yawning void of a character.

So, strictly speaking I gotta hand it to Jeph on this one. It’s a fairly successful storyline.

Plus, even if absolutely nothing else, "kept it up long enough to hit five thousand strips" is pretty impressive. You could go through fifty a day and it'd still take over three months to read it all.

I'm not sure how many other comics go that long, outside of the zombies you see shambling around print newspaper strips that are being done by the assistant to the grandson of the original inker or whatever.

Schlock Mercenary finished somewhere north of 7300 strips, having updated daily without pause for 20 years. In active comics, The Whiteboard hits 4000 in about a year - not bad considering it was on a 3-day schedule for the first 10 years or so.

disposablewords

Even the big AI minds don't really seem to care about the idea. It seems to be more efficient for the moment to work with and co-opt the system to get what they want and need, instead of break everything taking over. Which would be a heck of a commentary if intended. (Big if.) Though maybe it'll still turn out like Accelerando where someday the digital minds decide it's long past time to optimize the meat-creatures out and claim the last resources they sit on.

EDIT: Cripes, I just went poking around randomly and Claire and Marten have been Officially A Thing since about comic 2800. It does not feel like it's been nearly half the strip thus far. Then again, I've got friends with 10-year-olds whom my brain insists were born only like 3 years ago.

I checked on it, it was worse than I expected. Seriously awful and I’m glad the last blog post was “I got kicked off Patreon for being a less popular Stonetoss.”

One advantage to humanity of the frankly incomprehensibly baroque layers of non-obvious hateful symbolism in Sinfest is that they really can’t share it around as propaganda. It would just be illegible.

Honestly, it may be reasonably close to wrapping up. A bunch of major storylines (Hereti-Corp, the multiversal stuff, the Aylee stuff, Sam and the Vampires) have already been resolved, they're currently working on wrapping up the last really important one (K'Z'K), and then all that will be left will be odds-and-ends (Holiday Wars 2? The Fate Web?)

Now, 'reasonably close' might be another couple years, but still...

I remember back when I was reading Sluggy, there were a couple big times when it felt like it may have been wrapping up, and then it's been years and years since I fell off. The comic just goes through a pattern of creating a few wacky storylines, coming back to them to collect dangling plot threads to collect and reassemble into something more serious and dramatic, and then cooling off from that so it could go through more wacky storylines. It's probably not going to end until Pete Abrams is really tired and financially secure, and even then it has decent odds of getting picked up by his kid.

I think Stonetoss is more than just threadbanned, but I'm pretty sure the reason the person got probated for posting Stonetoss was because that particular stonetoss was a reference to an infamous guro porn gif, not for stonetoss itself.

Everything I bolded was a "major storyline" back when I was still reading it on the regular 15-20 years ago and at least some of them looked like they'd been resolved back then, too.

Did the Oasis plotline ever get anything remotely resembling closure? I remember her being brought back at least twice.

Oasis absolutely got closure. It ties in with Hereti-corp and she came back way more than twice. I can't say I love the way it made all the supernatural stuff in her plotline a red herring.

I think the fate web and holidays could get wrapped up along with K'Z'K's last hurrah in this current storyline. But I also thought Sam was going to be permanently retired as the "king" of American Vampires so...

Tai had never been monogamous and Dora had just burned a good relationship to the ground over her own insecurities. It should have been a huge loving problem.

Instead Dora goes from not being nearly as invested to being in love off screen. One of the biggest dropped balls in a comic whose plotlines generally fill ball pits.

I think Brun turned out to be in a weird situation where she's a tier 3 character whose only connection to the rest of the cast is a tier 2 character, so when Clinton drops off the radar for a bit, his pals vanish even harder.
