Didn’t they all live in the same house at one point?

It’s like the crazy tech bro flop house (castle Voltaire?) that popularized NFTs and the explosion of alternate crypto coins. Just a bunch of fart smelling idiocy all the way down

Yeah that was the one I was thinking about… there were a lot of crazies in California at that time though and it would be interesting to see how they all fit together. Maybe a long video essay by a YouTuber! Get me Dan Olson, STAT!

e: I should pay the tech relic tax and say that I fired up my old CRT last night and hooked it up to a DVD player just to make sure it still worked. It’s a Mitsubishi XC3760 (37-inch Presentation Monitor) and I only had composite cables handy. It looked so bad I thought it might be broken at first, but I just think it’s interference and the fact that I was pretty close up to it. Could probably use a recap too.

Aha! I always wondered where this particular piece of hardware came from. That was the weirdest drat Packard Bell system I ever found, someone spent a lot of money and effort to upgrade it beyond all reason. One of these, a Rage 128, 64mb EDO ram, an AWE64, and an IDE controller card to get the 20gb drive working. I should have never broken it up for parts, alas.

I actually use that system, though, because my LASER printer will not work with any Windows newer than 98SE.

I hesitate to ask, but what can that old printer do that a newer one can't? Like...I assume there's a good reason you keep using that old printer and don't just buy a cheap Brother laser for, like, $80.

Or is it just good ol' goon stubbornness?

"It WORKS, dammit! I just have to export any file I write to Word 97 format, burn it to a CD*, boot up my Win 98 PC, wait ten minutes for it to finish booting, load up Word 97, put the CD in the the tray, open the file, hope the formatting didn't get hosed, and then I can print just FINE!"

*I guess Win98SE can support some USB drives if they're small enough and in FAT32 format?

Buying an 80-dollar printer that you know will need a 90-dollar toner cartridge real soon seems like a dumb idea when you already have a printer with a cartridge that has been going for twenty years already.

Also the new printer 100% won't work with your next Windows, either.

Yeah, you need to install a modern universal USB driver to not need brand-specific drivers, but once you do that you can plug in a 32GB FAT32 drive and it works more or less as smoothly as on a modern system. Beats me about the draw of a printer that old though.

Also Win98 era systems don't take horribly long to boot in recent experience, at least if they're not starved for RAM or packed with startup programs. If you're running one today I imagine it's probably got plenty of RAM for the era and maybe flash storage. Incredibly long boot times seemed to be a bigger issue in the Windows Vista era since vendors were selling Vista machines with bare minimum 512MB-1GB configurations and lots of bloatware, and the sheer amount of files that had to be pulled from a spinning disk was far larger by then.

That "the bundled cartridge is tiny" scam seems more prevalent in inkjets? Brother lasers have been very decent about it in my experience, I've been using the original toner for years. I may print less than you, though.

Also, it's wild what is supported by CUPS these days. Can I ask which printer you are using?

Yeah Windows 98(SE) is a mature system, now. You still can't leave it on for long times without it making GBS threads itself but you can't have everything.

USB works fine (not that I even have a USB drive that big) but also you can just grab files off the network.

Modern printers have ditched the "cheap printer / expensive ink" thing and are doing the "expensive printer / cheap ink" thing now. We picked up one recently, an Epson 8550, and it's great having big bottles for each ink color and a reservoir to squeeze them into instead of expensive cartridges that last a short period of time. We also splurged and got the 6 color model, so we have two shades of black and a grey ink.

Well I slightly was wrong, seems the budget Brother is a shockingly high...$120:
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/brother-hl-l2320d-black-and-white-laser-printer-gray/4499400.p?skuId=4499400

It takes TN-630 cartridges that are the absurd price of...$40:
https://www.amazon.com/Brother-Cartridge-TN630-Replacement-Replenishment/dp/B00LGCUPQU
Or the high-yield TN-660 for $60:
https://www.brother-usa.com/products/tn660
I don't know how many more pages it gives, on average, but it it's more than 1.5 the amount of pages, it's a better deal.

For the record, I have a Brother B+W Laser I bought back in 2014, a slightly better version of that one (mine can scan and has wifi) and I bought one toner cartridge with it. I used the "starter" cartridge for a couple years, then switched to the other one, and have been using that since. But I'll admit I don't print a lot, maybe a few pages a week?

My sister and her husband get a new printer every two years because they need (well, needed) one for a certain hobby of theirs. Then they curse the things when they stop working either due to planned mechanical failure, or them buying a new computer with a new OS due to either one pouring a drink down the keyboard. (They always buy laptops despite never taking them off the desk.)

Yup, some madman has reverse engineered the protocol it uses and written a CUPS driver for it, which only works with the parallel port version. Which means you could theoretically set up a linux print server for it that accepts jobs in a more sane format, and print to it from a modern machine.

I can see perfectly good reasons to not bother, of course.
