What is a bird that has a red bod & gray wings?

E: tried to get a pic but it flew as soon as I moved, it's a little one like sparrow or a finch or something

What's your region? In most parts of the U.S. I'd think that's a male House Finch:

Maybe but this guy was pretty fuckin red, I'll keep an eye out to describe it better. Dunno the tail color

Def was like "aw yess, gonna bite this leaf -- oh poo poo a dude several yards away, fly away!"

I know its not this but I googled "bird red body grey wings" and the bird that came up with the reddest body and greyest wings was the Vermillion Flycatcher

Its a pretty cool bird.

House finches are cool and are my front porch friends.

Saw something wild today in my front yard-

About 3 or 4 mockingbirds or catbirds were hassling a big crow that was flying near a tree. They bombed and attacked the crow who then awkwardly landed on a branch. I was thinking "wrong move my man" then the crow plucked a baby bird from a nest and took off with it.

First time I've actually seen a crow do that.

I'd guess it was a scarlet tanager, they fit your "pretty fuckin red" with grey wing description

Saw these cute sons of bitches on my lunch break at a pier in lower Manhattan:
One on the right was just screaming at the one on the left's face, probably for the little fishy

The one on the right just hung out for a long time after the left one ate the fish and flew away

I have never seen these birds in my few years coming here for lunch.

What are they and why are they cute as hell

They are Common Terns.

It's probably a juvenile that hasn't quite learned how to hunt yet getting fed by its parents. Nature's equivalent of moving back home after university.

Sometimes I just can't tell if an adjective is describing the individual bird pictured, or is actually part of the species name.

interesting that dinosaurs didn't start getting into the water until they had feathers, it must be like seals / otters / fat rear end crocs
